The site is currently developed with a convenience store. A release was identified, and an Initial Abatement Action Report was completed by Pilot dated November 6, 2020. Pilot was requested to provide Limited Site Assessment (LSA) services based on impacted soil remaining above the Soil-to-Groundwater Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs) and per the requirements of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). Pilot completed a LSA dated January 8, 2021. Based on the findings of the LSA, the NCDEQ issued a NORR dated February 10, 2021, requiring that an Additional Risk Assessment Report (ARA) be completed. Pilot completed an ARA dated August 17, 2021. The field activities completed on June 15 and 24, 2021 consisted of installing monitoring wells and collecting soil samples using a Geoprobe® drill rig and direct push techniques for soil sample collection and solid stem augers for the monitoring well installations. Laboratory analysis of soil samples MW2-15, MW3-15 and MW4-15 did not detect gasoline range Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) above the North Carolina Action Level. Laboratory analysis of soil samples MW2-25, MW3-25, MW4-20, DW1-20 and DW1-25 detected gasoline range TPH above the North Carolina Action Level. Laboratory analysis of groundwater samples MW-2 through MW-4 and DW-1 detected several targeted compounds above their respective 2L Standards, but below their respective GCLs. The groundwater flow was calculated to be generally to the west. Water supply wells were not identified within 1,000 feet of the source area of the release. Based on the ARA, the NCDEQ issued a NORR dated October 27, 2021, requiring that a Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) be completed. Pilot completed a CSA dated June 6, 2022. Laboratory analysis of groundwater sample MW-6 did not detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limits. Laboratory analysis of groundwater samples MW-1 through MW-5, MW-7 and DW-1 detected targeted compounds above their respective 2L Standards. Benzene and EDB were detected above their respective GCLs in groundwater sample MW-1. The detected concentrations generally decreased from the previous sampling events. Based on the CSA, the NCDEQ issued a NORR dated September 23, 2022 requiring that groundwater monitoring be completed. Project information is based on correspondence between NCDEQ personnel, Midway Oil and Gas Company, Inc. and Pilot and the previously completed activities. 1.1 UST Information A suspected release was identified during the removal of one 2,000-gallon and two 1,000-gallon gasoline USTs on October 12, 2020. Laboratory analysis of soil samples confirmed the release as Groundwater Monitoring Report Six to One Pilot Project G-6038.5 November 17, 2022 2 well as on-site analysis by Red Lab, LLC (Red Lab) on October 13, 2020. Based on field observations indicating a release beneath the USTs and dispensers, approximately 242.12 tons of petroleum impacted soil was excavated and transported to AES of NC (AES) in Thomasville, North Carolina and Earthtec of NC in Bear Creek, North Carolina for disposal. UST information is summarized in Table 1. 2.0 SITE GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Topographic Map, Mebane and Burlington, North Carolina Quadrangles depict the site as an urban area. The site elevation is approximately 640 feet above mean sea level. An unnamed tributary to Bowden Branch is depicted approximately 1,650 feet west-southwest of the site. Based on the review of the USGS topographic map and observations of the general area and site topography, surface run-off would be expected to flow generally to the west-southwest across the site. The subject site is located within the Piedmont Physiographic Province. The Piedmont Physiographic Province generally consists of hills and ridges which are dissected by a system of swales and stream. The Piedmont Physiographic Province is predominantly underlain by metamorphic rock (formed by heat, pressure and/or chemical action) and igneous rock (formed directly from molten material). The topography and relief of the Piedmont Province has developed from differential weathering of the igneous and metamorphic rock. Ridges and hills have been developed in areas of less weathered rock. Because of the continued chemical and physical weathering, rock in the Piedmont Physiographic Province is generally covered with a mantle of soil that has weathered in place from the parent bedrock. These soils vary in thickness and are referred to as residuum or residual soils. The residuum is typically finer grained and has higher clay content near the surface because of the advanced weathering. Similarly, the soils typically become coarser grained with increasing depth because of decreased weathering. As the weathering decreases, the residual soils generally retain the overall appearance, texture and foliations of the parent rock. In general, groundwater movement in the Piedmont Physiographic Province is from higher to lower elevations. As such, the presumed direction of groundwater flow is generally to the west- southwest across the site. Based on the presumed groundwater flow direction, areas to the north and east are potentially up-gradient of the site. Soils at the site consist of sandy clay or silty clay from the ground surface to approximately 15 feet bgs and silty clay from approximately 15 feet bgs to 61 feet bgs. 3.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES The field activities were completed by Pilot on November 2, 2022. The field activities consisted of collecting groundwater samples from existing monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6, MW-7 and DW-1 (Drawing 2). Groundwater Monitoring Report Six to One Pilot Project G-6038.5 November 17, 2022 3 3.1 Monitoring Well Sampling Groundwater samples were collected from the existing monitoring wells that did not contain free product, using a disposable bailer and new length of nylon string or peristaltic pump and new length of polyethylene tubing. Prior to sampling, approximately three well volumes were purged from the monitoring wells. The monitoring wells were purged to remove silt and sediment from the groundwater and collect a representative sample of groundwater. After the purging was completed, groundwater samples were collected in the sample containers provided by the laboratory. Pilot personnel wore a new pair of disposable nitrile gloves during purging and sampling. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately 4 Celsius. The samples were then transported to Pace Analytical (Pace) for chemical analysis. The groundwater samples collected were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using Standard Method 6200B. A chain of custody was maintained and is included in Appendix C. Isoconcentration maps for the compounds that exceed their respective 2L Standard are included as Drawings 5 through 18, respectively. Copies of the Monitoring Well Sampling Sheets are included in Appendix B. The depth to the groundwater surface in monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-7 and DW-1 was measured using a decontaminated water level indicator. The top of casing elevation for each well was previously surveyed relative to an arbitrary benchmark (MW-1) with an assumed elevation of 100.00 feet above mean sea level. The monitoring well elevations were utilized to prepare a potentiometric surface map (Drawing 4). The relative groundwater elevations collected from each monitoring well on November 2, 2022 are provided in Table 3. Based on data collected during the assessment activities, the groundwater flow direction appears to be generally toward the west-northwest beneath the site. 3.2 Water Supply Wells Water supply wells were not identified within 1,000 feet of the source area based on the previously completed receptor survey. Receptor information is included in Table 4. 3.3 Groundwater Modeling Groundwater modeling was not completed based on a surface water featuring not being identified within 500 feet of the source area of the release. 3.4 Free Product Investigation and Recovery Free product was not observed during the sampling activities. 3.5 Land Use Currently the site is developed with a convenience store. The property is zoned as General Business. Groundwater Monitoring Report Six to One Pilot Project G-6038.5 November 17, 2022 4 3.6 Property Owners and Occupants The names and addresses of the property owners of the site and adjacent properties are included in Table 2. 4.0 LABORATORY ANALYTICAL RESULTS 4.1 Groundwater Sample Analysis Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring well MW-6 did not detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limits. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW- 7 and DW-1 detected several targeted compounds above their respective 2L Standards. The concentration of benzene exceeds its GCL in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1. A summary of the groundwater analytical results is presented in Table 5. The laboratory data sheets are included in the Appendix C. Groundwater Elevation versus Concentration versus Time Graphs for monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3 and DW-1 are included in Appendix A. Pilot completed a mass contaminant calculation for the site (see table below), utilizing the groundwater data. The groundwater contaminant mass is calculated by multiplying the mean groundwater concentration by the source area calculation (surface area) by the depth of the groundwater contamination zone by the porosity. The benzene concentrations were utilized for the groundwater mass contaminant concentration. Based on the calculation, the total groundwater contaminant mass is 23.50 Kg, a 22.34% increase in contaminant mass since June 3, 2022. 5.0 CONCLUSIONS Based on the activities, Pilot concludes the following:  Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring well MW-6 did not detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limits. Laboratory analysis of the Groundwater Monitoring Report Six to One Pilot Project G-6038.5 November 17, 2022 5 groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-7 and DW-1 detected several targeted compounds above their respective 2L Standards. The concentration of benzene exceeds its GCL in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1. The overall concentrations in the groundwater are exhibiting a decreasing trend from the previous monitoring events. The fluctuations in the detected concentrations are likely attributable to fluctuations in the groundwater table. The increase in the contaminant mass is likely attributable to the migration of dissolved phase compounds.  The groundwater flow was calculated to be to be generally to the west-northwest.  Based on the findings and the intermediate ranking of the site, Pilot considers this release to be a candidate for monitored natural attenuation. Based on the source and accessible secondary source being removed, it is anticipated that the dissolved phase concentrations will decrease over time. An Aggressive Fluid Vapor Recovery Event (AFVR) could be completed to expedite the reduction of the dissolved phase concentrations, if deemed necessary. 6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS Pilot recommends that the current property owner/responsible party submit a copy of this Groundwater Monitoring Report to the NCDEQ, UST Section for their review. A Notice of Residual Petroleum (NORP) is required to be recorded prior to a property transaction occurring. 7.0 QUALIFICATIONS OF REPORT The activities and evaluative approaches used in this assessment are consistent with those normally employed in assessment projects of this type. Our evaluation of site conditions has been based on our understanding of the site project information and the data obtained during our field activities. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited.
