Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: June 4, 2020 Trindale Mini Mart Project Manager: Corey N. Buchanan, P.G. GRI Project No. 4236 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Trindale Mini Mart is located at 7619 NC Highway 62 in Trinity, Randolph County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by Joan Angel and is operated by Angel, LLC as a petroleum retail facility. Soil samples collected during the initial abatement activities, during the removal of a 3,000-gallon kerosene UST in August 2016, contained contaminant concentrations that exceeding the soil-to-water maximum contaminant concentrations (MCCs). One 3,000-gallon kerosene, one 3,000-gallon gasoline, and one 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were closed on April 27, 1990. One 7,000-gallon fuel oil UST was closed on July 31, 1990. One 3,000-gallon kerosene UST was closed on August 1, 2016. Three 8,000-gallon gasoline and associated pumps and product piping are active at the site. The adjoining properties are a mixture residential and commercial properties. According to the information determined during receptor survey activities, seven non-potable water supply wells were identified within 1,000 feet of the site. Public water is available to the site and surrounding properties within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. One Type II monitoring well (MW-1) was installed during the limited site assessment. A free product thickness of 0.10 feet was measured in well MW-1 on April 16, 2017. Well MW-1 was again gauged on September 5, 2020 and measured 5.91 feet of free product. Two 8-hour AFVR events have been conducted on MW-1 to recover free product. On April 22, 2020, four additional Type II monitoring wells (MW-2 through MW-5) were installed around the UST basin, to delineate free product. Wells MW-2 through MW-5 were installed to a total depth of 35 feet with a screened interval of 20 feet. On April 22, 2020, five Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-5) were gauged, purged and/or sampled. Free product was observed in monitoring well MW-1 and MW-3 with a free product thickness of 0.64 feet and 0.03 feet, respectively; therefore, these wells were not sampled. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 22.04 feet to 23.99 feet relative to an arbitrary datum of 100 feet. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 75.75 feet to 77.02 feet. Ground water flow was generally to the northeast with a horizontal gradient of approximately 0.02 feet per foot. The MACs were below the concentrations of benzene, MTBE, TAA, p-isopropyltoluene, n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, methyl chloride, methylene chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, C5-C8 aliphatics, C9-C22 aliphatics, C9-C10 aromatics, C9-C18 aliphatics, and/or C11-C22 aromatics reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-4 and MW-5. Free product was found in MW-1 and MW-3. None of the contaminant concentrations were above the GCLs. Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain intermediate risk. Past AFVR events have been successful in reducing free product levels in MW-1; therefore, GRI recommends continuing free product recovery using AFVR events. The ground water contaminant plume has not been delineated at the site and GRI recommends installing additional monitoring wells to further delineate the contaminant plume. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. The contaminant plume was divided into two areas (Areas 1 and 2) based on the extent of free product and benzene concentrations during the April 2020 ground water sampling event. Please note that the contaminant mass cannot be calculated in wells containing free product. Once free product is removed from the site, changes in contaminant mass can be calculated from future ground water sampling events. Contaminant mass calculations have been included as Appendix D. A map of the contaminant mass areas has been included as Figure 6. 4.0 FREE PRODUCT REMOVAL Free product has historically been present in monitoring well MW-1. An AFVR event was conducted on November 22, 2017, and a subsequent AFVR event was again conducted in February 14, 2019 to recover free product from MW-1. During the sampling event in April 2020, free product was found in MW-1 and MW-3 at a thickness of 0.64 and 0.10 feet, respectively. Free product recovery should continue at the site until free product is no longer present. 5.0 NATURAL ATTENUATION / NATURAL SOURCE ZONE DEPLETION STATUS Free product recovery is being conducted at the site using AFVR events. Due to the site being in the active free product recovery phase, no natural attenuation monitoring plan is currently in place at the site. 6.0 CONCLUSIONS  On April 22, 2020, four additional Type II monitoring wells (MW-2 through MW-5) were installed around the UST basin to delineate free product. Wells MW-2 through MW-4 were installed to total depths of 35 feet with screened intervals of 20 feet.  On April 22, 2020, five Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-5) were gauged, purged and/or sampled. Free product was observed in monitoring well MW-1 and MW-3 with a free product thickness of 0.64 feet and 0.03 feet, respectively; therefore, these wells were not ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc.  The MACs were below the concentrations of benzene, MTBE, TAA, p-isopropyltoluene, n- propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, methyl chloride, methylene chloride, 1,2- dichloroethane, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, C5-C8 aliphatics, C9-C22 aliphatics, C9-C10 aromatics, C9-C18 aliphatics, and/or C11-C22 aromatics reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-4 and MW-5. Free product was found in MW-1 and MW-3. None of the reported contaminant concentrations were above the GCLs.  Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain intermediate risk. 7.0 LIMITATIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Angels, Inc. and the NCDEQ for specific application to the referenced site in Randolph County, North Carolina.
