(EnviroTrac), on behalf of Sunoco, Inc. (Sunoco), is pleased to present this report documenting monitoring activities performed at the Former Sunoco Bulk Terminal facility, located at 6900 West Market Street in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. In April 2010 Sunoco awarded an environmental services contract to EnviroTrac for continuing environmental services at this site. A USGS Topographic map is presented in Figure 1. This report presents the results of the semi-annual groundwater sampling activities conducted on June 12, 2014 and November 24, 2014. The approximate locations of the site groundwater monitoring wells are indicated in Figure 2. 1.1 Background According to NCDENR, petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the subsurface at the Astroline and Sunoco properties in 1986. At the time of the release, Sunoco owned the bulk storage terminal facility. Between 1986 and 1990, a groundwater quality investigation was performed at the site. In 1990, an Environmental Audit Agreement Report was submitted by ATEC Associates, Inc. (ATEC) to evaluate the site property. A Comprehensive Site Assessment was submitted by Matrix Environmental Technologies (Matrix) in April 1994. On May 16, 1994, Matrix submitted a CAP proposing a remediation system to address the absorbed phase and dissolved phase petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants at the subject site. On February 15, 1996, IT Corporation of North Carolina, Inc. (IT) submitted a CAP Addendum proposing the installation of a dual phase vapor extraction system (DPVE), in response to NCDENR correspondence dated November 13, 1995. The DPVE system was installed from September to November 1996. The soil vapor extraction system was activated on January 10, 1997. The groundwater recovery and treatment system was activated on July 10, 1997, after the issuance of an NPDES permit. The system has remained off since August 1999 and a monitored natural attenuation program was implemented. An Annual Monitoring Report was submitted by IT on March 28, 2001. Sunoco has submitted Annual Monitoring Reports to NCDENR for each year since 2002. Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report November 2014 Former Sunoco Bulk Terminal, Market Street, Greensboro, NC 2 2.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING ACTIVITIES Groundwater monitoring activities were conducted on June 12, 2014 and November 24, 2014. Static groundwater levels were obtained from monitoring wells AW-1, AW-3, AW-4, AW-5, AW- 6, VEW-2, and VEW-4 prior to sample collection using an electronic oil/water interface probe to gauge water levels and measure the thickness of free product, if encountered, in site monitoring wells. A summary of well construction data is presented in Table 1. 2.1 Groundwater Elevation Monitoring Activities Liquid level readings were collected during the June 2014 and November 2014 sampling events using an electronic oil/water interface probe. The current and selected historical results of the gauging events are presented in Table 2. Free product was not detected during either sampling event. Groundwater elevation data obtained from the June 2014 sampling event and November 2014 sampling event was used to create groundwater elevation maps identified in Figure 3A and Figure 3B, respectively. The inferred shallow groundwater flow direction across the site is generally to the north. 2.2 Groundwater Sampling Activities June 2014 Groundwater samples were collected on June 12, 2014, from monitoring wells AW-1, AW-3, AW-4, AW-5, AW-6, VEW-2, and VEW-4. Prior to sample collection, a minimum of three well casing volumes were purged from each well using a polyethylene disposable bailer. A groundwater sample was decanted from the bailer into laboratory supplied containers and placed on ice in a sample cooler. Groundwater samples from the June 2014 sampling event were shipped via overnight courier to Accutest Laboratories in Scott, Louisiana for laboratory analysis by EPA Method 624 including MTBE, IPE, and EDB. A summary of the laboratory analytical results for the June 2014 sampling event is presented in Table 3 and historical groundwater results are included in Table 4. A map showing the chemicals of concern in groundwater from the June 2014 sampling event is included in Figure 4A. Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report November 2014 Former Sunoco Bulk Terminal, Market Street, Greensboro, NC 3 November 2014 Groundwater samples were collected on November 24, 2014, from monitoring wells AW-1, AW- 3, AW-4, AW-5, AW-6, VEW-2, and VEW-4. Prior to sample collection, a minimum of three well casing volumes were purged from each well using a polyethylene disposable bailer. A groundwater sample was decanted from the bailer into laboratory supplied containers and placed on ice in a sample cooler. Groundwater samples from the November 2014 sampling event were shipped via overnight courier to Accutest in Scott, Louisiana for laboratory analysis by EPA Method 624 including MTBE, IPE, and EDB. A summary of the laboratory analytical results for the November 2014 sampling event is presented in Table 3 and historical groundwater results are included in Table 4. A map showing the chemicals of concern in groundwater from the November 2014 sampling event is included in Figure 4B. Copies of the laboratory analytical reports for the June 12, 2014, and November 24, 2014 sampling events are included in Appendix A. In June 2014 benzene and naphthalene were detected above the NCDENR Groundwater Quality 2L Standard (2L Standard) in monitoring well AW-4. MTBE was detected above the 2L Standard in monitoring well VEW-2. In November 2014, benzene was detected above the 2L Standard in monitoring well AW-4, AW-5, and VEW-2. Naphthalene was detected above the 2L Standard in monitoring wells AW-4 and VEW-2, and MTBE was detected above the 2L Standard in monitoring well VEW-2. 3.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 Conclusions Based on information collected during the June 2014 and November 2014 sampling events, the following conclusions were made: • Free product was not detected during the June 2014 and November 2014 sampling events • Benzene was detected above the 2L Standard in monitoring well AW-4 in June 2014 • MTBE was detected above the 2L Standard in monitoring well VEW-2 in June 2014 • Naphthalene was detected above the 2L Standard in AW-4 in June 2014 • Benzene was detected above the 2L Standard in well AW-4, AW-5, and VEW-2 in November 2014 • MTBE was detected above the 2L Standard in well VEW-2 in November 2014 Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report November 2014 Former Sunoco Bulk Terminal, Market Street, Greensboro, NC 4 • Naphthalene was detected above the 2L Standard in wells AW-4 and VEW-2 in November 2014 3.2 Recommendations Based on the above results, semi-annual groundwater sampling events will continue in May and November 2015 and an annual remediation monitoring report including the results from both events will be submitted to NCDENR by January 31, 2016, as identified in the Corrective Action Plan. APPENDIX A LABORATORY ANALYTICAL REPORTS Case Narrative for: L0044181 Certificate of Analysis Number: SUNOCO, INC ACCUTEST GULF COAST 500 AMBASSADOR CAFFERY PARKWAY SCOTT, LA 70583 (337) 237-4775 ENVIROTRAC 13109 OVERLOOK PASS ROSWELL GA 30075- JOHN COYNE Date Reported:6/24/2014 Project Name:GREENSBORO, NC PO Number: Site:SUNOCO DUNS #0000-0107 GREENSB State:North Carolina State Cert. No.:487 Report To: Site Address:6900 WEST MARKET ST NCGREENSBORO (770) 777-1711 (770) 777-1766ph:fax: Matrix spike (MS) and matrix spike duplicate (MSD) samples are chosen and tested at random from an analytical batch of "like" matrix to check for possible matrix effect. The MS and MSD will provide site specific matrix data for those samples spiked by the laboratory and may be applicable to other samples of similar matrix from the site. Since the MS and MSD are chosen at random from an analytical batch, the sample chosen for spike purposes may or may not have been a sample submitted in this sample delivery group. The validity of the analytical procedures for which data is reported in this analytical report is determined by the Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and the Method Blank (MB). The Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and the Method Blank (MB) are processed with the samples and the MS/MSD to ensure method criteria are achieved throughout the entire analytical process. If insufficient sample is supplied for MS/MSD, a Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) and a Laboratory Control Sample Duplicate (LCSD) are reported with the analytical batch and serve as the batch quality control (QC). Results are reported on a Wet Weight Basis unless otherwise noted in the sample unit field as -dry. The collection of samples using encores, terracores or other field collection devices may result in inconsistent initial sample weights for the parent sample and MS/MSD samples. The MS/MSD recovery and precision data are calculated based on detected spike concentrations that are adjusted for initial sample weights. As a result of the variability between initial sample weights, the calculated RPD may have increased bias. Any other exceptions associated with this report will be footnoted in the analytical result page(s) or the quality control summary page(s). Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments pertaining to this data report. Please reference the above Certificate of Analysis Number. This report shall not be reproduced except in full, without the written approval of the laboratory. The reported results are only representative of the samples submitted for testing.
