Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: February 3, 2023 Reedy Creek Food Mart Project Manager: W. Scott Ball, Q.E.P. GRI Project No. 6328 i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Reedy Creek Food Mart is located at 3778 North Carolina Highway 150 in Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by Hanif Malik Et. Als. and is operated by M. Malik, Inc. as a petroleum retail facility and convenience store. Soil sampling results after tank removal activities in 2004 confirmed a release at the site. Currently, one 10,000-gallon gasoline, two 4,000-gallon gasoline and one 2,000-gallon kerosene USTs are active at the site. The adjoining properties are a mixture of rural agricultural, and commercial properties. According to the information determined during receptor survey activities, six water supply wells were identified within 1,500 feet of the site. There is one well within 1,000 feet of the site, however, it is inactive, and the property is connected to municipal water. Public water is available to the site and some surrounding properties within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. On January 11, 2023, three monitoring wells and one telescoping well were gauged, purged and/or sampled. Monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-7 could not be located, MW-2 is presumed to have been covered in asphalt, and MW-5 is presumed destroyed. Free product was not observed at the site. The concentrations of BTEX constituents, MTBE, naphthalene, acetone, tert-amyl alcohol (TAA), 2-butanone, tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB), 1,2-dicholorethane (1,2-DCA), ethanol, 2-hexanone, isopropylbenzene, di-isopropyl ether, methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4- trimethylbenzne, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, lead, C5-C12 aliphatics and/or C9-C10 aromatics reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-1, MW-3, MW-6, and/or VMW-1 exceeded the MACs. The concentrations of benzene, TAA, EDB, and 1,2-DCA in MW-1 exceeded the GCLs. Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should be lowered to intermediate risk. An attempt should be made to locate and confirm the status of monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, MW-5 and MW-7. If these wells are not found, they should be replaced with new wells in order to assess contamination more accurately at the site. Regular ground water monitoring should be continued at the site. A MMPE event should be conducted at monitoring well MW-1 in order to reduce the concentrations of dissolved phase contaminants reported in that well. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: February 3, 2023 Reedy Creek Food Mart Project Manager: W. Scott Ball, Q.E.P. GRI Project No. 6328 1 1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION GRI presents the results of the January 2023 ground water sampling event at the Reedy Creek Food Mart site; located at 3778 North Carolina Highway 150 in Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina. A topographic map showing the general site location and the surrounding area is included as Figure 1. These activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal No. 22-897, which was submitted to the NCDEQ and was approved as Task Authorization No. 30505-4 on December 16, 2022. State correspondence is included as Appendix A. The site is currently owned by Hanif Malik Et. Als. and is operated by M. Malik, Inc. as a petroleum retail facility and convenience store. Concentrations of TPH-GRO and TPH-DRO taken from beneath the dispensers and product piping during tank closure in 2004 indicated a release at the site. Currently, one 10,000-gallon gasoline, two 4,000-gallon gasoline, and one 2,000-gallon kerosene USTs are active at the site. UST owner/operator information and UST system information are included as Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The Registered Tank Report is shown below: ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: February 3, 2023 Reedy Creek Food Mart Project Manager: W. Scott Ball, Q.E.P. GRI Project No. 6328 2 The site and surrounding area is a mixture of rural agricultural, and commercial properties. The site contains one building (the store and restaurant) and is primarily capped with concrete and asphalt. The overall topography at the site is relatively flat. No surface water bodies were identified within a 500-foot radius of the site. Seven Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-7) and one Type III monitoring well (VMW-1) were installed at the site during previous ground water assessment activities. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells and the structures on-site is included as Figure 2. On January 11, 2023, GRI personnel conducted a receptor survey at the site. Six water supply wells were identified within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. One Water Supply Well was identified within 1,000 feet of the site, however the property is connected to municipal water and the well is inactive. Three potable and two inactive water supply wells were identified between 1,000 and 1,500 feet from the site. Municipal water is available to the site and some surrounding properties. Adjacent property owner information is presented in Table 3. A Site Vicinity Map showing the adjacent properties has been included as Figure 3. The information gathered during the updated receptor survey is included as Table 4. Land use information has been summarized in Appendix B. S&ME, Inc. submitted a CAP on July 24, 2015, that proposed to reduce contaminant concentrations to at or below GCLs at site by limited excavation of contaminated soils, as well as the installation of a vapor extraction and air sparging remediation system at the site. Based on available information, the CAP was not implemented. 2.0 PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/ COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION On January 11, 2023, three Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-3, and MW-6) and one telescoping well (VMW-1) were gauged, purged and/or sampled in accordance with the NCDEQ guidelines. Monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-7 could not be located, MW-2 is presumed to have been covered in asphalt, and MW-5 is presumed destroyed. Free product was not observed at the site. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 32.31 feet to 32.98 feet. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 67.02 feet to 68.32 feet. Ground water flow was divergent around MW-1 flowing northeast and southwest with horizontal gradients of approximately 0.01 feet per foot northeast, and approximately 0.001 feet per foot southwest. The vertical gradient between paired wells MW-1 and VMW-1 was approximately 0.005 feet per foot in the downward direction. Well construction and gauging information is presented in Table 5. A Water Table Surface Map based on the January 11, 2023 gauging data of the Type II monitoring wells is included as Figure 4. A summary of the current ground water gauging data is shown below: Well ID Screened Interval (x to y ft. BGS) Bottom of Well (ft. BGS) Top of Casing Elevation (ft.) The assessment was conducted based on the scope of work and level of effort desired by the NCDEQ and with resources adequate only for that scope of work. Our findings have been developed in accordance with generally accepted standards of environmental practices in the State of North Carolina, available information, and our professional judgment. No other warranty is expressed or implied. The data that are presented in this report are indicative of conditions that existed at the precise locations sampled and at the time the samples were collected. In addition, the data obtained from samples would be interpreted as being meaningful with respect to parameters indicated in the laboratory report. No additional information can logically be inferred from these data. 7.0 STATEMENTS AND CERTIFICATION 1 Enter the date the monitoring report was due. n/a Will this report be submitted after the established due date?
