EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The former Sunrise BP site is located at 2005 East Ash Street in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North
Carolina. The adjoining properties are commercial and residential. No potable water supply wells were
identified within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. Municipal water is available to the site and surrounding
properties. The site has a risk classification because free product is present in monitoring wells MW-1
and MW-8A.
In August 2017, the sorbent socks were removed from monitoring wells. On February 6, 2018, four
monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2A, MW-8A, and MW-9) were gauged, purged and/or sampled.
Concentrations of requested method constituents that exceeded the Maximum Allowable Concentrations
specified in T15A NCAC 2L.0202 were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-1,
MW-2A, MW-8A, and MW-9. None of the reported contaminant concentrations exceeded the Gross
Contamination Levels. Therefore, no further assessment should be required.

1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
The Former Sunrise BP site is located at 2005 East Ash Street in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North
Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). According to available information, four 3,000-gallon and one 6,000-gallon
gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed from the site in May 1993. A total of eighteen
Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2A, MW-3A, MW-4 through MW-7, MW-8A, and MW-9
through MW-18) and two Type III monitoring wells (TW-1 and TW-2) were installed at the site during
past ground water assessment activities. According to the historical information, monitoring wells MW-
6, MW-7, and TW-1 have been destroyed. Previous assessment and remediation activities were
conducted by other consultants. Geological Resources, Inc. (GRI) cannot verify the accuracy of
information obtained from previous reports, but for the purposes of this report, it is assumed to be correct.
Please refer to previous submittals for further historical information regarding the site.
2.0 CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT
This report presents the results of ground water sampling activities conducted on February 6, 2018 at the
Former Sunrise BP site in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). The activities
were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal Number 17-627 which was submitted to the North
Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) on January 11, 2018, and approved as Task
Authorization Number 10679-29 on January 18, 2018. The purpose of the scope of work was to obtain
current ground water quality data for the site since removing sorbent socks in August 2017.
3.0 GROUND WATER QUALITY
Four Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2A, MW-8A, and MW-9) were gauged on February 6, 2018.
The depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells gauged during the February 2018 sampling
event ranged from 6.07 to 6.63 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations in the Type
II monitoring wells relative to a temporary benchmark with an assumed datum of 100.00 feet ranged from
93.93 to 94.81 feet. A Site Map showing the location of the monitoring wells has been included as
Figure 3. A Water Table Surface Map has been included as Figure 4. A summary of well construction
information and ground water elevation data is presented in Table 1.
Laboratory analyses were performed on the ground water samples for volatile organic compounds using
EPA Method 602. Concentrations of BTEX constituents, MTBE, and/or naphthalene that exceeded the
maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) specified in T15A NCAC 2L.0202 (2L) were reported in the
2
ground water samples collected from MW-1, MW-2A, MW-8A, and MW-9. None of the reported
concentrations exceeded the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs). A Ground Water Quality Map based
on data from the February 2018 sampling event has been included as Figure 5. A summary of ground
water sample analytical results is presented in Table 2. A copy of the complete laboratory analytical
report has been included as Appendix A.
4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In August 2017, sorbent socks were removed from monitoring wells.
In February 2018, monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2A, MW-8A, and MW-9 were gauged and
sampled. The average depth to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells in February 2018
was 6.25 feet.
Concentrations of BTEX constituents, MTBE, and/or naphthalene that exceeded the MACs were
reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-1, MW-2A, MW-8A, and MW-9.
None of the reported concentrations exceeded the GCLs. Therefore, no further assessment should
be required.
5.0 LIMITATIONS
This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Castleberry’s, Inc. for specific application to the
referenced site in Wayne County, North Carolina. The assessment was conducted based on the scope of
work and level of effort desired by the NCDEQ and with resources adequate only for that scope of work.
Our findings have been developed in accordance with generally accepted standards of environmental
practices in the State of North Carolina, available information, and our professional judgment. No other
warranty is expressed or implied.
The data that are presented in this report are indicative of conditions that existed at the precise locations
sampled and at the time the samples were collected. In addition, the data obtained from samples would be
interpreted as being meaningful with respect to parameters indicated in the laboratory report. No
additional information can logically be inferred from these data. Please note that field data collected prior
to the November 2009 receptor survey update, free product evaluation, and ground water sampling events
were not obtained under the supervision of GRI. Although the accuracy of this information cannot be
verified, for the purpose of this report GRI assumes that it is correct.
