According to available information, a petroleum release at the site was confirmed subsequent to the removal of one 1,000-gallon and one 550-gallon gasoline USTs in September 1992. The site risk classification is currently ranked as high risk due to forty-seven potable water supply wells being located within a 1,000-foot radius of the site. On January 11, 2016, seven Type II monitoring wells were gauged, purged and sampled. Free product was not observed in any of these wells during the January 2016 sampling event. Concentrations of requested method constituents that exceeded the Maximum Allowable Concentrations (MACs) were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-2R, MW-11 and MW-14. None of the reported contaminant concentrations exceeded the Gross Contamination Levels. Based on this information, a fate and transport model should be developed to determine if the contaminant plume poses a significant risk the nearest down-gradient receptor. An updated receptor survey should be completed during the next sampling event which is tentatively scheduled for July 2016. According to available information, one 1,000-gallon and one 550- gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed from the site on September 23, 1992. Eighteen Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-2R, MW-3 through MW-4 and MW-6 through MW-18) and one Type III monitoring well (MW-5) were installed at the site during previous ground water assessment and corrective action activities. Previous activities were conducted by past consultants. Although Geological Resources, Inc. (GRI) cannot verify the accuracy of information obtained from previous reports, for the purposes of this report, it is assumed to be correct. Please refer to previous submittals for further historical information regarding the site. 2.0 CURRENT SITE ACTIVITIES The purpose of this report is to present the results of ground water monitoring activities conducted on January 11, 2016 at the Peele’s Service Station site. The activities were conducted in accordance with GRI proposal number 15-412, which was submitted to NCDEQ on July 6, 2015 and approved as Task Authorization No. 10000-55 on July 7, 2015. The purpose of the activities was to obtain current ground water quality data for the site. 3.0 GROUND WATER QUALITY Seven Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-2R, MW-3, MW-11, MW-14 and MW-15) were gauged, purged and sampled on January 11, 2016. No free product was observed in any of the monitoring wells. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells measured on January 11, 2016 ranged from 1.87 to 5.67 feet below the tops of well casings. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells relative to a temporary benchmark assumed by the previous consultant ranged from 95.69 to 98.75 feet. Based on the January 2016 gauging data, the ground water flow across the site was generally toward the northeast. The average horizontal hydraulic gradient in the vicinity of the source area was approximately 0.02 feet per foot. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring and water supply wells has been included as Figure 2. A Water Table Surface Map based on the January 2016 gauging data is included as Figure 3. Well construction and gauging information is presented in Table 1. Laboratory analyses were performed on the ground water samples collected from the above referenced monitoring wells for volatile organic compounds using EPA Method 6200B. Concentrations of benzene, xylenes, naphthalene, n-propylbenzene and/or 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene that exceeded the Maximum 2 Allowable Concentrations (MACs) specified in T15A NCAC 2L.0202 were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-2R, MW-11 and MW-14. None of the reported contaminant concentrations exceeded the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs). A Ground Water Quality Map based on data collected during the January 2016 sampling event is included as Figure 4. A summary of ground water sample analytical results is presented in Table 2. A complete laboratory report has been included as Appendix A. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS  The average depth to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells during the January 2016 sampling event was 3.49 feet. Ground water flow across the site during the January 2016 sampling event was generally toward the northeast with a horizontal hydraulic gradient in the vicinity of the source area of approximately 0.02 feet per foot.  Free product was not observed in any of the wells during the January 2016 sampling event.  Concentrations of benzene, xylenes, naphthalene, n-propylbenzene and/or 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene that exceeded the MACs were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-2R, MW- 11 and MW-14. None of the reported contaminant concentrations exceeded the GCLs.  Based on this information, a fate and transport model should be developed to determine if the contaminant plume poses a significant risk the nearest down-gradient receptor. An updated receptor survey should be completed during the next sampling event which is tentatively scheduled for July 2016. 5.0 LIMITATIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of North East Oil Company, Inc. for specific application to the referenced site in Martin County, North Carolina. The assessment was conducted based on the scope of work and level of effort desired by NCDEQ and with resources adequate only for that scope of work. Our findings have been developed in accordance with generally accepted standards of environmental practices in the State of North Carolina, available information, and our professional judgment. No other warranty is expressed or implied. The data that are presented in this report are indicative of conditions that existed at the precise locations sampled and at the time the samples were collected. In addition, the data obtained from samples would be interpreted as being meaningful with respect to parameters indicated in the laboratory report. No additional information can logically be inferred from these data. Please note that field data collected prior 3 to the March 2007 updated receptor survey and ground water monitoring event were not obtained under the supervision of GRI. Although the accuracy of this information cannot be verified, for the purpose of this report GRI assumes that it is correct.
