A. BACKGROUND
Site Check (15A NCAC 2N 0.0603(b))
Taylor's BP
10005 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina
The subject property (hereinafter is referred to as the "Site") is identified as the Taylor's BP and is
located at l0005 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. (See Section A, Figure 1 for
Site location.) The Site consists of an approximately 0.93 acre parcel of land currently owned by Taylor
& Gail Cash, and is occupied by Taylor's BP which operates two petroleum Underground Storage Tanks
(USTs) for the retail sale of gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuel.
One or more gasoline releases from UST systems have previously been documented at the Site while
either removing or abandoning in place several old UST systems during the 1990s. In addition, gasoline
related compounds have been detected in an on-Site water supply well which has since been taken out of
use.
This Site check consisted of the installation of a total of 17 Geoprobed soil borings advanced at the
locations inclicated in Section A, Figure 2. Nine borings (SS-1 through SS-9) were advanced adjacent
to the 20,000 and 4,000 gallon USTs to a total depth of 16 feet below land surface so that soi l samples
could be collected from these borings at depth of approximately 15 to 16 feet below land surface. These
soil samples were subsequently placed in Encore sampling devices for submittal to an analytical
laboratory for low boiling point Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis by EPA Method 5030.
The soil samples originating from borings SS-6, SS-7, SS-8 and SS-9 nearest the 4,000 gallon
kerosene/diesel UST were also submitted for high boiling point TPH testing by EPA Method 3550.
The soil borings identified as L-1 through L-5 were advanced adjacent to the gasoline product lines to a
total depth of 4 feet below land surface. Samples were collected from these borings at depth of
approximately 3 to 4 feet below land surface and submitted to an analytical laboratory for low boiling
point TPH analysis by EPA Method 5030.
Finally, the soil borings identified as P-.1 through P3 were advanced adjacent to the gasoline and
diesel/kerosene product dispensers to total depths ranging from 8 to 16 feet below land surface.
Samples collected from all of these borings were submitted to an analytical laboratory for sample
specific combination of tests including low boiling point TPH analysis by EPA Method 5030, volati le
organic compounds by EPA 8260, volatile petroleum hydrocarbons by the MADEP-VPH test and for
high boiling point TPH by EPA Method 3550.

Site Check (lSA NCAC 2N 0.0603(b))
Taylor's BP
10005 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina
B. SITE GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY
The Geologic Map of North Carolina 1 locates the Site within injected gneiss of the Raleigh Belt. More
specifically, the Geologic Map of North Carolina describes this injected gneiss as "biotite gneiss and
schist intruded by numerous sills and dikes of granite, pegmatite and aplite; minor borneblende gneiss".
Geoprobed borings advanced at the Site for completion of this Site Check encountered orange-red silty
clay from land surface down to about six feet below. From about six feet down to sixteen feet the
material became more orange-white in color and less clayey. Some white quartz pebbles were also
found towards the bottom of the borings. Neither competent rock nor groundwater was encountered in
any of the borings completed for this Site Check.
C. SOILS INVESTIGATION
C. I Geoprobed Soil Borings
As stated above, ECE mobilized to the Site on January 3, 2007 for the purpose of installing a series of 17
Geoprobed soil borings at the locations indicated in Section A, Figure 2. These activities were initiated
to check for the presence of low and high boiling point TPH by California Method 8015, with EPA
Methods 3550 and 5030 as sample preparation, for volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 8260
and for volatile petroleum hydrocarbons by the MADEP-VPH test.
C.3 Soil Sampling Results
Analytical data for the soil samples collected from borings SS-1 through SS-9, L-1 through L-5 and P-3
and analyzed for the presence of low boiling point TPH by EPA Method 5030 did not indicate the
presence of low boiling point TPH in any sample at levels above the method detection limits.
Analytical data for the soil samples collected from borings SS-6 through SS-9 and P-3 analyzed for the
presence of high boiling point TPH by EPA Method 3550 did show the presence of high boiling point
TPH at levels above the method detection limits in all five samples. Further, soil samples SS-6 and SS-7
detected higb boiling point TPH at levels (51 and 63 mglkg, respectively) in excess of the North
Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources action level of 40 mglkg.

Site Check (lSA NCAC 2N 0.0603(b))
Taylor's BP
10005 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina
The analytical results for soi l samples P-1 and P-2 collected from under the gasoline product dispensers
detected the presence of numerous compounds targeted by EPA Method 8260 and the MADEP-VPH
test. Many of these compounds were detected at levels in excess of their Soil to Groundwater Maximum
Soil Contaminant Concentrations as set forth in the "Guidelines for Assessment and Corrective Action"
prepared by the North Carolina Underground Storage Tank Section effective July I, 2001 (The
Guidelines. Four constituents (benzene, 1,2,4 trimethyl benzene, C5-C8 aliphatics and C9-ClO
aromatics) were also detected at levels in excess of their Residential Maximum Soi l Contaminant
Concentrations as set forth in the Guidelines. Table 1 in Section B is a summary of these analytical
results displayin g only detected contaminants.
The laboratory analytical report for the soil samples collected by ECE for completion of this Site check
are also presented as an attachment in Section C.

D. CONCLUSIONS
Site Check (ISA NCAC lN 0.0603(b))
Taylor's BP
10005 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina
ECE has completed this Site Check in order to characterize subsurface soil conditions immediately
surrounding two in-use UST systems on the property identified as the Taylor's BP located at I 0005 Six
Forks Road in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina.
One or more gasoline releases have already been documented at the Site while either removing or
abandoning in place old UST systems during the 1990s. In addition, gasoline related compounds have
been detected in an on-Site water supply well which has since been taken out of use.
This Site check consisted of the installation of a total of 17 Geoprobed soil borings at the locations
indicated in Section A, Figure 2. Nine borings (SS-1 through SS-9) were advanced adjacent to the in-
use 20,000 and 4,000 gallon USTs to a total depth of 16 feet below land surface. Soil samples were
coll ected from these borings at a depth of approximately 15 to 16 feet below land surface for submittal
to an analytical laboratory for low boiling point Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis by EPA
Method 5030. The soil samples originating from the boring nearest the 4,000 gallon kerosene/diesel
UST were also submitted for high boiling point TPH testing by EPA Method 3550.
The soi l borings identified as L-1 through L-5 were advanced adjacent to the gasoline product lines to a
total depth of 4 feet below land surface. Samples were collected from these borings at depth of
approximately 3 to 4 feet below land surface and submjtted to an analytical laboratory for low boiling
point TPH analysis by EPA Method 5030.
Finall y, the soil borings identified as P-1 through P3 were advanced adjacent to the gasoline and
kerosene/diesel product dispensers to total depths ranging from 8 to 16 feet below land surface. Samples
were collected from these borings at varying depths and submitted to the analytical laboratory for sample
specific combination of tests including low boiling point TPH analysis by EPA Method 5030, volatile
organic compounds by EPA 8260, volatile petroleum hydrocarbons by the MADEP-VPH test and/or for
high boiling point TPH by EPA Method 3550.
Data for the EPA 5030 test in the soil samples found detectable TPH levels in two soil samples
identified as P-1 and P-2 as well as several volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 8260. Finally,
the analytical results for the MADEP-VPH testing also detected targeted contaminants at elevated levels.

Site Check (lSA NCAC 2N 0.0603(b))
Taylor's BP
10005 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina
Based on the analytical results for soil samples collected for completion of this Site Check, it can be
stated that a release of gasoline has occurred in the vicinity of the gasoline product dispensers. Because
this product dispenser area has a history of gaso line use associated with previously removed and
abandoned in-place UST systems it cannot be detennined with certainty which UST system(s) is the
actual source of these detected gasoline contaminants. However, it should be noted that MTBE was not
detected in either of the two pump island soil samples submitted for the EPA 8260 analysis which
indicates that the source of this gasoline contamination may be one of the old releases already
documented at the Site. Further, the UST systems that are currently operational at the Site have recently
passed tightness testing which indicates that they are l.ikely not the source of the detected gasoline
contaminants.
ECE recommends that Taylor Cash forward a copy of this report to Mr. Bob Davies of the NCDENR-
UST Section, Raleigh Regional Office, 1628 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699.

Hi Jared,
I have reviewed the soil sampling for the site check appeal at Taylors Conv. Store Inc. number 11583.
It looks like 13 of the 17 the soil samples and associated analyticals would have been necessary in the CSA if the Site
Check was not performed.
Hope this helps and let me know if you need anything else.
