EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report covers the semi-annual period July 2022 through December 2022. The contaminant levels increased in MW-1: benzene, MTBE, naphthalene, and 1,2 DCE were detected above their standards, but all are well below their gross contaminant level. C. SITE HISTORY and CHARACTERIZATION Ray’s Country Store is a former convenience store that sold petroleum products from an underground storage tank system. A release occurred from the system and the groundwater was impacted. The AS/SVE system was shut down on February 1, 2017. This report covers the period July 2022 through December 2022. E. SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION 1.0 WATER SUPPLY WELL SAMPLING The Kendrick well is the only water supply well within 1,500 feet of the site, it was not sampled during this event. The former Ray’s building and Ms. Kendrick’s home were condemned by the City of Gastonia. The buildings have been locked and Ms. Kendrick lives in a tent on the property. The water supply well has not been used for several years because the pump is down and Ms. Kendrick has not had it repaired or replaced. Additionally, there is no power to the wellhouse – the meter box for the residence has been removed. 2 2.0 MONITOR WELL SAMPLING 2.1 Well Abandonment The following wells have been abandoned due to construction: MW – 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. A monitor well from the adjacent site has been utilized for MW-2, it is within ten feet of the original MW-2’s location and it is designated MW-2R. 2.2 Sampled Wells and Protocol DEQ requires that the following wells be sampled: MWs 1-3-5. The wells were sampled with new, disposable bailers after first gauging the wells and then purging three well casing volumes. The samples were placed in laboratory provided vials, fixed with a chain of custody, and placed on ice for shipment between the field, office, and laboratory. They were collected January 5, 2023 and immediately delivered to PACE Analytical. 2.3 Sampling Results The following four compounds were detected above their standards in MW-1: benzene, MTBE, naphthalene, and 1,2 DCE. Benzene was detected at its standard in MW-3. All are well below their gross contaminant levels. There have now been twenty-eight consecutive sampling events with all contaminants below their gross contaminant level. This is due to the overall contaminant reductions in MWs – 1 & 3, both of which initially contained free product. A review of the sampling results follows: MW-1: benzene (20 ppb), MTBE (27 ppb), naphthalene (7 ppb), and 1,2 DCE (2 ppb) all four > standard, but < GCL; MW-3: benzene: 1 ppb, = standard, but < GCL; and MW-5: non-detect. A comparison with the last sampling event follows: MW-1: BTEX/MTBE increase, MW-3: TEX increase, and MW-5: BTEX/MTBE remain non-detect. Natural attenuation is effective as the contaminant levels have decreased to minor levels, with all compounds well below their gross contaminant level. The results are presented in Table B-4, Table 1 is a historical summary of the sampling results, linear and log time/concentration graphs are attached, and the laboratory analysis is attached. Individual BTEX/MTBE maps are attached; two maps are presented for each compound, a large scale map shows the entire area, and the other focuses on the site property. F. FREE PRODUCT – not applicable G. SOIL REMEDIATION – not applicable 3 H. GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION – not applicable I. CONCLUSIONS Compound levels increased in MWs 1 & 3, but they remain extremely low; MW-5 remained non-detect. Four compounds were detected above their standard but all four are well below their gross contaminant level. Natural attenuation has been effective in reducing the contaminants to minor levels, J. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited.
