To support the installation of an amended final cover system for the Marshall Steam Station Dry Ash Landfill
Phase II (1804-INDUS), Duke Energy requests approval to abandon 14 observation and groundwater
monitoring wells located within the limit of waste of the landfill.
Two of the wells requested for abandonment include landfill compliance observation wells OB-2 and OB-3.
The attached Figure (Figure 2 Sample Locations) has the observations wells requested for abandonment
circled. The 12 groundwater monitoring wells, AL-2S/D/BR/BRL/BRLL/BRLLL, AL-3S/D/BR, AL-4D/BR/BRL,
are associated with the Coal Ash Management Act (CAMA) Interim Monitoring Program (IMP). The attached
Figure (Figure 1 Sample Location Map) has the monitoring wells requested for abandonment circled. A
separate request has also been submitted to the Division of Water Resource Regional Office for approval to
abandon these monitoring wells.
Abandonment of the observation wells will be supervised by qualified geotechnical field support that is under
the direct supervision of and in contact with a Licensed Geologist. The piezometer will be abandoned by a
North Carolina licensed well contractor in accordance with subchapter 02C of the North Carolina Administrative
Code. Duke Energy will provide well abandonment records to the Division upon completion of the field work.
