DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: 12/24/2022 @ 7:00 AM
HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
The Fire Chief (Jerry Starr) of South Iredell Fire and Rescue called me at 7:00 AM on Christmas Eve. He lives off of Patterson Farm Road, and he saw smoke in the
valley of Coddle Creek which is due East of our facility. He met me at the gate to the facility at 7:30 AM.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
Dirt was used to cover smoldering and smoking areas around the edge of the landfill. Dirt was tracked in and compacted by bulldozer.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
Spontaneous Combustion
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
An area 20 feet wide by 250 feet long (5,000 square feet) on the Southern and Eastern sides of the working face of the landfill began to smolder and create smoke.
The area contained stumps and brush.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
The area should have been covered with a minimum of one foot of dirt sooner.
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
We will continue to monitor the landfill and follow the operating rules as described in the NC state statutes for LCID landfills. In addition, we will put dirt on any
>pots that we see steaming or smoking.
