Monitoring Well Installation Notification
Dear Ms. Drummond:
On behalf of Buncombe County, SCS Engineers, PC (SCS) presents this letter report documenting the
installation of two groundwater monitoring wells (MW-16 and MW-16D) and two gas monitoring wells
(M-5 and M-6) at the Buncombe County MSW Landfill. The monitoring wells were installed as part of
the Cell 7 MSW Landfill expansion.
In September 2022, SCS noted location conflicts for the proposed wells during the Cell 7
construction. On behalf of the County, Bunnell Lammons Engineering submitted revised well
locations on September 16, 2022, which the SWS approved.
Upon approval of the revised locations, SCS contracted with MW Drilling, a licensed North Carolina
drilling contractor, to install the wells. On September 27, 2022, SCS personnel and MW Drilling
mobilized to perform the well installation. MW Drilling advanced the borings using air rotary
technology.
Monitoring Well MW-16 was advanced to 46 feet below ground surface (ft. bgs.) and was installed
with 10 feet of two-inch diameter 0.010-inch slotted Schedule-40 PVC screen followed by two-inch
Schedule-40 PVC riser to approximately three feet above ground surface. MW Drilling emplaced
clean filter sand in the boring annulus to two feet above the top of the screen, followed by three feet
of hydrated bentonite chips and neat cement grout to ground surface. A three-foot steel stick-up
casing encased in a concrete pad provided the surface completion. The top of the well casing was
fitted with a locking expansion plug. Initial depth to groundwater measured 13.2 ft. bgs.
Monitoring Well MW-16D was advanced to 76 ft. bgs. and was installed using 15 feet of two-inch
diameter 0.010-inch slotted Schedule-40 PVC screen followed by two-inch diameter Schedule-40
PVC rise that extended to three ft. above ground surface. MW Drilling emplaced clean filter sand in
the boring annulus to two feet above the top of the screen, followed by three feet of hydrated
bentonite chips and neat cement grout to ground surface. A three-foot steel stick-up casing encased

in a concrete pad provided the surface completion. Table 1 presents the monitoring well details and
Appendix A presents the monitoring well construction diagrams.
Upon completion of the groundwater monitoring wells, MW Drilling installed the two gas monitoring
wells, M-5 and M-6. Gas Monitoring Well M-5 was installed to eight ft. bgs., based on the initial
depth -to -groundwater measurement collected from newly installed MW-16 of 13.1 ft. bgs. The M-5
construction included 3 feet of two-inch diameter 0.010-inch slotted PVC screen followed by five feet
of two-inch PVC riser to approximately three ft. above ground surface. MW Drilling emplaced clean
filter sand to 0.5 ft. above the top of the screen, followed by 2.5 ft. of hydrated bentonite pellets, and
neat cement grout to the ground surface. A PVC cap with a quick connect fitting sealed the pipe and
MW Drilling installed a locking steel stick—up completion set in a concrete pad.
Gas Monitoring Well M-6 was installed to 25 ft. bgs with 20 ft. of two-inch 0.010-inch PVC screen,
followed by two-inch PVC riser to three ft. above ground surface. Clean filter sand was emplaced to
0.5 ft above the top of the screen, followed by 2.5 ft. of hydrated bentonite pellets, and neat cement
grout to the ground surface. A PVC cap with a quick connect fitting sealed the pipe and MW Drilling
installed a locking steel stick—up completion set in a concrete pad. Table 1 presents the monitoring
well details; and Appendix A presents the monitoring well construction diagrams. Boring logs are
provided in Appendix B, and the well completion reports are provided in Appendix C.
