Box 219 Morganton, NC 28680 RE: Burke County, Johns River Landfill Permit Number 12-03 Third Quarter 2022 Landfill Gas Monitoring Report Project 2212740.00, Phase 04 Dear Mark: LaBella Associates (LaBella) is submitting the attached methane monitoring results for the Johns River Landfill, Permit Number 12-03. The 2022 third quarter landfill gas monitoring event was performed on August 9, 2022. During this event, gas probes GP-1S, GP-1D, GP-2S, GP-21, GP-2D, GP-4, GP-5, GP-6, GP-7, and GP-8 were monitored in accordance with the facility's Landfill Gas Monitoring Plan. The gas vents in the old C&D-over-MSW waste unit (GV-1 through GV-7) were also monitored. The facility buildings, including the scale house (GMP-1), the shop (GMP-2), the office (GMP-3), the shed (GMP-4), the shooting range (GMP-13), and the Recycling Center (GMP-14) were also monitored on August 9, 2022, as were ambient air monitoring points GMP-5 through GMP-12. The locations of the gas probes and monitoring points are depicted in Drawing 1. The monitoring data for the gas probes and buildings are summarized in the attached Landfill Gas Monitoring Data Forms. The lower explosive limit (LEL) for methane is 5% by volume and the LEL for hydrogen sulfide is 4% by volume. Methane was detected above the LEL in gas probe, GP-2S (28.9%); however, the GP-2 probes are not considered boundary probes, they are located between the old, closed landfill and the active C&D landfill. Neither methane nor hydrogen sulfide were detected above the LEL in any other gas probes or ambient air locations, nor were they detected above 25% of the LEL in any of the buildings. Methane and hydrogen sulfide detections are summarized in Table 1. Exceedances of the LEL are summarized in Table 2. Hydrogen sulfide was not detected above 1 part per million (ppm) in any of the gas probes, monitoring points, or structures; however, it was detected above 5 ppm in gas vents, GV-2, GV-5, and GV-7. Hydrogen sulfide was detected in exceedance of the short-term exposure limit (STEL) in gas vent, GV-7 at 44 ppm. Note that the OSHA STEL for hydrogen sulfide is 15 ppm. These are potentially dangerous concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, so precautions should be taken by any person working near the gas vents. 12-D Oak Branch Drive I Greensboro, NC 27407 P (336) 323-0092 www.Labellapc.com e We have included a NCDEQ Environmental Monitoring Report Form (EMRF) and will forward a copy of this report to Jaclynne Drummond with the NCDEQ Solid Waste Section. A copy of this report should be maintained in the facility's records. The next quarterly monitoring event is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022. If we can provide any additional information, please do not hesitate to call me at (336) 323-0092.
