Re: Remedial Action Progress Report, 2022 Second Quarter
Former Seaboard Chemical and Riverdale Drive Landfill Site
Jamestown, Guilford County, North Carolina
Dear Mr. Aufderhaar:
The Seaboard Group II and the City of High Point are providing this 2022 Second Quarter
Remedial Action Progress Report for the former Seaboard Chemical Corporation facility and the
closed Riverdale Drive Landfill located in Jamestown, NC.
During the second quarter of 2022 the mechanical and phytoremediation treatment systems
processed 2,985,745 gallons of extracted groundwater and leachate. Also during the second
quarter of 2022 the following shutdowns exceeding one day in duration occurred:
Date
Duration
Reason for Shutdown
June 3, 2022
3.0 days
Hydraulic system failure to sludge drying boxes
June 10, 2022
4.5 days
Hydraulic system failure to sludge drying boxes
Also, blower motor failure to air stripper
June 17, 2022
3.5 days
Power failure from storms resulting in PLC issues
June 25, 2022
2.0 days
Differential pressure in bag filters
The additional remedial activities outlined in approved Technical Memorandum E-11 (TM-E-11)
have been implemented and are operable. The two extraction wells at the former Seaboard Pond
3 Area (R-1 and PW-SF1) and the SIS Basin Area (RW-SIS7 and RW-SIS8) have been
incorporated into the remedial system and are performed as expected. For the purposes of the
quarterly Extraction System Evaluation Monitoring, a start date of the last week in June 2022
will be used. The first quarterly evaluation samples will be collected during the last week of
September 2022.
Repairs have been completed for an erosion control structure on the western lobe of the
phytoremediation zone. These repairs included stabilization of drainage channels entering the
control structure, planting of loblolly pines to reduce soil moisture levels, and replacement of a
slope drain. Photographs of these repairs are attached to this correspondence.
The design of the irrigation line replacements has been completed and acquisition of the
materials needed for the work has begun. The clearing and site preparation work will begin this
fall with an estimated completion date of the first quarter of 2023.
The batteries and charge controllers have been replaced at each of the groundwater level
transducers. The transducers are operable, however, communication errors are still occurring
between the radios and the PLC system. If the existing radios cannot be repaired, a new
communication system will be required.
The attached figures provide the results of the full scale operation of the treatment system during
the first quarter of 2022, including: Operating Data, Process Flow Data, Static Water Level Data,
System Chemistry, Utility Use Data, and Contaminant Mass Removal.
Please contact Mr. Gary D. Babb (919/605-4719) or Craig Coslett (610/435-1151) if there are

i Apparent variations in the influent and effluent mass are a result of variations related to residence time through the mechanical
treatment system. Averages calculated from a greater number of samples show that influent and effluent mass are essentially equal.
