(If additional space is needed, use back of this form) NAME OF FACILITY: Cherokee County Landfill PERMIT # 2002-MSWLF-1998 DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: 4-23-2022 @ 13:30 [TOW WAS THE FIRE REPOlZFEL) ANi] tiY WHOM: ",ocal resident.Mr. Tim West was'thrcwing household trash into the green boxes at the Landfill Convenience Center after the landfill had closed on Saturday 1-23-2022 and he noticed smoke coming from the top of the landfill. Mr. West called the Marble Fire Dept who responded to the fire. LIST ACTIONS TAKEN: I'he Marble Fire Department cut the lock off of the landfill gate and extinguished the fire at the tipping face tinder the daily cover of a tarp that covered the trash. A 'ire Department responder knew Landfill employee Jason Roland and called him to report the fire. Mr. Roland came to the landfill and observed that the fire had )een extinguished and a portion of the tarp had been destroyed. Mr. Roland contacted the Solid Waste Director Rob Ward who asked the Fire Department to put additional water on the area of the fire. After the fire departm&At was finished Mr. Roland covered the area with 6" of cover dirt which restored Daily Cover. WHAT WAS THE CAUS OF T'HE HM: ,arise of fire remains unknown. The fire was not noticed until after the landfill had closed for the day at 12:00. Suspected causes are hot ashes that were disposed of n the trash, or possibly lithium batteries, may have caused the fire. DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED: )n the working face of the landfill a small fire started from an unknown cause under the tarp used for daily cover. A less than 10' x 10' area of ordinary MSW trash vas charred and damaged the taip that had been placed over the working face. Less than 2 CY of MSW was charred in a smoldering fire at the working face of the andfill. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department and the fire did not re -ignite. The charred area was then covered with dirt. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE: 3etter screening of the MSW before and during dumping may have identified the source of the smoldering fire so that it could have been avoided. But, the exact ounce of the fire retrains unknown. DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS: Landfill operators are more carefully watching the MSW stream for hot ashes and lithium batteries to extinguish or abate potential sources. The melted tarp was replaced with a new one.
