It is our understanding that two former heating oil USTs were previously located at the site. The USTs were reportedly removed in 2019 and located in the same basin according to the current property owner. Pilot did not observe water supply wells within 150 feet of the source area of the release, and it is our understanding that the property is connected to the municipal water supply. Based on the findings of the Phase I ESA completed by others, Pilot was requested by Ms. Lisa Bornt Davis to provide environmental services associated with the former USTs. 2.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES The field activities were completed on September 23, 2021 and observed by Pilot. Soil and groundwater samples were collected using a Geoprobe® drill rig. The Geoprobe° consists of a hydraulic jack mounted on an ATV (All -Terrain Vehicle) capable of driving various forms of groundwater and soil sampling probes into the ground to depths equivalent of auger refusal. The Geoprobe® subcontractor used for this project was 3D Environmental Investigations, LLC (3D). Prior to initiating the first boring and between each subsequent boring, the Geoprobe° drill rig and associated boring equipment were decontaminated with a high-pressure steam cleaner. 2.1 Soil Sampling Two soil borings (S-1 and S-2, Drawing 3) were drilled in the likely vicinity of the former USTs to a depth of approximately 15 feet below ground surface (bgs). Soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals through the termination depth of each boring and classified in the field by a Pilot professional. Pilot personnel wore a new pair of disposable nitrile gloves during the sampling process. The soil samples were screened using a photoionization detector (PID). The soil sample exhibiting the highest reading on the PID or most obvious signs of impact were collected for laboratory analysis. Based on obvious indications of impact in soil boring S-2, a soil sample was not analyzed from soil boring S-1. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the sample at approximately 4° Celsius. The soil sample was transported to Pace Analytical (Pace) in Kernersville, North Carolina for analysis. The soil sample collected was analyzed for gasoline and/or diesel range total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) using EPA Methods 8015/5035 and 8015/3550, respectively. A chain of custody was maintained for the sample and is included in Appendix A. Page 1 Report of Environmental Services Pilot Project G-7234 October 7, 2021 2.2 Groundwater Sampling One discreet groundwater boring (GW-1, Drawing 3) was advanced in the apparent vicinity of the former USTs at the site. The groundwater boring was advanced to a depth of approximately 37 feet bgs to allow for the collection of a groundwater sample. The groundwater sample was collected using a groundwater sampling probe. The groundwater sampling probe is a 1-inch diameter stainless steel probe with a 48-inch screened interval inside of a perforated stainless -steel sleeve. When the desired sampling depth is reached, the sampler is retracted approximately four feet, exposing 0.145 mm stainless steel screen allowing water to enter the stainless -steel probe for sampling. Prior to sampling, the groundwater boring was developed, purged and sampled using a peristaltic pump and a new length of polyethylene tubing. The groundwater boring was purged to remove silt and sediment from the groundwater and to collect a representative sample of groundwater. During the sampling process, Pilot personnel wore a new pair of disposable nitrile gloves. Following purging of the groundwater boring, a groundwater sample was collected and placed into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately 4° Celsius. The sample was transported to Pace to be analyzed for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B and SVOCs using EPA Method 625BNA. 3.0 RESULTS 3.1 Soil Samples Laboratory analysis of soil samples S-2 detected gasoline and diesel range TPH above their respective North Carolina Action Levels. A summary of the soil analytical results is presented in Table 1. The laboratory data sheets are included in the Appendix. 3.2 Groundwater Samples Laboratory analysis of groundwater sample GW-1 did not detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limits. A summary of the groundwater analytical results is presented in Table 2. The laboratory data sheets are included in the Appendix. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Pilot collected one soil sample and one discreet groundwater sample at the site. Laboratory analysis of soil samples S-2 detected gasoline and diesel range TPH above their respective North Carolina Action Levels. Page 2 Report of Environmental Services Pilot Project G-7234 October 7, 2021 Laboratory analysis of groundwater sample GW-1 did not detect targeted compounds above the laboratory detection limits. Based upon the detected concentrations, Pilot recommends that the current property owner be notified and that they submit a copy of this report to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) for their review. Prior to a property transaction occurring and to obtain incident closure a Notice of Residual Petroleum (NORP) will need to be filed and public notice issued. If impacted soil is encountered during redevelopment activities, it should be handled and disposed in accordance with the NCDEQ regulations. 5.0 QUALIFICATIONS OF REPORT The activities and evaluative approaches used in this assessment are consistent with those normally employed in assessment projects of this type. Our evaluation of site conditions has been based on our understanding of the project information and the data obtained during our field activities. This report was prepared for the exclusive use of Penn State Management. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL -Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean -Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TN -The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS LO Analyte recovery in the laboratory control sample (LCS) was outside QC limits. This is not intended as a comprehensive explanation, and if you have additional questions please contact your project representative. Results Disclaimer - Information that may be provided by the customer, and contained within this report, include Permit Limits, Project Name, Sample ID, Sample Matrix, Sample Preservation, Field Blanks, Field Spikes, Field Duplicates, On -Site Data, Sampling Collection Dates/Times, and Sampling Location. Results relate to the accuracy of this information provided, and as the samples are received. Abbreviations and Definitions (dry) Results are reported based on the dry weight of the sample. [this will only be present on a dry report basis for soils]. MDL Method Detection Limit. MDL (dry) Method Detection Limit. RDL Reported Detection Limit. RDL (dry) Reported Detection Limit. Rec. Recovery. RPD Relative Percent Difference. SDG Sample Delivery Group. Surrogate (Surrogate Standard) - Analytes added to every blank, sample, Laboratory Control Sample/Duplicate and (S) Matrix Spike/Duplicate; used to evaluate analytical efficiency by measuring recovery. Surrogates are not expected to be detected in all environmental media. U Not detected at the Reporting Limit (or MDL where applicable). Analyte The name of the particular compound or analysis performed. Some Analyses and Methods will have multiple analytes reported. If the sample matrix contains an interfering material, the sample preparation volume or weight values differ from the Dilution standard, or if concentrations of analytes in the sample are higher than the highest limit of concentration that the laboratory can accurately report, the sample may be diluted for analysis. If a value different than 1 is used in this field, the result reported has already been corrected for this factor. These are the target % recovery ranges or % difference value that the laboratory has historically determined as normal Limits for the method and analyte being reported. Successful QC Sample analysis will target all analytes recovered or duplicated within these ranges. Original Sample The non -spiked sample in the prep batch used to determine the Relative Percent Difference (RPD) from a quality control sample. The Original Sample may not be included within the reported SDG. This column provides a letter and/or number designation that corresponds to additional information concerning the result Qualifier reported. If a Qualifier is present, a definition per Qualifier is provided within the Glossary and Definitions page and potentially a discussion of possible implications of the Qualifier in the Case Narrative if applicable. The actual analytical final result (corrected for any sample specific characteristics) reported for your sample. If there was no measurable result returned for a specific analyte, the result in this column may state "ND" (Not Detected) or "BDL" Result (Below Detectable Levels). The information in the results column should always be accompanied by either an MDL (Method Detection Limit) or RDL (Reporting Detection Limit) that defines the lowest value that the laboratory could detect or report for this analyte. Uncertainty (Radiochemistry) Confidence level of 2 sigma. A brief discussion about the included sample results, including a discussion of any non -conformances to protocol Case Narrative (Cn) observed either at sample receipt by the laboratory from the field or during the analytical process. If present, there will be a section in the Case Narrative to discuss the meaning of any data qualifiers used in the report. Quality Control This section of the report includes the results of the laboratory quality control analyses required by procedure or Summary (Qc) analytical methods to assist in evaluating the validity of the results reported for your samples. These analyses are not being performed on your samples typically, but on laboratory generated material. This is the document created in the field when your samples were initially collected. This is used to verify the time and Sample Chain of date of collection, the person collecting the samples, and the analyses that the laboratory is requested to perform. This Custody (Sc) chain of custody also documents all persons (excluding commercial shippers) that have had control or possession of the samples from the time of collection until delivery to the laboratory for analysis. This section of your report will provide the results of all testing performed on your samples. These results are provided Sample Results (Sr) by sample ID and are separated by the analyses performed on each sample. The header line of each analysis section for each sample will provide the name and method number for the analysis reported. Sample Summary (Ss) This section of the Analytical Report defines the specific analyses performed for each sample ID, including the dates and times of preparation and/or analysis. Qualifier Description J The identification of the analyte is acceptable; the reported value is an estimate. J4 The associated batch QC was outside the established quality control range for accuracy. J7 Surrogate recovery cannot be used for control limit evaluation due to dilution.
