NAME OF FACILITY: Iredell County Solid Waste Facility
DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: 12/29/2021
@ b:20am
PERMIT # 4903-MSWLF
HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
Roger Eades the landfill supervisor was the first person on the scene. He assessed the fire and called 911, who dispatched Wayside Voluteer Fire Department to help
in containing the fire.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
Solid Waste personnel utilized the water truck on site to start wetting the ,,moldering leaf pile while the fire department was on their way. Once the fire department
arrived they had two tanker trucks and in combination with ottr own water truck continued to douse the smoldering leaf pile. We then took excavators, dozers and
articulating trucks to relocate the smoldering pan of the pile to another location where we could wet the pile down better. There never was a big flare up it was
mainly smoldering with aome embers present.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
After digging down in the pile we did rind a hot -spot about 8' down and about 10' fron the edge of the leaf pile. Spontaneous Combustion appears to be the cause of
the fire. We have been wetting the pile down because of it being so dry.
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
We took out around 50S ?ards ofleaves and deposited them beside the existing leaf pile so we could spread them out and wet them down with water_ Composition of
material was leaves and leaves that had started to decompose. The overall area of the leaf pile contains close to 100,000 yards of leaves.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
We have never had a fire in the leaf pile before. Continued wetting down of pile on a regular basis will help to make sure this does not happen again
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
Wetting down pile on a regular basis, turning pile more often, checking temperature of the pile on a regular basis
