NAME OF FACILITY: Mooresville Transfer Station PERMIT # 4904T Transfer 1998
DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: 11/16/2021 @ 6 pm
HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
Supervisor Jawayne Torrence was notified by a customer that a fire extinguisher was needed. Jawayne contacted Director Teddy Boller after Mooresville Fire was
called.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
Station employees used water and a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Mooresville Fire and Rescue used water from their truck to saturate the material and
extinguish the hot spots. Burnt material was segregated and loaded in 40 yard roll -off box. Waste was transported to the landfill at 6am to be placed on dirt pad in the
lined cell area for further observation.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
Customer brought in a burn barrel and emptied the ashes on the tipping floor. When the ashes were exposed to air and other dry household waste, ignition occurred.
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
The area of the fire was on the Mooresville tipping floor in the middle of the customer drop off area. There was 5900 pounds of household material involved.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
This incident occurred at the end of shift while attendant was trying to do final daily cleaning. If attendant would have seen the customer with burn barrel, customer
would have been turned away without dumping. We do not accept burnt material at our facilities.
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
Employees will be re-trained on the importance of watching and screening all incoming waste.
