Dear Mr. Matthews:
RE: Landfill Reclassification
Solid Waste Permit No. 56-03
Collins & Aikman Sanitary Landfill
McDowell County, North Carolina
Writer's Direct Dial
(704) 548-2200
Collins & Aikman operates a sanitary landfill in McDowell County.
This landfill is a monofill facility dedicated solely to the
disposal of waste automotive carpet from our carpet molding
operation in Old Fort. Carpet trim waste is baled at the plant,
transported to the disposal facility, and landfilled in baled form.
We have operated this facility continuously since 1981.
We request that our landfill be reclassified from a municipal to an
industrial solid waste facility. This would include relief or
exemption from municipal landfill regulations, specifically
requirements related to linings. our justification for this
request is that the monofill is basically an inert material, which
does not degrade in the absence of sunlight, and the landfill is
restricted to use only by Collins & Aikman. Further, four years of
surface and groundwater analyses have shown no appreciable change
in water quality (See attached analysis summary).
we appreciate your serious consideration and would welcome the
opportunity to meet with you to further discuss our request.
Sincerely,
COLLINS & AIKMAN CORPORAATTION
