To: N1NW328@NRONA01 Date: Wed, 25 Sep 1996 09:67:19 +1100 Subject: McDowell Co. Field Trip Priority: normal Summary of recent events: contaminants have been detected and confirmed in 1 monitoring well at the Co. landfill site. The monitoring well is located in a corner of the Co.'s property that joins the Board of Education/School Bus Garage parking lot and an NCDOT facility. The contaminants are BTEXs and solvents. Paints, asphalts, fuels and solvents were used on the NCDOT property in this area and buses have been parked in this area for years. Staining from several products are evident on the surface soils. Al Hetzell and myself have been working w/ the Co. and NCDOT to further the investigation in order to determine a source. Yesterday we met w/ reps from both NCDOT and the Co. and descibed the situation. NCDOT proposed to put in 4 MWs (2 on their property, 1 on the BOE property and 1 on the Co.'s property) and we all agreed on the proposed locations. These 4 wells will help us determine GW flow direction and contaminant source. I'll keep you posted. FYI, kudos to Mr. Hetzell for keeping this thing going over the past 12 months. Mark - Thanks for the update, and thanks to you AND All for the good work and leadership in moving this case along. Look forward to hearing of further progress. -Phil hc: Julian Philip J.
