HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021.04.29_CCO.p19_DEQExtensionGrant April 29, 2021 Ms. Dawn Hughes Plant Manager Chemours Fayetteville Works 22828 NC Highway 87 W Fayetteville NC 28306 Re: Consent Order Paragraph 19 Extension Request Dear Ms. Hughes, Paragraph 19 of the Consent Order states that “Chemours shall establish and properly maintain permanent replacement drinking water supplies in the form of public water or whole building filtration system for any party (household, business, school, or public building) with a private drinking water well that has been found through testing validated by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to be contaminated with concentrations of GenX compounds in excess of 140 ng/L, or any applicable health advisory, whichever is lower.” DEQ issued a response letter to Chemours regarding the feasibility of municipal water in Bladen County west of the Cape Fear River while areas in Cumberland County (west of the river) continue to be evaluated. Paragraph 25 of the Consent Order states, “For good cause shown, Chemours may submit to DEQ one or more requests for extensions of up to three months each for any deadline specified in paragraphs 19-24. By a letter dated March 15, 2021, DEQ granted such an extension to April 30, 2021, for Chemours to meet the paragraph 19 requirements in Bladen and Cumberland Counties west of the Cape Fear River. Chemours has requested, pursuant to paragraph 25 of the Consent Order, a further extension of 3 months to meet the paragraph 19 requirements in Bladen and Cumberland Counties west of the Cape Fear River. DEQ received the request for an extension of the deadline in paragraph 19 of the consent order from Chemours dated April 23, 2021. DEQ hereby grants an extension of three months, until July 30, 2021 for the company to comply with the requirements of paragraph 19 of the Consent Order. Sincerely, Sushma Masemore, P.E.
