NAME OF FACILITY: Macon County MSW Landfill PERMIT # 57-03
DATE AND TIME OF FIRE: 3/12/2021 @ 7:00pm
HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
A call was made to 911 Dispatch; who then contacted Solid Waste Director, Chris Stahl, via cellphone. I called Nick Fowler on the way to the landfill (he lives
closest to the landfill) in case equipment needed to be moved away from the working face.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
911 was called back to send fire trucks. Nick began moving stockpiled dirt closer to the working face to smother fire. Once fire departments arrived, Nick spread
dirt over the working face while firemen sprayed waste and dozer with water. Once flames extinguished; an excavator was brought from the borrow area to dig into
the waste several feet while firemen sprayed the wastes being pulled from the face with a deluge hose. Once all visual indications of smoldering wastes were gone,
fire departments left, and landfill staff periodically checked on landfill throughout the night. Saturday morning; after confirming no additional smoke or flames; the
entire area was covered with at least 6 inches of soil.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
Unknown. Fire was confined to the working face, but had spread over the entire face before we arrived on scene. Any additional evidence of cause or ignition
location were destroyed in the process of extinguishing the fire, ft is assumed that something in the waste caught fire under the tarp (ADC) after operations ended fbr
the day.
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
The entire working face was ablaze when we arrived; an area approximately 50-feet wide by 30-feet high. The working face was a side -slope of an initial "fluff'
layer. While the fire remained confined to the surface, we did find smoldering wastes as deep as 3-5-feet deep.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
Better adherence to proper disposal of wastes by someone(s) in the general public. Use of 6-inches of daily cover rather than approved Alternate Daily Cover (tarp)
may have helped; depending on source of fire.
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
Maintain active programs of waste screening and visual observation of all wastes being dumped.
