EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The site has been inactive due to its rank; the last sampling event was in September 2015. Updated groundwater sampling was required. The site was sampled April 14, 2020; a summary follows: (1) MW-1 (source well): benzene (44 ppb) was the only compound detected above its standard, and (2) MWs 2-3-4-5, and VMW-1: all non -detect. Two noteworthy water supply wells from the 2015 well survey were checked: WSWs 3 & 6. WSW-3 was not in use but had the potential for use as an irrigation well, there has been no change in the status of this well. WSW-6 was a potable well 1,015 feet down gradient of the source area. The residence serviced by this well is now serviced by municipal water. C. SITE HISTORY and CHARACTERIZAION A release was discovered from the petroleum facilities during a property assessment performed in February and March 2004; the assessment was performed due to the potential sale of the property. The petroleum facilities were removed in June 2004, they consisted of the following USTs: (1) one 4000 gallon - gasoline, (2) two 6,000 gallon - gasoline, (3) one 2000 gallon - diesel, (4) one 1000 gallon -kerosene, and (5) one 550 gallon heating oil. A Closure report was submitted on July 16, 2004, soil contamination >10 ppm of TPH was discovered at all of the USTs and along a gasoline product line. A phase 2 LSA was performed in November and December 2004. Multiple compounds were detected above their groundwater standards at the former UST basin, and EDB was detected above its gross contaminant level. There were ten water supply wells within 1,500 feet of the source area, but none of the wells within 1,000 feet were potable. The site was given an intermediate rank and further work was suspended. The site was activated in 2010 with scheduled groundwater monitoring. Monitor well 5 was installed 70 feet down gradient of MW-1 in October 2015. Based on the September/October 2015 sampling results, and an updated water supply well survey, DENR determined that the site could be closed with a notice of residual petroleum. A notice was not filed as the property owner's consent was not obtained. No further action was taken until this sampling event. E. SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION 1.0 WATER SUPPLY WELL SAMPLING No water supply wells were sampled. No potable water supply wells were found within 1,000 feet of the source area by the 2015 water supply well survey. One potable well was identified within 1,500 feet; it was the Moose residence well (WSW-6), at 1,015 feet. The survey found five wells within 1,000 feet of the source area: four had been replaced by municipal water and the fifth (WSW-3 / Dover well) was not in use. The Dover well was located on a vacant lot; it had no power and the piping had been cut. Mr. Dover did not want to abandon his well as he was considering using the property for "urban farming" and thought the well could be used for irrigation. The Moose and Dover wells were checked for this report, the results follow. 1. Moose Residence / WSW-6 The City of Concord Utilities Department was contacted and the department now provides municipal water to the Moose residence. 2. Dover Well / WSW-3 The Dover well was inspected during this sampling event and there has been no change since 2015. The property remains vacant; there is no evidence of farming. 2.0 MONITOR WELL SAMPLING 2.1 Sampling Protocol Monitor wells 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and VMW-1 were sampled April 14, 2020 with new, individual, disposable bailers after first gauging the wells and then purging three well casing volumes. The samples were placed in laboratory provided vials, fixed with a chain of custody, and placed on ice for immediate delivery to PACE Analytical. 2.2 Sampling Results The samples were analyzed by EPA method 6200B. The results are posted in Table B-4 and a historical sampling results table is attached. A summary follows: MW-1: benzene (44 ppb) > standard / < GCL, MW-2: non -detect, MW-3: non -detect, MW-4: non -detect, MW-5: non -detect, and VMW-1: non -detect. A comparison with the 2015 sampling event follows: MW-1: BTEX/MTBE decrease, MW-2: remain non -detect, MW-3: remain non -detect, MW-4: remain non -detect, MW-5: MTBE (only 2015 detection) decrease to <1, and VMW-1: remain non -detect. F. FREE PRODUCT — none G. SOIL REMEDIATION -- not applicable H. GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION Natural attenuation is effective at the site as all detected compounds decreased in MW-1 and MTBE has dropped to non -detect in MW-5. I. CONCLUSIONS Groundwater contaminants are present in MW-1; benzene is the only compound detected above its standard, but it is well below its gross contaminant level. Contaminant levels decreased from the 2015 sampling event. The Moose residence is serviced by municipal water; their well was the only potable well from the 2015 survey. The Dover well status has not changed; it is not in use and the property is not developed. J. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL -Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean -Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI -The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS M1 Matrix spike recovery exceeded QC limits. Batch accepted based on laboratory control sample (LCS) recovery. Do not click links or open attachments unless you verify. Send all s 91W ent to Ebort.spam@nc.gov Thanks, I missed this. The report is attached, a CD should have been included with the paper report. It looks as if DENR doesn't really want the report by email; I assume you're helping me out on this one. Few questions: -) DENR prefer the report be submitted on the FTP site? -) if so, how access the site - need to get access from Ron? -) reads as if I may not get access, mentions still sending CDs; if so then mail CD only, no paper copy? Sorry to bother you with this - please send name if someone is designated to help with this.
