Laboratory results forwarded by your April 23, 1976, letter
hive been discussed with personnel of the Environmental Sciences
rach, Laboratory Section, Division of health Services. The
results were found to be in error and this was discussed with
Dr. Lee C. Kent of Commonwealth Laboratory. Ne indicated that
in order to clear,up the laboratory discrepancies he would need
another sludge sample to be provided by Cranston Print Works
Company and that the analysis would be provided at no charge.
The sample provided this office as well as laboratory results
sho\•: tl.e moisture content of the sludge to be too hidh for sanitary
landfill acceptance. A copy of the state policy for receiving
dry sewage sludge is provided. . g
No further action will be taken until clarifying information
is received.

Sludge Disposal on Henderson County Landfill

Public Health, regarding Cranst.on's use of the County's landfill for
ultimate sludge disposal. We also sent to your office two sludge
samples for you to inspect and analyze as you saw fit. You requested
that we have a complete laboratory analysis run on sludge samples and
enclosed in this Letter is the findings of Commonwealth Laboratory,
Greenville, S. C. The parameters tested were not randomly chosen bul:
instead were derived from conversations with other Industrial plants
who dispose of their waste sludge on landfill sites. The laboratory
procedures used by CcnL-gonwealth are outlined at the end of their report.
On April 22, 1976 representatives of Cranston Print- Cti,orks met with
P•Ar. Dan Jones and his assistant. After .reviewing his visit of August 7,
1975 and discus,sir.- the.enclosed report it was his opinion that our
sledge would be acceptable to the Henderson County landfill. fir. Jones
of Henderson County Health Department and Mr. Jim Moore of the N. C.
State Department of Health has worked extremely well with us on this
project and we appreciate their help tremendously.
Mr. Perkins, we are respectfully asking that you review the lab
analysis from" Crn,-mnonwealth as well as our past correspondences and
mail to Henderson County Department of Health and to Cranston Print
Works, Fletcher Division a short letter of comment. We are sure that
