C. 28732 Dear Mr. DeBruhl; In response to letters fron Cranston Print Works of August 8 and -- -11, 1975,---the following is submitted.` ---- - --- - - - In order to make a reasonable evaluation of the cake sludge from the Cranston Print Works plant for the purposes of determining acceptability or rejection at a sanitary landfill location, it . is necessary that a copy of tiie complete report of test made by Commonwealth laboratory, Greenville, be provided. Also since the. sludge at the Fletcher plant :rill be similar to the cake sludge at the Massachusetts plant after dewatering, a report of the analysis of the Massachusetts. plant cake sludge and a sample of that cake sludge is needed for evaluation. Information on the quantity o% sludge material to be disposed of on an annual basis is needed. Also information on the stability and solubility of the sludge after dewatering would be helpful. Upon receipt of the •adove, a determination of suitability or rejection for sanitary landfill.disposal can be made. Yours truly, Jerry C. James DeBruhl of our Fletcher Plant will send to you a sample of "cake sludge" for analysis and testing to determine suitability for disposal to landfill. Information is needed on "stability and solubility". There is presumably concern over the content of rain- water leachate from the sludge. Accordingly, will you please perform analyses on the following: 1, "Cake sludge" as received. (Approx. 10% solids, 90% crater) .. 2. Water solution expressed by filtration from the cake sludge. 3_ Distilled water extraction or leachate from the dried cake - after filtration step #2. Perhaps 10 to 100 times the dry solids weight would be proper for the water extraction. Test each of these three items for the following: Dry solids - or % water Volatile solids - or %ash based on dry solids Cadmium Calcium Chromium Copper Chloride Nitrogen - total Phosphorous Potassium Silica Sodium Sulfate Phenol Zinc TEXTILE PRINTERS AND FINISHERS Mr. Tabor, October 30, 1975, Page 2 Items $f2 and 43 should represent the total 'leachable material from the cake sludge, Item #1. To avoid confusion in interpret- ation, I would prefer to have the report contain the original analyses together with the procedural details such as amounts of dry sludge, amount of extraction water, etc. Please contact James DeBruhl at Fletcher, N.C. or me, at Cranston, R.I., if you have any questions. Very. truly yours,,? William F. Turner WFT:pcc cc: D. Martland R. Vieweg L.- Roge:rs R. Gaffney J. DeBruhl—"-' R. Phillips
