HOW WAS THE FIRE REPORTED AND BY WHOM:
@ 19:00:00 PM
It was reported to the Raleigh fir department by a person driving by the facility.
LIST ACTIONS TAKEN:
PERMIT # 9213-COMPOST-1991
the fire department arrived on site and monitored the spot until Solid Waste Service (SWS) staff arrived. When SWS staff arrived the area of material was pulled
rpart. Once the smoldering material was pulled apart it was compacted. After all smoldering material was put out and compacted all personnel left the site.
WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE:
Due to our temporary closure, all of our fresh grind pile was not placed into windrows. The pile was not compacted on one side because it is not common practice for
it to sit for long periods of time. The loose material increased in temperature and wind caused some surface material to smolder and smoke.
DESCRIBE AREA, TYPE, AND AMOUNT OF WASTE INVOLVED:
There was a few smoldering spots within a 20'x20' area on the side of the fresh yard waste grindings pile.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS FIRE:
The material could have been compacted on all sides.
DESCRIBE PLAN OF ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENTS:
If a pile will sit for longer than a week, it will be tracked in and compacted.
