Gordon Laljton Environmental Engineer Division_ of Health Services P.O. box 2091 Raleigh, North Carolina 27602 Dear Mr. Layton: Canton Mill Canton, North Carolina 28716 The Canton Mill has permanently closed down our chlorine manufacturing operation and plans are being made to dismantle the facility. We will have approximately two hundred cathodes from Hooker S-type cells for disposal. This is the same type of material which was buried in the Town of Canton landfill January 1984. You will recall that the cathodes are four feet by five feet by one foot, black iron construction with a copper band and an asbestos covered wire mesh diaphram. The breakdown of the cell will be handled wet. The cathodes will be wrapped in plastic and properly labeled prior to transport to the landfill. We are requesting permission to place these cathodes in Area "F" of No. 6 landfill, Permit No. 44-06, which has previously been approved for asbestos disposal. The cathodes will be covered immediately with non -asbestos containing material (lime mud, fly ash or soil). For your reference I am enclosing previous correspondence regarding cathodes and asbestos disposal. If you have any questions regarding this material please do not hesitate to call on me. We are looking forward to having this area of the mill "asbestos -free" and would like to expedite disposal. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
