Included in this report is a description of the field activities, the results obtained, and our conclusions and recommendations. On December 18, 2019, ECS was contracted to collect a field blank and a groundwater sample from water supply wells WSW-1 and WSW-2 for laboratory analyses. A summary of available water supply well information is provided in Table 1 and locations of previously identified water supply wells is depicted on Figure 3. Laboratory analysis reported methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE) concentration above its North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standard (NC2LGWQS) but below its Gross Contamination Level (GCL) in the groundwater sample collected from water supply well WSW-1. Laboratory analysis reported diisopropyl ether and 1,2-dichloroethane at a concentration above its laboratory reporting limit but below its NC2LGWQS in the groundwater sample collected from water supply well WSW-1. Laboratory analysis reported ethanol at an estimated concentration, denoted with a “J” flag above the laboratory reporting limit in the groundwater samples collected from water supply wells WSW-1, WSW-2, and the Field Blank. Ethanol was not analyzed during the previous groundwater sampling events. The field blank was collected using laboratory provided deionized water. ECS inquired with the laboratory to determine if the ethanol detections were accurate. The laboratory confirmed ethanol was reported with a J flag which indicates it is an estimated concentration reported below the reporting limit. Therefore, it is possible the detection of ethanol was introduced in the laboratory and/or in the field. Since only ethanol was reported in water supply well WSW-2 and the field blank, it is ECS’s opinion the ethanol detections is considered to be a laboratory contaminant. A summary of analytical results is provided in Table 2, and a copy of the laboratory analytical report as well as chain of custody is attached.
