The subject site is further identified by Chatham County GIS PIN 9678-71-1577. According to information provided by the NCDENR, the site is a residential property with no indications of a current/former gasoline retail facility. In 1992, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) encountered an abandoned underground storage tank (UST) and apparent petroleum-impacted soils during the installation of a fiber optic line. Since the UST was encountered adjacent to a 6-inch PVC water line, water samples were collected from the adjacent residences and analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX). Laboratory analysis of the water samples did not report BTEX concentrations above laboratory reporting limits. The UST was not removed by NCDOT at that time. In January 1993, one hand auger boring was advanced to a depth of six feet below the ground surface (ft bgs) between the UST and the Chatham County water line and soil samples were collected from depths of three and five ft bgs for laboratory analysis. Laboratory results of the soil sample (CMS-2) collected from five ft bgs interval reported total petroleum hydrocarbons gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) above the UST Section’s Action Level of 10 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). The report recommended the removal of the UST. As part of the January 1993 assessment, a second area of suspected contamination was identified. The abandoned country store (Dupree’s Grocery) had a fuel dispenser in front of the store and it was not known if a UST remained at this facility. Two additional soil borings were advanced to a depth of six ft bgs. Field observations of the soil samples collected from the two borings did not exhibit petroleum impact and therefore, soil samples were not submitted to the laboratory for analysis. In an effort to determine the existence of a gasoline station associated with the subject site, historical aerial photographs from 1955, 1960, and 1991 were reviewed. The aerial photographs depict the presence of two buildings on the property in 1955 and 1960, but only one building in the 1991 aerial photograph. In December 2009, a geophysical survey, consisting of an electromagnetic (EM) survey and a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey, was conducted near the suspected UST location and adjacent area. Two anomalies, indicative of USTs, were identified during the geophysical survey. In April 2010, one 15,000-gallon gasoline UST (UST-1) and two 550-gallon gasoline USTs (UST-2 and UST-3) were excavated and removed from the site. The fuel dispensing product lines and vent lines were also removed at this time. During closure activities, approximately 144.60 tons of petroleum-impacted soils were removed from the vicinity of UST-1. Following UST closure and soil excavation activities, confirmation soil samples were collected from the vicinity of the USTs (two samples each beneath UST-2 and UST-3, and four soil samples from the sidewalls of the UST-1 excavation). Laboratory analysis of soil sample UST-3B reported a TPH diesel range organics (TPH-DRO) concentration of 10.3 mg/kg, exceeding the UST Section’s Action Level of 10 mg/kg. Laboratory analysis of one of the four soil samples collected from the UST-1 excavation reported targeted constituents at concentrations that exceed their respective soil-to-groundwater maximum soil contaminant concentrations (MSCCs) but below their respective residential MSCCs. Groundwater Monitoring Report – Charles Berryman Property Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina NCDENR Incident: 15929 NCDENR Contract: N14007i-C December 16, 2014 2 In July 2011, a receptor survey was completed for the site. The receptor survey identified 22 water supply wells within 1,500 feet of the source area. Six of the 22 water supply wells (WSW- 5, WSW-8, WSW-9, WSW-10, WSW-19, and WSW-20) were determined to be used for potable purposes; three of the 22 water supply wells (WSW-11, WSW-15, and WSW-16) were determined to be used for non-potable purposes (irrigation); nine of the 22 water supply wells (WSW-2, WSW-3, WSW-4, WSW-6, WSW-12, WSW-13, WSW-14, WSW-17, WSW-18, WSW- 20, and WSW-21) were determined to be inactive; and, the status/use of one of the 22 water supply wells (WSW-1) could not be determined. Municipal water connections and fire hydrants were identified throughout the search radius of the survey area and Chatham County Public Works – Utilities and Water Division confirmed that municipal water is available to each property within 1,500 feet of the site. Between July 11 and 13, 2011, as part of a Limited Site Assessment (LSA), five groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-5) were installed and sampled at the site to assess groundwater quality. Soil samples were collected for laboratory analysis using risk-based parameters from the borings for monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2. Laboratory analysis of the soil samples reported targeted compounds at concentrations that exceed their respective laboratory reporting limits, but below their respective MSCCs. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from each monitoring well reported targeted petroleum-related compounds at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS, but below their respective GCLs. Groundwater was determined to be flowing to the south-southeast. The extent of groundwater impact exceeding NC2LGWQS has not been defined. SITE GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY As determined from the USGS Topographic Maps, Merry Oaks and Moncure, North Carolina Quadrangles dated 1993 (Figure 1), the site is at an approximate elevation of 210 feet above mean sea level. Surface runoff on the site is generally to the east. The subject site is situated in the Piedmont Physiographic Province. The soils encountered in this area are the residual product of in-place chemical weathering of rock presently underlying the site and/or historic depositional events. In general, shallow unconfined groundwater movement within the overlying soils is controlled largely by topographic gradients. However, as the groundwater percolates downward, it becomes controlled by the subsurface geologic conditions. Thus, the direction of groundwater movement in the deeper aquifers may not be consistent with the reflecting topography. In general, shallow unconfined groundwater movement within the overlying soils is controlled largely by topographic gradients. Recharge occurs primarily by infiltration along higher elevations and typically discharges into streams or other surface water bodies. The elevation of the shallow water table is transient and can vary greatly with seasonal fluctuations in precipitation. Movement of shallow groundwater is generally from higher to lower elevations. Groundwater Monitoring Report – Charles Berryman Property Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina NCDENR Incident: 15929 NCDENR Contract: N14007i-C December 16, 2014 3 Water Supply Wells Five previously identified water supply wells are located within 1,000 feet of the source area (Figure 6). Water supply well questionnaires were mailed via United States Postal Service (USPS) to the property owners of water supply wells WSW-1, WSW-3, WSW-5, WSW-8, and WSW-9 concerning the status of water supply wells on their property. ECS received written consent from Ms. Marietta Dixon and ECS received verbal consent from Mrs. Marilyn Berryman to collect groundwater samples from their water supply wells WSW-9 and WSW-5, respectively. Both WSW-9 and WSW-5 were inoperable and not in use during the time of our site visit. Ms. Berryman informed ECS that her residence utilizes the municipal water supply. ECS did not receive verbal or written consent from Mr. Kenneth Jefferies to collect a groundwater sample from water supply well WSW-8. Both WSW-1 and WSW-3, which are located on the Raymond Judd Heirs property, are not in use and inoperable. ECS collected a grab groundwater sample from WSW-1 using a bailer since the water supply well casing was exposed. The names and addresses of the property owners with water supply wells located within 1,000 feet of the site are included in Table 6. FIELD ACTIVITIES On November 7, 2014, ECS collected five groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1, through MW-5 (Figure 2). Additionally, ECS collected one groundwater sample from water supply well WSW-1 (Figure 6). Well construction and groundwater elevation details are provided in Table 2. Prior to monitoring well sampling activities, the static groundwater elevation was measured in each monitoring well. Well construction details and groundwater elevation data is summarized in Table 2 and shown on Figure 3. Based on the groundwater elevation data, groundwater at the site generally flows to the east. Purging and sampling were accomplished using a peristaltic pump and dedicated tubing. Immediately after collection, the groundwater samples were transferred into sample containers provided by the laboratory. ECS utilized a bailer to collect a grab groundwater sample from water supply well WSW-1. ECS collected the groundwater sample from WSW-1 and poured the groundwater into sample containers provided by the laboratory. The sample containers were labeled with ECS project number, sample identification, sample date and time, and requested analytical analysis. The containers were placed into protective packaging material and placed into a cooler with ice to maintain the samples at approximately 4 Celsius (C). The samples were submitted to Pace Analytical Services, Inc. located in Huntersville, North Carolina for chemical analysis for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using EPA Method 6200B. ECS maintained proper COC procedures throughout the sample collection and transportation process. Groundwater Monitoring Report – Charles Berryman Property Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina NCDENR Incident: 15929 NCDENR Contract: N14007i-C December 16, 2014 4 LABORATORY ANALYTICAL RESULTS Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-5 reported several targeted analytes at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS but did not exceed their respective GCLs. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-5 reported 1,2- dichloroethane at a concentration that exceeds its respective NC2LGWQS but did not exceed its respective GCL. The laboratory did not report targeted analytes at concentrations above the laboratory reporting limits in the groundwater sample collected from water supply well WSW-1. A summary of the laboratory analytical results is included in Table 3 and shown on Figures 4 and 5. A summary of historical groundwater analytical results is included in Table 4. The laboratory analytical data sheets and COCs are included in Appendix A. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of this Groundwater Sampling Event, ECS concludes the following:  Based on closure samples collected during excavation activities performed in 2010, it is likely that petroleum-impacted soils remain at the site;  Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-4 reported several targeted analytes at concentrations that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS but did not exceed their respective GCLs;  Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-5 reported 1,2-dichloroethane at a concentration that exceeds its respective NC2LGWQS but did not exceed its respective GCL; and  The laboratory did not report targeted analytes at concentrations above the laboratory reporting limits in the groundwater sample collected from water supply well WSW-1.
