Groundwater Monitoring Report – 5/10/2010 Incident No. 12610 Former Four Corners Store Page 1 Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina I. Introduction This report documents groundwater sampling activities performed by Terraine, Inc. (Terraine) in accordance with the North Carolina State Lead Contract Task Authorization number 13-NCSL09-010-2 authorized on November 30, 2009, by the North Carolina Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR). The former Four Corners Store is located at 6154 West Mount Drive in Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina (Figures 1 and 4, Appendix B). The area is locally known as Langley Crossroads. The site is currently used as an office for Claude’s Construction, Inc. Municipal water is not available to the area, and there are three water supply wells used for drinking within 500 feet of the source area. The surrounding area is primarily residential with some agricultural fields. According to the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Closure Report dated 1994, by ENSCI Engineering Group; the Groundwater Monitoring Report dated 2008 by Force Environmental Service Company; the Groundwater and Water Supply Well Sampling Event and GPR Survey dated 2005; and the Monitoring Well Installation, Groundwater and Water Supply Well Sampling Report dated 2006 by Schnabel Engineering South, the following is a brief site history: • Two 6,000-gallon USTs were closed by removal on March 12, 1994. A sheen was identified on the groundwater located on the south side of the excavation. Soil analytical results indicated concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons above state standards in the area of the former USTs, product lines, and dispensers. • Six monitoring wells were installed on site: MW-1, MW-1D, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and MW-5. • Three water supply wells were identified within 500 feet of the source area: WSW-1 (on site), WSW-2, and WSW-3 (Table 1, Appendix A, Figure 2). Municipal water was not available in the vicinity of the site. • Groundwater elevation data from the 2008 monitoring report indicate that groundwater flow is to the northeast (Figure 3). Information regarding this site was not available in the Registered UST Database maintained by NCDENR (http://www.wastenotnc.org/ust/database.html#RE). On July 1, 2009, Terraine performed a groundwater monitoring event on monitoring wells MW-1, MW-1D, MW-3, MW-4, and water supply wells WSW-2 and WSW-3. Groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-4 contained target contaminant concentrations above 15A NCAC 2L .0202 (2L) Standards. No target contaminants were detected in groundwater samples from monitoring well MW-1D and water supply wells WSW-2 and WSW-3. The following report documents groundwater sampling activities conducted by Terraine on February 23, 2010. Groundwater Monitoring Report – 5/10/2010 Incident No. 12610 Former Four Corners Store Page 2 Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina II. Groundwater Sampling and Results On February 23, 2010, Terraine personnel mobilized to the site to collect groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, MW-5, and MW-1D, and water supply wells WSW-1, WSW-2, and WSW-3 to evaluate current groundwater quality conditions. Monitoring well locations are shown in Figures 4 and 5. Monitoring well MW-5 was located inside a locked fence; despite multiple attempts to contact Claude’s Construction between July 2009 and February 2010, Claude’s Construction did not facilitate access to the fenced area. Prior to sampling, depth to water measurements were obtained from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-1D using a decontaminated oil-water interface probe; these measurements are provided in Table 2. Each monitoring well was purged using low flow methodology until field parameters (pH, conductivity, turbidity, and oxidation-reduction potential) stabilized. Groundwater purging and sampling logs are included in Appendix D. Following sampling, a Universal Remediation, Inc. PRP® well boom was installed in monitoring well MW-1. These well booms contain powdered beeswax, which stimulates indigenous microbes and promotes rapid biodegradation of petroleum contaminants in groundwater. Based on the topographic map (Figure 1) and historical groundwater elevation data (Figure 3), groundwater flow is inferred to be toward the northeast. Groundwater samples from water supply wells WSW-1 and WSW-3 were collected from spigots on the front of the respective houses. Water supply well WSW-1 supplies water to the house at 6164 West Mount Drive and Claude’s Construction at 6154 West Mount Drive. Water supply well WSW-2 could not be sampled because the electricity had been turned off to the house and well pump that week, according to the resident at 6232 West Mount Drive. Water supply wells were purged for 15 minutes prior to sampling. Groundwater samples obtained on February 23, 2010, were collected into laboratory prepared containers, placed immediately on ice, and submitted under proper chain of custody controls to the Pace Analytical Services, Inc. laboratory in Huntersville, North Carolina, for chemical analyses. Table 3 provides a summary of current and historical groundwater analytical results. Monitoring well locations and current analytical results are provided in Figure 5. NCDENR was notified about the contaminant concentrations detected in water supply well WSW-3 on April 21, 2010. Groundwater Monitoring Report – 5/10/2010 Incident No. 12610 Former Four Corners Store Page 3 Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina III. Conclusions and Recommendations A. Conclusions Terraine has performed a groundwater sampling event at the former Four Corners Store and, upon review of the assessment activities and results, concludes the following: • The groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 contained target contaminant concentrations above the 2L Standards. • The groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-3 contained methyl tert-butyl ether above the method detection limit but below the 2L Standard. Groundwater from water supply well WSW-3 contained lead above method detection limits but below 2L Standard, and bromomethane above method detection limit but below method reporting limit. According to the EPA website, bromomethane is commonly associated with fumigants and pesticides (http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/hlthef/methylbr.html). • No target contaminants were detected in groundwater samples collected from monitoring well MW-1D and water supply well WSW-1. • Monitoring well MW-5 was located within a locked fenced-in area that could not be accessed; therefore, a groundwater sample was not obtained from this well. B. Recommendations Terraine recommends the following: • Install a monitoring well to the south of monitoring well MW-1, as depicted in Figure 6, in an effort to delineate the contaminant plume to the south. • Gauge all wells in an effort to determine current groundwater flow direction. • Replace the well boom in monitoring well MW-1 in May 2010. • Conduct a groundwater monitoring event of on-site monitoring wells (if full access can be obtained), and water supply wells WSW-1, WSW-2, and WSW-3. The next monitoring event is proposed for August 2010. Groundwater Monitoring Report – 5/10/2010 Incident No. 12610 Former Four Corners Store Page 4 Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina IV.
