Groundwater Incident Number: 40772
WR Project Number: 02141214.31
Dear Mr. Ryals:
WithersRavenel, Inc. (WR) has prepared this Letter Report documenting the verification of water
line connections and sampling two water supply wells recently installed in proximity to the Former
Lois Shinn site situated at 5475 NC Highway 152 West in China Grove, Rowan County, North
Carolina. Activities described herein were authorized on October 17, 2019 and performed under
task authorization (TA) 06 for the site, in association with NCDEQ Contract # N17005.
Verification of Water Line Connections
WithersRavenel mobilized to the subject site on December 6, 2019 for the purposes of verifying
the connection of the newly installed McNeely and Roberts supply wells to the residences serviced
by these wells, followed by the collection of samples from each well for laboratory testing.
The first of the two wells was installed between September 24 and 25, 2019 situated on the
property of Carl & Beth Anne Roberts, located at 5390 W NC 152 in China Grove, NC. This well,
designated by WR as “Roberts 3” or “WSW‐5C” was installed as a replacement for a supply well
located on the property with documented petroleum contamination at concentrations exceeding
NC 2L and/or US EPA MCLs. WR verified connection of this well to the residence through the
physical observation of the supply line to the wellhead. Connection of the residence to the supply
well was accomplished through the installation of ½‐inch diameter (dia.) cross‐linked polyethylene
(PEX) tubing running from the wellhead to a central connection point located beneath the
residence. The PEX tubing is run through a 1‐inch dia. trace pipe, buried approximately 18‐inches
beneath surface grade. Photographs of the supply line connections are included as an attachment.

The second of the wells installed is situated on the property of Bryan & Ashlyn McNeely at 5145
W NC 152 in China Grove, NC. This well, designated by WR as “McNeely 2” or “WSW‐2A” was
installed as a replacement for the supply well located on the property with petroleum
contaminants exceeding NC 2L Standards for which a point‐of‐entry (POE) system has been
operating. WR verified connection of this well to the residence through the physical observation
of the supply line to the wellhead. Connection of the residence to the supply well was
accomplished through the installation of ½‐inch dia. PEX tubing running from the wellhead to the
line formerly connecting the residence to the effluent side of the POE system on the property
(within the well house associated with the now out‐of‐use supply well on the property). The PEX
tubing is run through a 1‐inch dia. trace pipe, buried approximately 18‐inches beneath surface
grade. Photographs of the supply line connections are included as an attachment.
WR also sampled each of these wells on December 6, 2019, however, the samples were mis‐placed
or lost by the laboratory after they had been relinquished to the lab’s courier service and not
analyzed. As a result, WR returned to the locations on December 31, 2019, and re‐sampled the
wells as described below.
Water Supply Well Sampling
WR personnel returned to the site on December 31, 2019 for the purposes of obtaining supply
well samples from the McNeely and Roberts supply wells. Prior to the collection of the samples,
each well was purged a minimum of ten‐minutes by opening the sample port located at each
wellhead forcing the well pump(s) to run continuously. After such time as purging of each well
had been completed, WR personnel obtained samples from the wells for testing by Standard
Method (SM) 6200B. Samples were collected in laboratory grade glassware containing chemical
preservative. Following collection, samples were placed in a cooler containing ice and relinquished
to Waypoint Analytical Services, Inc. (Waypoint), formerly Prism Laboratories, Inc for shipment to
their laboratory in Charlotte, NC and eventual analysis.
Laboratory Results
WSW‐2A (McNeely 2)
Laboratory results for the sample obtained from the newly installed well on the McNeely property
(WSW‐2A or “McNeely 2”) did not indicate the presence of targeted compounds at concentrations
above the laboratory method detection limit for SM6200B.

January 2020 Page 3 of 4
WSW‐5C (Roberts 3)
Laboratory results for the sample obtained from the newly installed well on the Roberts property
(WSW‐5C or “Roberts 3”) indicated the presence of the following targeted compounds:
Compound
Name Level Detected (µg/L) NC 2L Standard (µg/L) GCL (µg/L) US EPA MCL
Acetone 28 6,000 6,000,000 Not
Established
Methyl‐Ethyl‐
Ketone (MEK) 27 4,000 4,000,000 Not
Established
Chloroform 5.9 70 70,000 Not
Established
Toluene 22 600 258,000 1,000
The presence of acetone in the sample is considered by WR to be a laboratory artifact or cross
contaminant associated with laboratory cleaning agents. The presence of MEK, chloroform and
toluene in the sample are thought to be a remnant of the PVC solvent utilized in the emplacement
of the well casing and emplacement of the delivery line connection. It is expected these
compounds will be eliminated over time through evaporation of the solvents and future pumping
of the well.
In the case of all compounds reported in the sample, none was reported at a concentration above
NC 2L Standards or US EPA Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs).
Laboratory reports for each of the samples obtained from WSW‐2A and WSW‐5C are included as
an attachment.
WR recommends the collection of samples from each well on a quarterly basis over the next
year.
WithersRavenel appreciates the opportunity to be of service to the Federal & State Lead Program.
