B. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1. Summary of Activities Associated with Current TA
WithersRavenel, Inc. (WR) gauged, purged and sampled groundwater monitoring wells MW‐1,
MW‐2, MW‐3, MW‐4R, MW‐5, MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐8, MW‐9R, MW‐13, TW‐1R and TW‐2.
WR was originally tasked with the additional collection of a groundwater samples from MW‐14R
and TW‐3, however, neither of these wells were located by WR personnel, and were, therefore,
not sampled.
2. Soil, Groundwater and Free Product Assessment Information
Soils
No soil samples were obtained by WR in association with this task authorization. Results for soil
samples collected during previous assessment activities at the site relating to USTs closed at the
location during May 1990 have shown levels of gasoline range organics (GRO) and diesel range
organics (DRO) as total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) at concentrations exceeding the minimum
Reportable Concentration (RC) or NCDEQ Action Levels in place at the times of sample
collection. Laboratory results for soil samples collected in association with UST closures
completed in March 2019 did not show levels of TOH at concentrations exceeding the NCDEQ
Action Levels.
Groundwater
Analytical data for groundwater samples obtained from site monitoring wells in December 2019
showed one or more targeted compounds at levels exceeding their respective 2L Standards in
MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐3, MW‐4, MW‐7, MW‐9R and TW‐2. Levels of n‐propylbenzene (MW‐2,
MW‐3) and naphthalene, 1,2,4‐trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5‐trimethylbenzene and total xylenes
(MW‐3) were reported at concentrations in excess of their respective Gross Contaminant Levels
(GCLs). Levels of one or more compounds reported in samples from MW‐2 and MW‐3 were
shown at concentrations to be 10‐times their respective NC 2B Surface Water Standards.
Apparent contaminant increases in MW‐3 may relate to possible increased groundwater
movement following the removal of UST systems to the north of the source area in March 2019.
Based on current groundwater data for wells sampled during December 2019, the extent of
groundwater contamination at the facility has not been defined to levels equivalent to the 2L
Standards to the East of MW‐7. In addition, previous data for MW‐14R (North of MW‐7) have
shown levels of select compounds at levels above 2L Standards.
Free Product
Free product has been documented by previous consultants in monitoring wellsMW‐1, MW‐3,
MW‐7 and MW‐9. No free product was measured in any monitoring wells during the December
2019 sampling event, however, a representative of Waypoint Analytical Services (Waypoint), the
laboratory which analyzed groundwater samples collected during December 2019 stated that
there was a petroleum sheen on the samples collected from MW‐3.

3. Receptor Information
WR did not perform a receptor update in association with the current task authorization for the
site. According to historical reports, several supply wells were identified within 1,500‐ft of the
site, however, following the installation of a municipal water supply system to the site and
surrounding properties, no potable water supply wells are known to exist within 1,000 feet of
the source area. Additionally, there are no irrigation wells located within 250 feet of the source
area. Three surface water bodies are located within 1,000 feet of the source area. The closest
surface water body is an unnamed tributary to Prince Mill Creek located approximately 150 feet
north of the source area. Price Mill Creek is located approximately 850 feet northeast of the
source area. The third is a pond located approximately 900 feet south‐southeast of the source
area.
4. Remediation Activities
Remedial activities performed at the site, to date, have included the following:
December 2007: An Aggressive Fluid Vapor Recovery (AVFR) event was conducted on
groundwater monitoring wells MW‐3 MW‐9 and MW‐7. During the event, 934 gallons of
fluid, and 17 gallons of free product was recovered.
February 2012: 326.20 tons of impacted soil was removed from the former dispenser island
area and the former UST basin and disposed offsite at a NC permitted facility.
August 2013: An AFVR event was completed on the subject site and on groundwater
monitoring wells MW‐2, MW‐7, MW‐9R and TW‐2. A total of 2,529 gallons of liquid and 14
gallons of free product were removed from the aquifer.
March 2019: Four petroleum USTs were permanently closed through removal. Results for
soil samples collected at the time of these closures did not show evidence of a release or
releases from these systems.
5. Recommendations
Based on the results of assessment and monitoring activities conducted at the site in association
with this TA, WR recommends the following:
Resampling of MW‐2 and MW‐3 to verify GCL exceedances.
If concentrations confirmed, removal of impacted soils in the areas of MW‐2 and MW‐3 to
address GCL exceedances.

C. SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
WR completed groundwater sampling activities at the facility on December 9, 2019. The
following information summarizes the site history and characterization.
1 UST Information
UST Systems Closed in 1990
The approximate location of the former underground storage tank (UST) systems removed from
the site in 1990 are is depicted on Figure 2. The former UST system consisted of four USTs; (1)
8,000‐gallon UST, (2) 1,000‐gallon gasoline USTs, (1) 550‐gallon kerosene UST, which were
removed from the site in 1990.
UST Systems Closed in March 2019
Following closure of the UST systems on the property in 1990, four additional tanks, including
(1) 8,000 gallon, (1) 4,000 gallon, (1) 3,000‐gallon gasoline USTs, and (2) 2,000‐gallon USTs used
to store diesel and kerosene. These tanks were closed though removal in March 2019. Table B‐
1 includes information regarding the USTs formerly located on the property.
2. Description of Release/General Assessment History
The following summary of the assessment history is based on WR’s review of historical files for
the subject incident:
April 1990: four USTs (1) 2,000‐gallon and (2) 1,000‐gallon gasoline USTs and (1) 550‐
gallon kerosene UST were removed from the site.
(Between) 1990 and 2004: five USTs were installed on the property which included; (1)
8,000 gallon, (1) 4,000 gallon, (1) 3,000‐gallon gasoline USTs, and (2) 2,000‐gallon USTs
used to store diesel and kerosene.
May 2004: Monitoring wells MD W‐1, MW‐2, MW‐3 are installed. Soil samples were
collected from well boreholes MW‐1, MW‐2, and MW‐3 and submitted to a laboratory
for analysis of VOCs by EPA Method 8260, SVOCs by EPA Method 8270, and MADEP
VPH and EPH. Analytical results for the soil samples collected did not identify targeted
compounds at concentrations exceeding Soil‐to‐Water MSCCs. Groundwater monitoring
well MW‐3 contained 0.01 feet of free product. Groundwater samples were collected
from MW‐1 and MW‐2 and submitted to a laboratory for analysis of VOCs by EPA
Method 602, EDB by EPA Method 504.1, total lead by Standard Method (SM) 6010, and
MADEP VPH and EPH. Analytical results for MW‐1 and MW‐2 identified one or more
analytes at concentrations exceeding their respective 2L Groundwater Standard.
February 2005: 26 soil samples were collected from 21 soil borings that were advanced
proximal to the current UST basin. The soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) gasoline range organics (GRO) and diesel range organics (DRO).
Analytical results for the one or more soil samples collected identified TPH GRO or DRO
at concentrations exceeding the NC Action Levels in place at the time of the assessment.
July 2005: Soil and groundwater assessment activities were conducted onsite which
included the advancement of one soil boring and four groundwater monitoring wells.
Three Type II groundwater monitoring wells (MW‐4 through MW‐6) and one Type III
groundwater monitoring well (TW‐1) were installed onsite. Groundwater samples were
collected from each groundwater monitoring well (MW‐1 through MW‐6 and TW‐1) and

submitted to a laboratory for analysis of VOCs by EPA Method 602, EDB by EPA Method
504.1, total lead by SM6010, and MADEP VPH and EPH. Analytical results for
groundwater samples collected in MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐6 and TW‐1 identified one or
more analytes at concentrations exceeding their respective 2L Groundwater Standards.
Three soil samples were collected from two soil borings (MW‐6 and SS‐22 at the five‐
and ten‐foot intervals) and submitted to a laboratory for analysis of VOCs by EPA
Method 8260, SVOCs by EPA Method 8270, MADEP VPH and EPH. Analytical results
for the three soil samples did not identify targeted compounds exceeding the Soil‐to
Water MSCCs.
December 2007: An Aggressive Fluid Vapor Recovery (AVFR) event was conducted on
MW‐3, MW‐9 and MW‐7. During the event, 934 gallons of fluid, and 17 gallons of free
product was recovered.
May 2011: Residential homes located at 6608 and 6711 Weddington Road were
connected to municipal water and their water supply wells were abandoned, thus, no
potable water supply wells are present with 1,000 feet of the source area.
February 2012: 326.20 tons of impacted soil was removed from the former dispenser
island area and the former UST basin and disposed offsite at a NC permitted facility.
August 2013: an AFVR event was completed at the site during which a vacuum was
pulled on groundwater monitoring wells MW‐2, MW‐7, MW‐9R and TW‐2. A total of
2,529 gallons of liquid and 14 gallons of free product were removed from the aquifer.
May 2014: a groundwater sampling event was conducted which included the sampling all
existing groundwater monitoring wells (Type II monitoring wells MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐4,
MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐9R, MW‐12, and MW‐13, Type III monitoring wells TW‐2 and TW‐
3). In addition, a surface water sample (SW‐2) was collected from the unnamed tributary
to Prince Mill Creek which is located ~150 feet northwest of the source area. Analytical
results for groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐4
MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐9R, MW‐12, MW‐13, TW‐2 and TW‐3 identified one or more
petroleum related compounds at concentrations exceeding the 2L Groundwater
Standards. Analytical results for the water sample collected from the unnamed tributary
to Prince Mill Creek did not identify any targeted compounds at a concentration
exceeding their respective laboratory detection limits, with the exception of MTBE.
February 2018: a groundwater sampling event was conducted on 15 groundwater
monitoring wells MW‐1 through MW‐8, MW‐9R, MW‐12, MW‐13, MW‐14R, TW‐1R,
TW‐2, and TW‐3. Analytical data for groundwater samples collected in shallow wells
MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐3, MW‐4, MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐9R, MW‐14R, and deep wells TW‐2
and TW‐3 identified one or more petroleum related compound at concentrations
exceeding their respective 2L Standards.
March 2019: WR Oversaw the excavation and removal of three gasoline USTs of 8,000,
4,000 and 3,000‐gal. capacities, one diesel fuel UST of 2,000‐gal. capacity and one
kerosene UST of 2,000‐gal. capacity. Laboratory results for soil samples collected in
association with these UST closures did not show levels of TOH at concentrations
exceeding the NCDEQ Action Levels.
3. Brief Description of Site Characteristics
The property is located in a residential and commercial area of Wesley Chapel, Union County,
North Carolina (Figure 1). The property address associated with the Incident is 6709
Weddington Road. The property includes a single‐story commercial building of block
construction located on the southwestern portion of the property and a residential house

located in the southeastern corner of the property (Figure 2). The building on site is surrounded
by concrete and asphalt pavement and areas of grass and dirt. The Union County parcel
identification number for the property is 06045016E01. The Union County Tax Department
indicates that the property is currently owned by Ammons Investments, LLC.
According to the 1985 Geologic Map of North Carolina, the site is located in the Carolina Slate
Belt of the Piedmont Physiographic Province. Subsurface lithology in the region consists of Late
Proterozoic age weakly metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The metamorphic rocks
beneath the site and surrounding area primarily include phyllite, a fine‐grained sericitic rock with
pervasive cleavage and a silky luster. The phyllite, and tuffaceous interbeds within it are believed
to be strongly sheared, recrystallized beds of the Tillery or Cid Formations which are comprised
of argillite, mudstone, siltstone, and ryolitic and ryodacitic tuffs.
The undisturbed soils encountered in this area are the residual product of in‐place chemical
weathering of rock which was similar to the rock presently underlying the site. In areas not
altered by erosion or disturbed by the activities of man, the typical residual soil profile consists of
near surface clayey soils and underlying sandy silts and silty sands. The boundary between soil
and rock is typically gradational. A transitional zone termed "partially weathered rock" is normally
found overlying the parent bedrock.
Examination of the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5‐minute series topographic maps of Matthews and
Waxhaw, North Carolina Quadrangles, the site is located approximately 590 feet above mean
sea level with a topographic relief to the north, towards an unnamed tributary to Prince Mill
Creek (Figure 1).
4. Information on Receptors/Potential Receptors
WR did not perform a receptor update in association with the current task authorization for the
site. According to the Phase II Limited Site Assessment (LSA) completed by CBM Environmental
Services in August 2005, several supply wells were present within the radius for their receptor
survey, however, each of the supply wells located within 1,000‐ft of the site have since been
abandoned, following the installation of a municipal water line. Presently, there are no potable
water supply wells within 1,000 feet of the source area. Additionally, there are no irrigation wells
located within 250 feet of the source area.
Three surface water bodies are located within 1,000 feet of the source area. The closest surface
water body is an unnamed tributary to Prince Mill Creek located approximately ~150 feet north
of the source area. Price Mill Creek is located approximately 850 feet northeast of the source
area. The third is a pond located approximately 900 feet south‐southeast of the source area.
Information pertaining to the surface water bodies within 1,000 feet of the source area are
summarized in Table B‐5B. Each of these features drain to the Catawba River Basin.

D. PRESENTATION OF CURRENT/COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT
INFORMATION
On December 9, 2019, WR personnel mobilized to the subject site to perform assessment and
sampling activities in accordance with task authorization TA‐04 for the facility. WR personnel
gauged, purged and sampled groundwater monitoring wells MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐3, MW‐4R,
MW‐5, MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐8, MW‐9R, MW‐13, TW‐1R and TW‐2. WR was originally tasked
with the additional collection of a groundwater samples from MW‐14R and TW‐3, however,
neither of these wells were located by WR personnel, and were, therefore, not sampled.
1 Groundwater Elevations
Prior to the purging and sampling of site monitoring wells, WR personnel opened and gauged
monitoring wells with an electronic water level indicator to determine the depth to groundwater
at each well location. Groundwater elevations measured within the wells on December 9, 2019
ranged from 12.69‐ft beneath the wells top‐of‐casing (BTOC) in MW‐13 to 15.17‐ft BTOC in
TW‐2. Groundwater elevations were utilized to generate a two‐dimensional representation of
the groundwater table at the site based on the December 2019 measurement of groundwater
levels (Figure 3). Groundwater elevation data indicates that groundwater flows to the north,
with a westerly component on the northeastern portion of the site. Groundwater elevations as
measured during December 2019 and well construction information are summarized in Table B‐
7. Historical groundwater elevation and free product level measurements are included in Table
B‐9.
2 Groundwater Sampling and Analytical Results
Monitoring Well Sampling
WR personnel obtained groundwater samples from MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐3, MW‐4R, MW‐5,
MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐8, MW‐9R, MW‐13, TW‐1R and TW‐2 following gauging and purging.
Following the gauging of the wells and prior to sampling each of the wells were purged of a
minimum of three volumes of groundwater through the use of separate, disposable bailers, as
described in the procedures outlined in Appendix D.
Samples were collected from each well following purging and recovery of groundwater and
decanted directly from the dedicated bailers into laboratory prepared sample containers holding
appropriate preservative(s) as required. The containers were labeled with appropriate
information and the groundwater samples were transported in an ice‐chilled cooler under proper
chain‐of‐custody to Waypoint located in Charlotte, NC for analysis by SM6200B. Copies of field
notes associated with monitoring activities are included in Appendix A.

Analytical Results
Analytical data for groundwater samples obtained from site monitoring wells in December 2019
showed the following:
One or more targeted compounds at levels exceeding their respective 2L Standards in MW‐
1, MW‐2, MW‐3, MW‐4, MW‐7, MW‐9R and TW‐2.
Levels of n‐propylbenzene (MW‐2, MW‐3) and naphthalene, 1,2,4‐trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5‐
trimethylbenzene and total xylenes (MW‐3) were reported at concentrations in excess of
their respective GCLs.
Levels of one or more compounds reported in samples from MW‐2 and MW‐3 were shown
at concentrations to be 10‐times their respective NC 2B Surface Water Standards.
Groundwater analytical results are summarized in Table B‐4 and included on Figure 4. Figure 5
illustrates isoconcentration contours for benzene, while Figure 6 shows naphthalene
concentrations in groundwater. The laboratory analytical report and chain‐of‐custody record are
included in Appendix A.

E. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This report documents the results of field activities conducted at the site in December 9, 2019
including gauging, purging and sampling groundwater monitoring wells MW‐1, MW‐2, MW‐3,
MW‐4R, MW‐5, MW‐6, MW‐7, MW‐8, MW‐9R, MW‐13, TW‐1R and TW‐2. Conclusions based
on completion of the site groundwater assessment activities include the following:
The property is currently unoccupied and out‐of‐service.
The subject property and surrounding properties have access to and are reportedly serviced
by a municipal water supply system.
Current data suggests that groundwater flow is to the north in the central portion of the site,
with a northwesterly trend indicated near the northeastern part of the property.
No free product was measured in any monitoring wells gauged in December 2019.
Based on concentrations of compounds exceeding GCLs and NC 2B Surface Water
Standards, site risk remains High.
Based on the results of assessment activities conducted at the site in association with the
current TA, WR recommends the following:
Resampling of MW‐2 and MW‐3 to verify GCL exceedances.
If concentrations confirmed, removal of impacted soils in the areas of MW‐2 and MW‐3 to
address GCL exceedances.

GENERAL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

Soil Sampling, Soil Boring and Monitor Well Installation, Well Development
Soil borings are installed utilizing a stainless-steel hand auger, direct-push hydraulic drill or auger rotary
drill using either a macro core™ sampler, hollow stem augers, or air rotary roller cone bit. Soil borings are
typically sampled at discrete intervals from the bucket of a clean stainless steel hand auger, direct push
stainless steel sampler with acetate sleeve, or a split barrel sampler. When appropriate, soil samples may
be collected from drill cuttings associated with the boring or well installation.
Monitor wells are constructed within select soil borings of one, two, or four-inch inside diameter PVC
casing and machine slotted screen in accordance with NCAC Title 15A, Subchapter 02C (Well
Construction Standards, Criteria and Standards Applicable to Water Supply and Certain Other Wells).
Clean-washed “#2 Torpedo Sand” is typically utilized to fill the boring annulus surrounding the well
screen, extending to a minimum of 1-foot above the well screen. A minimum 1-foot thick bentonite clay
seal is emplaced above the sand pack and hydrated. Neat cement grout is placed in the remaining annulus
space from the upper portion of the bentonite seal to within 1-foot of surface grade. In coastal plain areas
where shallow groundwater is encountered, a variance to construction standards may be employed to
ensure the upper portion of the well screen intersects the upper aquifer surface. Wellheads may be
completed with either concrete-set flush mounted traffic-bearing steel skirted manholes with bolt down
covers or steel above-ground “stick-up” well protectors set in a concrete pad. The monitoring wells are
secured with locking caps. Temporary wells or piezometers may be completed with the PVC riser cut at
or above grade, and are abandoned within 24-hours of their installation.
Wells may be developed using a bailer, electric submersible pump, pneumatic pump, or peristaltic pump,
dependent upon site conditions. When wells are developed by the driller, they may be developed with
any of the methods outlined above, in addition to air or water injection. Soil boring logs and well
construction details are typically prepared for presentation in a report appendix. Borings completed in
bedrock may be drilled using air rotary, coring, or sonic drilling methods.
Groundwater Depth to Water Measurements
Groundwater level measurements are typically obtained using an electronic water level indicator which
registers a tone and/or illuminated light when the probe contacts groundwater. Depth to groundwater
measurements are obtained by lowering the probe attached to a cable usually marked in 0.01 foot
intervals into the well until the probe of the meter intersects the water surface. The measurement from
the top of the riser pipe or top of casing (TOC) to the water level is recorded to the nearest 0.01 foot. The
electronic water level indicator probe and exposed probe cable is decontaminated between measurement
locations.
Generalized Standard Operating Procedures (Not All Inclusive)

Our People. Your Success.
Free Product Level Measurements
Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) or “free product” present on the water table is measured using
an electronic oil/water interface probe. The interface probe has both an audible and illuminating light
that indicate when a liquid level is encountered. The oil/water interface probe registers a solid tone and
solidly lit light when LNAPL petroleum product is encountered and a beeping tone flashing light when
groundwater is encountered. Depth to LNAPL measurements are obtained by lowering the probe
attached to a cable marked in 0.01 foot intervals into the well until the probe of the meter intersects the
product or groundwater. The measurements from the top of the riser pipe or TOC to the liquid level are
recorded to the nearest 0.01 foot. The thickness of LNAPL is calculated by subtracting the depth to
LNAPL measurement from the depth to groundwater measurement. The electronic interface probe is
decontaminated between measurement locations.
Soil Sampling and Field Screening
Soil sampling is performed in general accordance with ASTM: 1586-84 where applicable. Sampling
procedures are followed to protect the chemical integrity of the soil samples and minimize the potential
for cross contamination between sample locations, including discarding of the exterior of the sample
which contacts the auger bucket, acetate sleeve, or split barrel sampler, the use of stainless steel sampling
equipment, and the thorough decontamination of sampling apparatus prior to use and between sample
locations.
Soil samples retained as a part of excavation or other intrusive “digging” activities may be collected from
the bucket of excavation equipment or using a hand shovel, if appropriate. Care to collect soil samples
from excavation equipment includes retrieving native soil from material that has not made contact with
the excavating equipment. Samples are collected in sealable bags or by directly filling sample containers
as described above.
Sampling is performed using new, disposable nitrile gloves for each sample location to ensure sample
integrity and minimize the potential for cross contamination or field personnel exposure to contaminants.
Sampling equipment such as hand auger extensions and buckets, direct push samplers, split spoons or
shovels, are decontaminated prior to their use in the collection of samples.
Samples are placed within laboratory grade sample containers provided by the laboratory to which the
samples are submitted, labeled, sealed, and placed in an ice filled cooler. An aliquot of the sample is
typically placed in a clean sealable bag and allowed to reach ambient air temperature for future screening
of volatile vapor content with a photoionization detector (PID), flame-ionization detector (FID) or other
portable screening device.
Screening of samples with a PID, FID or other field screening device is performed in accordance with
device manufacturer specifications for screening, following calibration of the instrument based on
manufacturer recommended procedures.

Our People. Your Success.
Groundwater Sampling
Groundwater samples are generally collected using one of three standard methods – through the use of a
dedicated, disposable bailer, a peristaltic pump or submersible electric pump.
When sampling with a bailer, a minimum of three well volumes of groundwater are extracted from the
well as a means of purging, unless the well is purged to a “dry” state prior to the removal of three volumes
of water. Prior to collection of the groundwater sample with the bailer, the water level is allowed to
recover to within 80% of the original level measured prior to purging.
When sampling with a peristaltic or submersible electric pump, polyethylene (PE) tubing (or equivalent) is
emplaced into the screened section of the monitoring well, and the pump is used to extract water through
the tubing. When using the either of these methods, general water quality measurements including but
not limited to pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), oxygen reductive potential (ORP), specific
conductivity and turbidity may be used as methods for determining when an adequate purge of the well
has been conducted. When water quality parameters are measured, the resulting data are included in
well purge forms or field notes specific to each site and sampling point.
Following the purging of three well volumes of groundwater (in the case of the bailed well) or stability of
monitored measurements (in the case of the peristaltic or submersible electric pump), the groundwater
sample(s) are introduced directly into sample containers provided by the laboratory to which samples are
ultimately submitted for analysis. Any samples requiring chemical preservation are contained in pre-
preserved container(s) provided by the laboratory.
Sampling is performed using new, disposable nitrile gloves for each sample location to ensure sample
integrity and minimize the potential for cross contamination of samples or field personnel exposure to
contaminants.
Water Supply Well Sampling
Sampling of water supply wells is accomplished through the collection of a representative sample from an
in-line water tap or other point accessible for sampling. Where possible, the sample is collected from a
point prior to any filtration or point of entry (POE) system which might be installed on a well. In some
cases, samples will be collected from both pre and post-POE locations. Prior to the collection of samples
through an in-place sampling point, the tap or sampling port is cleaned with an Alconox® and deionized
water solution, rinsed with deionized water, and again with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) rinse.
In the case of active supply wells (e.g., a well with a useable well pump with an active power supply), the
well pump is energized and allowed to run for a minimum of ten (10) minutes time, after which a sample is
contained in laboratory grade sample containers as described in the previous section. Water quality
parameters may be (but are not necessarily) measured in association with the well purging.
Supply wells without active power supplies are not generally sampled, as the well seal cannot be
compromised by individuals not certified as a well contractor. However, in the case of a well with no
power supply or pump installed, samples could be obtained through the use of a bailer, peristaltic pump or
electric submersible pump.

Decontamination Procedures
Decontamination procedures employed in the performance of field activities will vary dependent upon
the method(s) of sampling performed at any site, but will generally include the following:
• Remove excess soil/sludge from any sampling equipment as needed,
• Wash and scrub the equipment with a phosphate-free detergent such as Alconox® or Liquinox® in a
contaminant-free tap water solution. Use a brush to remove particulate matter and surface films as
necessary,
• Rinse thoroughly with tap water,
• Rinse thoroughly with analyte-free water (deionized water),
Rinse thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol,
• Allow the equipment to air dry,
• Prevent inadvertent contamination during storage and transport (accomplished through storage of
equipment in foil or plastic bags/sheeting).
In the case of disposable bailers and tubing utilized for the purging and sampling of wells, these items may
be decontaminated prior to their disposal. In general, no decontamination of these items is necessary
prior to their use in sampling.
