2.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
The site is located at 100 West Main Street, Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina (Figures
1 and 2). The site was formerly a Texaco gas station. Photographs of the site are included in Appendix A. Based on information provided to ECS, two 4,000-gallon gasoline and one 2,000-gallon gasoline
USTs were removed from the site in June 2002. Two 1,000-gallon USTs were closed in place at the site in June 2002. A 550-gallon heating oil UST was still in service at the site in 2008 and a waste oil UST of unknown size was also still in service at that time; however, both were closed in
place in July 2019. Soil contamination was discovered upon removal of the three gasoline USTs with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) detected in the soil samples from 1.0 mg/kg to 9,660 mg/kg. Approximately
83 tons of contaminated soil was excavated from the tank basin and disposed of off-site. A receptor survey was conducted in June 2003. No water supply wells were identified within
1,000 feet of the source area during the receptor survey and municipal water was noted to be provided to each property within 1,000 feet of the source area. In 2008, a monitoring well was installed onsite and multiple petroleum hydrocarbons were
detected in the groundwater sample collected from the monitoring well above their respective Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs). In 2009, two aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) events were conducted on monitoring well MW-1. ECS sampled monitoring well MW-1 in January 2019 and detected multiple petroleum
hydrocarbons above their respective North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (NC2LGWQS).
On August 6, 2019, ECS observed the in-place closure of the one 550-gallon heating oil UST and
one waste oil UST of unknown size.
As determined from the USGS Topographic Map, Wilkesboro, North Carolina Quadrangle
(Figure 1), the site is at an approximate elevation of 1,040 feet above mean sea level. The
Yadkin River is located approximately 1,500 feet north of the site and Club Creek is located
approximately 1,500 feet south-southeast of the site. Surface runoff on the site is generally to the north-northwest.
According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina (1981), the subject site is situated in the Piedmont Physiographic Province. The soils encountered in this area are the residual product of in-place chemical weathering of rock presently underlying the site. In general, shallow unconfined groundwater movement within the overlying soils is controlled largely by topographic gradients.
However, as the groundwater percolates downward to the bedrock, it becomes controlled by the orientation of the rock fracture systems. Thus, the direction of groundwater movement may not be consistent with the reflecting topography. Recharge occurs primarily by infiltration along higher
elevations and typically discharges into streams or other surface water bodies. The elevation of

the shallow water table is transient and can vary with seasonal fluctuations in precipitation. Movement of groundwater under water table conditions is generally from higher to lower elevations. As such, shallow groundwater would be expected to flow to the north-northwest
beneath the site. 3.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES 3.1 Groundwater Flow Measurements On November 14, 2019, ECS measured the static water level in MW-1 using a decontaminated electronic water level meter. The depth to water was measured at 38.61 feet below top of casing (ft btoc). The well construction information and static water level measurement can be found on Table 1.
3.2 Monitoring Well Sampling
On November 14, 2019, ECS personnel collected a groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-
1. The location of the monitoring well is shown on Figure 2. Prior to sampling, the well was purged using a new disposable polyethylene bailer and new length of nylon cord. The well was developed/purged by evacuating a minimum of three well volumes using the bailer and cord. The well was developed/purged to remove sand, silt, and other fine sediments and to promote
communication between the surrounding formation and the sand pack surrounding the well’s screened interval. After purging was completed, the sample was placed into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the
samples at approximately four degrees Celsius. The sample containers were then submitted to Con-Test Analytical Laboratory in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts to be analyzed for volatile organic compounds using Standard Method 6200B. A Chain of Custody Record was maintained and is included in Appendix B. 3.3 Receptor Survey Update
Following collection of the groundwater sample on November 14, 2019, ECS conducted a receptor survey update within 1,000 feet of the source area. No water supply wells were identified within 1,000 feet of the source area. In addition, municipal water is available to each property within 1,000 feet of the source area.
3.4 Groundwater Analytical Results Review of the laboratory analytical results of the sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 identified several compounds at concentrations greater than their respective NCLGWQS but
below their respective Gross Contaminant Level (GCL). Additional compounds were identified at concentrations greater than the laboratory method detection limits, but less than their respective NC2LGWQS. A copy of the laboratory analytical report and COC are included in Appendix B.

4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Compound concentrations identified in the sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 in November 2019 increased as compared to those identified in the sample collected in January 2019. The increase in compound concentrations may be attributed to an increase in the measured
groundwater level in monitoring well MW-1, which was approximately 10 feet higher in November 2019 than that measured in monitoring well MW-1 in January 2019. ECS recommends collecting an additional sample from monitoring well MW-1 in approximately six months (May 2020) to evaluate if the compound concentrations are continuing to increase. If the compound
concentrations decrease or remain stable, as the site meets the criteria for a Low risk classification, the site may be granted a status of No Further Action with a Notice of Residual Petroleum.
ECS also recommends that the current property owner be provided a copy of this report for their records.

*QC result is outside of established limits.
Wide recovery limits established for difficult compound.
Wide RPD limits established for difficult compound.
#Data exceeded client recommended or regulatory level
Percent recoveries and relative percent differences (RPDs) are determined by the software using values in the
calculation which have not been rounded.
No results have been blank subtracted unless specified in the case narrative section.
FLAG/QUALIFIER SUMMARY
Detected but below the Reporting Limit (lowest calibration standard); therefore, result is an estimated
concentration (CLP J-Flag).
J
Laboratory fortified blank/laboratory control sample recovery and duplicate recoveries outside of control limits.
Data validation is not affected since all results are "not detected" for associated samples in this batch and bias is
on the high side.
L-02
Laboratory fortified blank/laboratory control sample recovery and duplicate recovery are outside of control limits.
Reported value for this compound is likely to be biased on the low side.
L-04
Either laboratory fortified blank/laboratory control sample or duplicate recovery is outside of control limits, but
the other is within limits. RPD between the two LFB/LCS results is within method specified criteria.
L-07
Elevated reporting limit due to high concentration of target compounds.RL-11
