ECS has completed the Letter Report for the above referenced site. Included in this report is a description of the field activities, the results obtained, and our conclusions and recommendations. PROJECT UNDERSTANDING The subject site, Quaker Gap General Store, is located at 2172 Flat Shoals Road in King, Stokes County, North Carolina. The area around the site is a rural mixed residential and farm use area south of Quaker Gap, North Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). Except for the barns that are being used by the property owner, the remaining site buildings are currently vacant. Formerly, three 1,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) and one 250-gallon diesel UST were operated at the site. Based on information provided to ECS, all of the four USTs were removed from the site in August 1998. Samples collected after the USTs were removed indicated soils below the gasoline and kerosene USTs contained total petroleum hydrocarbons gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) concentrations greater than the State Action Level. A 4,000-gallon UST and an 8,000-gallon gasoline UST were installed at the site in November 1998. Details regarding the USTs are summarized in Table 1. Site photographs are attached to this letter. A Phase I Limited Site Assessment conducted by Geoscience and Technologies, P.A. (Geoscience), dated December 1998, determined that groundwater beneath the site and in water-supply wells located within 1,000 feet of the site were impacted by petroleum constituents. A Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) was conducted in 1999 by Geoscience. Four Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, and MW-6) and three Type III bedrock monitoring wells (MW-4D, MW-5D, and MW-7D) were installed as part of the CSA. Groundwater analytical results indicated compounds above the North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (NC2LGWQSs) in samples collected during the assessment. Four water-supply wells were located within 1,000 feet of the site, including one water-supply well (WSW-1) Letter Report Quaker Gap General Store King Stokes County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident: TF-19700 NCDEQ Contract: N17006 ECS Project 49:1553-C March 25, 2020 2 located on the site. The locations of the water supply wells are shown on Figure 3. Information regarding the water supply wells is summarized in Table 2. It was determined that public water was not available in the vicinity of the site. Two additional monitoring wells (MW-8 and MW-9) were installed as part of a Corrective Action Plan, prepared by Geoscience in October 2000. A groundwater monitoring event was conducted at the site by Terraquest Environmental Consultants, PC in December 2011. Analytical results from the sampling event indicated targeted compounds were above their respective NC2LGWQS in monitoring wells MW-2, MW-7D, and MW-9. According to the report, MW-1 could not be sampled due to the presence of approximately five feet of silt. Analytical results from groundwater samples collected from water-supply wells WSW-2 (Redding) and WSW-3 (Hall) did not identify petroleum constituents above detection levels. It was also calculated that the groundwater flowed to the west-southwest. A monitoring event was conducted in August 2012 by Crawford Environmental Services. Results indicated targeted compounds were above their respective NC2LGWQS in monitoring well MW-1, MW-2, and MW-9. Two water-supply wells (WSW-2 and WSW-3) were sampled within a 1,000 foot radius of the site. The on-site (WSW-1) water-supply well could not be sampled because it was inactive. Targeted compounds were not detected in the samples collected from the water-supply wells. A monitoring event was conducted by ECS in October 2014. Laboratory analysis of samples collected indicated that targeted compounds were detected in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-9 above their respective NC2LGWQS. The concentrations of targeted compounds generally decreased in each monitoring well sampled as compared to the 2012 sampling event. On March 14, 2016, ECS personnel collected groundwater samples from four monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, and MW-9) and two water supply wells (WSW-2 and WSW-3). Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-9 detected multiple targeted constituents above their respective NC2LGWQS. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from MW-3 detected MTBE greater than the laboratory detection limit, but below its NC2LGWQS. Targeted constituents were not detected in the groundwater samples from water supply wells WSW-2 and WSW-3 above their respective laboratory detection limits. On July 26, 2019, ECS personnel collected groundwater samples from three existing site monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, and MW-9). Review of the laboratory analytical report indicated benzene, naphthalene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and total xylenes in the sample collected from monitoring well MW-2 and 1,2-dichloroethane in the sample collected from monitoring well MW-9 were detected at concentrations greater than their respective NC2LGWQSs. Additional compounds were detected in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-9 at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits, but less than their respective NC2LGWQSs. An estimated concentration of bromomethane greater than the laboratory method detection limit, but less than its NC2lGWQS, was the only compound detected in the sample collected from monitoring well MW-1. No additional compounds were detected in the sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 greater than the laboratory method detection limit.
