Groundwater Monitoring Report Kuntry Korner Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: TF-14913 ECS Project 49:6390-A March 18, 2020 3 Based on the results of this sampling event, groundwater concentrations in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, and MW-8 have decreased since the previous sampling events conducted in August 2014 and May 2018. In addition, free product thickness measured in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-6, and MW-7 have decreased as compared to the previous gauging event conducted in May 2018. Groundwater Contamination Levels (GCLs) exceedances have previously been reported in samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-5. Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 have not been located since August 2014 and monitoring well MW-3 has contained measurable free product since May 2010. Compound concentrations in excess of the North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (NC2LGWQS) were detected in the sample collected from water supply well WSW-8 on July 31, 2019. Compound concentrations had not been detected in any sample collected from water supply well WSW-8 greater than the laboratory method reporting limits in any previous sample collected. ECS returned to the site on November 21, 2019 and collected an additional sample from water supply well WSW-8. The analytical results of the sample collected in November 2019 did not indicate any compounds at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. Results of the geophysical survey conducted by KCI indicated two potential previously unknown USTs located to the north of the site structure. Based on the conclusions above, ECS recommends installing free product adsorbent socks in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-6, and MW-7 in order to further reduce the free product thicknesses in these wells. The free product adsorbent socks would need to be removed and replaced on a bi- monthly basis. During the installation of the initial free product adsorbent socks, ECS recommends advancing soil borings via hand auger in the vicinity of the anomalies identified by KCI in order to confirm the possible presence of previously unknown USTs. Due to the presence of overgrown brush thickets, ECS recommends conducting clearing activities in order to potentially locate monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 which previously contained the highest compound concentrations at the site. In addition, ECS recommends collecting a sample from water supply well WSW-8 in approximately three to four months (February to March 2020) to confirm the recent sampling results. 2.0 PROJECT INFORMATION The subject site is Kuntry Korner located at 1075 Bald Hill Loop in Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina (Figure 1). Photographs of the site are included in Appendix A. Based on information provided to ECS, sampling conducted by NCDEQ personnel indicated the presence of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in an off-site water-supply well in 1995. The incident was accepted into the Federal Trust Fund in December of 1995. A geophysical survey conducted in 1996 identified five USTs. In March 1997, Geophex Ltd. (Geophex) removed two 1,000-gallon USTs, one 550-gallon UST, and two 560-gallon USTs from the site. UST closure samples collected by Geophex indicated Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) Gasoline Range Organics at concentrations as high as 133,000 milligrams per kilogram. No concentrations of TPH Diesel Range Organics were detected greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. Based on the results of UST closure samples collected, Geophex assumed the previous contents of the USTs were gasoline. The locations of the former USTs are shown on Figure 2. Groundwater Monitoring Report Kuntry Korner Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: TF-14913 ECS Project 49:6390-A March 18, 2020 4 In 1999, 12 soil borings were advanced on the subject site and four water-supply wells were sampled by Geophex. Laboratory analysis of the soil samples collected from the soil borings confirmed the presence of petroleum contamination extending behind the store and toward the rear (northeast) of the property. MTBE was also detected in water-supply wells WSW-2 and WSW-3 at concentrations greater than its NC2LGWQS, but less than its GCL. Information regarding the water supply wells is provided in Table 2. Five monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-5) were installed in March 2000. The location of the monitoring wells are shown on Figure 2. Samples were only collected from monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-5 in March 2000, as monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 contained measurable amounts of free product. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples indicated several petroleum constituents at concentrations greater than their respective NC2LGWQS, but less than their respective GCLs, in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-5. An aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) event was conducted in 2003. Approximately 149 gallons of free product was recovered during the eight-hour AFVR event. After the AFVR event, the monitoring wells were gauged for free product thickness. Only monitoring well MW-1 showed measurable free product. Measurable free product was observed in monitoring wells MW-1, MW- 2, and MW-3 in a second post-AFVR gauging event, performed in April 2003. In 2005, a mobile multi-phase extraction event (MMPE) was conducted. Approximately 55.95 total gallons of free product was recovered during the event. The monitoring wells were gauged immediately following the event. Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 reportedly exhibited a sheen and were subsequently gauged with no free product detected. Gauging of monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 in 2006 indicated free product at thicknesses of 0.34 feet, 0.56 feet, and 0.95 feet, respectively. Despite increased levels of free product from 2005, the overall level of free product had decreased since 2003. Analysis of groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-4 detected petroleum constituents above their respective GCLs. Monitoring well MW-5 could not be located. Several 96-hour MMPE events were conducted at the site in May, June, July, and September of 2011. Monitoring wells MW-6, MW-7, and MW-8 were installed during the MMPE event in September of 2011. Samples obtained from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, MW-5, and MW-8 indicated concentrations of compounds exceeding their respective NC2LGWQS and GCLs. Following the completion of the most recent 96-hour MMPE event (July 2012), free product was observed in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-6, and MW-7 at thicknesses of 0.13 feet, 0.21 feet, and 2.55 feet, respectively. Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, MW-5, and MW-6 were sampled after the completion of the MMPE event. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater collected from the monitoring wells detected targeted compounds above their respective NC2LGWQSs. Laboratory analysis of groundwater collected from monitoring well MW-1 detected benzene and MTBE above their respective GCLs. The report indicated that concentrations of dissolved phase contaminants have generally decreased in groundwater collected from monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-5 since the implementation of the MMPE events. The relative persistence of the Groundwater Monitoring Report Kuntry Korner Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: TF-14913 ECS Project 49:6390-A March 18, 2020 5 dissolved phase contaminants in groundwater samples collected from monitoring well MW-1 was attributed to its downgradient location relative to the source area. On August 15, 2014, ECS personnel collected samples from five monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, MW-5, and MW-8). Laboratory analysis of groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, MW-5, and MW-8 detected targeted compounds that exceed their respective NC2LGWQS with the concentrations of benzene in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 and the concentration of MTBE in monitoring well MW-8 exceeding their respective GCLs. Measurable free product was observed in monitoring wells MW-3 (0.44 feet), MW-6 (1.37 feet) and MW-7 (2.7 feet), and therefore, these monitoring wells were not sampled. Between August 15, 2014 and August 22, 2014, ECS collected samples from six water-supply wells (WSW-2 through WSW-5, WSW-7 and WSW-8) located in the vicinity of the site. Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from the area water-supply wells did not detect targeted compounds above laboratory quantitation limits. Water-supply well WSW-1 was not sampled due to the property being vacant and there was no power to the residence. ECS did not receive permission to sample water supply well WSW-6, therefore it was not sampled during site visits. ECS collected samples from monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-8 and water supply wells WSW-2 through WSW-5, WSW-7, and WSW-8 on May 1, 2018. Free product was measured in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-6, and MW-7 ranging from 0.08 feet (MW-3) to 3.57 feet (MW-7). Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-5 could not be located due to overgrown brush thickets. Review of the laboratory analytical results indicated compound concentrations greater than their respective NC2LGWQS, but less than their respective GCLs. No compounds were detected at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits in the water supply well samples collected. 3.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES 3.1 Geophysical Survey On July 31, 2019, ECS observed KCI Technologies, Inc. (KCI) perform a geophysical survey of the site in order to potentially identify any previously unknown USTs at the site. KCI personnel identified two anomalies located on the north side of the site structure. The signal on the ground penetrating radar display indicated potential USTs. KCI personnel also detected metallic objects in the vicinity of the anomalies with a metal detector which would seem to confirm the presence of two previously unknown USTs. A figure provided by KCI showing the locations of the anomalies is included in Appendix B. 3.2 Monitoring Well Sampling On July 31, 2019, ECS personnel gauged and sampled monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, and MW-8. Free product was measured in monitoring wells MW-3 (0.02 feet), MW-6 (0.05 feet), and MW-7 (0.09 feet); therefore, these monitoring wells were not sampled. Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 could not be located even with the use of a metal detector due to overgrown brush thickets. The locations of the wells are shown on Figure 2. Monitoring well construction details and water level elevation data are summarized in Table 2. Prior to sampling, the wells were purged using a new Groundwater Monitoring Report Kuntry Korner Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: TF-14913 ECS Project 49:6390-A March 18, 2020 6 disposable polyethylene bailer and new length of nylon cord. The wells were developed/purged by evacuating a minimum of three well volumes. After purging was completed, the groundwater samples were collected into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately four degrees Celsius (ºC). The sample containers were then submitted to Pace Analytical Services, LLC (Pace), a North Carolina certified laboratory located in Huntersville, North Carolina to be analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using Standard Method 6200B. A Chain of Custody Record (COC) was maintained and is included in the Appendix C. 3.3 Water-supply Well Sampling On July 31, 2019, ECS collected samples from water-supply wells WSW-2, WSW-3, WSW-4, WSW-7 and WSW-8. Water supply well WSW-1 was unable to be sampled as the property is vacant and there is no power supply to the property. Water supply wells WSW-5 and WSW-6 were unable to be sampled as permission was not obtained. The locations of the water-supply wells are shown on Figure 3. Water-supply well ownership can be found on Table 1. Prior to sampling, the water-supply wells and household plumbing were purged by allowing the water to run for approximately 20 minutes. After purging was completed, the sample was collected into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately 4 ºC. The sample containers were then submitted to Pace to be analyzed for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B. Based upon the laboratory analytical results of the sample collected from water supply well WSW- 8 on July 31, 2019, ECS returned to the site on November 21, 2019, to collect an additional sample from WSW-8. Prior to sampling, the water-supply well were purged by allowing the water to run for approximately 20 minutes. After purging was completed, the sample was collected into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately 4 ºC. The sample containers were then submitted to Pace to be analyzed for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B. 3.4 Groundwater Chemistry Prior to collecting the groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, and MW-8, geochemical parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity) were measured. The turbidity was observed during the sampling and recorded on the Groundwater Sampling Data Sheets (Appendix D). Based on the geochemical data, the average groundwater temperature was 16.52 °C and the average conductivity was 0.104 millisiemens per centimeter. The pH ranged between 4.42 and 7.05, and the dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 4.80 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 6.02 mg/l. The geochemical measurements are shown on Table 3. 4.0 RESULTS 4.1 Monitoring Well Sampling Results Review of the laboratory analytical results indicated benzene, MTBE, and naphthalene in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4, and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and 1,2-dibromoethane in the sample collected from monitoring well MW-4, were detected at Groundwater Monitoring Report Kuntry Korner Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: TF-14913 ECS Project 49:6390-A March 18, 2020 7 concentrations greater than their respective NC2LGWQS, but less than their respective GCLs. No compounds were detected in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-8 at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. The groundwater analytical results are summarized in Table 4 and graphically depicted on Figure 4. 4.2 Water-Supply Well Sampling Results Review of the laboratory analytical results indicated benzene, 1,2-DCA, and MTBE were detected in the sample collected from water supply well WSW-8 on July 31, 2019, at concentrations greater than their respective NC2LGWQS, but less than their respective GCLs. No compounds were detected in the samples collected from the remaining water supply wells at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. The results of the second sample collected from water supply well WSW-8 on November 21, 2019, did not indicate any compounds present at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limits. The water supply well sample analytical results are summarized on Table 5. 4.3 Groundwater Flow Direction Based on the groundwater elevation data collected on July 31, 2019, the groundwater flow direction is generally to the northeast beneath the site, as depicted on Figure 5. 5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the results of this sampling event, groundwater concentrations in the samples collected from monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, and MW-8 have decreased since the previous sampling events conducted in August 2014 and May 2018. In addition, free product thickness measured in monitoring wells MW-3, MW-6, and MW-7 have decreased as compared to the previous gauging event conducted in May 2018. GCLs exceedances have previously been reported in samples collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-5. Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 have not been located since August 2014 and monitoring well MW-3 has contained measurable free product since May 2010. Compound concentrations in excess of the NC2LGWQS were detected in the sample collected from water supply well WSW-8 on July 31, 2019. The free product adsorbent socks would need to be removed and replaced on a bi- Groundwater Monitoring Report Kuntry Korner Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No.: TF-14913 ECS Project 49:6390-A March 18, 2020 8 monthly basis. During the installation of the initial free product adsorbent socks, ECS recommends advancing soil borings via hand auger in the vicinity of the anomalies identified by KCI in order to confirm the possible presence of previously unknown USTs.
