This report includes a description of the work performed, the results obtained, and our conclusions and recommendations. PROJECT UNDERSTANDING The subject site is known as the Former Bradley Food Store and is located on US Highway 70 East, northwest of the intersection with Sherwood Forest Drive, in Nebo, McDowell County, North Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). The property is a vacant, former convenience store/gasoline station which was identified as a potential source of petroleum compounds identified in nearby water supply wells. FIELD ACTIVITIES Monitoring Well Sampling On January 8, 2020, ECS personnel mobilized to the site to gauge monitoring well MW-1using a decontaminated electronic water level meter. The locations of the monitoring well is shown on Figure 3. The depth to water in monitoring well MW-1 on January 8, 2020, was 53.51 feet below the top-of-casing. A summary of the current and historic groundwater depth measurements are included on Table 1. Following the gauging of the well, ECS personnel collected a groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-1. Prior to sampling, the well was purged using a new disposable polyethylene bailer and new length of nylon cord. The well was developed/purged by evacuating a minimum of three well volumes using the bailer and cord. The well was developed/purged to remove sand, silt and other fine sediments and to promote communication between the surrounding formation and the sand pack surrounding the well’s screened interval. After purging was completed, the sampler poured the groundwater sample from the bailer into laboratory 2 Bradley Food Store US Highway 70 East Nebo, McDowell County, North Carolina NCDEQ Incident No. 23994 ECS Project No. 49:1203-C January 27, 2020 prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately four degrees Celsius. The sample containers were then submitted to Pace Analytical Services, LLC (Pace) in Huntersville, North Carolina to be analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using Standard Method 6200B. A Chain of Custody Record was maintained and is attached. A copy of the sample collection field notes are also attached. Water Supply Well Sampling ECS also collected samples from water supply wells WSW-A, WSW-B, and WSW-C on January 8, 2020. The locations of the water supply wells are indicated on Figure 4. Information regarding the water supply wells is included in Table 2. The water supply wells and associated piping were purged for approximately 15 minutes each prior to sample collection. The samples were collected directly into laboratory prepared containers. Each container was labeled and placed in a cooler containing ice to maintain the samples at approximately four degrees Celsius. The sample containers were then submitted to Pace to be analyzed for VOCs using Standard Method 6200B. A Chain of Custody Record was maintained and is attached. A copy of the sample collection field notes are also attached. RESULTS Review of the laboratory analytical report did not indicate any compounds in any of the samples collected at concentrations greater than the laboratory method reporting limit. A summary of current and historical sample analytical results is presented in Table 3. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is attached. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Compound concentrations have not been indicated in samples collected from monitoring well MW-1 since June 2012. In addition, compound concentrations have not been indicated in water supply wells WSW-A, WSW-B, and WSW-C since July 2011, July 2015, and July 2011, respectively. As such, ECS recommends granting the site a status of No Further Action. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPAMethod 8260.N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported foreach analyte is a combined concentration. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute.
