RE: Closed Holbrooks Road Landfill Well Installment and Abandonment
Closed Holbrooks Road Landfill
Permit No. 60-02
Dear Ms. Drummond:
Smith Gardner, Inc., (S+G) is pleased to present this letter report regarding monitoring well
Installation and abandonment at the Closed Holbrooks Road Landfill. Monitoring well HRW-
9 had previously been damaged during site mowing and maintenance. The well was broken
and not able to be repaired from the surface, therefore it required replacement. This work
was performed in accordance with 15A NCAC 02C .0113.
Well Abandonment
S+G personnel, Geologic Explorations, and Mecklenburg County representatives mobilized at
the Closed Holbrooks Road facility on January 28, 2020. Well abandonment procedure
included attempting to remove a still in place bladder pump, removing the PVC stick up, and
filling the void with sodium bentonite chips. The bladder pump was unable to be removed due
to a break in the PVC riser. Grout was not able to be injected due to wet conditions not
allowing the truck mounted water tank to be moved to the well. In lieu of grout, Geologic
Explorations filled the void with sodium bentonite chips until level with ground surface,
sodium bentonite chips were then hydrated. Removed PVC was disposed of properly.
Well Installment
Well installation occurred the same day as the above -mentioned abandonment. HRW-9R was
installed adjacent to HRW-9's original location. HRW-9R was installed at a depth of
approximately 42 feet below ground surface (bgs) using a 4.25-inch hollow stem auger. The
well was constructed with 10-feet of 10-slot screen and sand in the annular space up to 2-
feet above the top of the screened interval. The remaining well depth was constructed with
solid PVC pipe. A 2-foot thick bentonite layer was emplaced above the sand pack and the
remaining annular space was filled with bentonite grout. The well was finished with an outer
steel casing set to approximately three feet above grade, a well cap, and lock. Construction
records and boring logs are presented in Attachment A.
