Revised 6/15/2016
David Lowe, Bowen transfer operator called 911 to report the fire after the scale operator noticed the transfer trailer smoking and Mr. Lowe was asked to check the trailer.
1.Transfer operator called 911. 2.Local fire department flooded transfer trailer with water and doused with foam to extinguish fire. 3.Drained excess water into leachate system.
4.Moved transfer trailer to safe location for monitoring for minimum of 3 days prior to transfer to ECE Landfill in Bertie.
5.Located water collection system under trailer to catch any residual run off resulting from extinguishing fire.
It was not necessary to empty the transfer trailer in order to extinguish the fire and therefore the cause is unknown.
A 53 foot waste transfer trailer, holding approximately 22 tons of waste was smoldering (not engulfed in flames) in the holding area of the transfer station.
Without knowing the cause of the fire, it is difficult to know how to properly prevent its occurrence. Continuing careful monitoring of waste prior to pushing it into transfer trailers and checking loads can help ensure that no flammable/combustible materials enter the transfer trailers. Educating customers about the dangers of
disposing of combustible/flammable materials via non-approved methods may also assist in preventing future issues.
Check all loads for flammable/combustible materials.
Notify the Section verbally within 24 hours and submit written notification within 15 days of the occurrence.
