ERM NC, Inc. 1 GW Sampling Report - Atando Ave. 2-2017.docx 1.0 FREE PRODUCT RECOVERY ACTIVITIES On December 27 and 28, 2016, ERM performed a surfactant injection and recovery event at the Site. The injection event took place on December 27 using existing monitor well MW-1. An oil - water interface probe was initially used to measure the free product thickness, which was 0.005 feet. Approximately 200 gallons of a 5% solution of surfactant (PetroSolvTM) were gravity fed into MW-1 over a 4-hour period. On December 28, a via vacuum truck was used to extract approximately 200 gallons of groundwater and emulsified petroleum from MW-1. A copy of the materials manifest is included in Appendix C. 2.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING ACTIVITIES 2.1 GROUNDWATER ELEVATION MEASUREMENTS Water level measurements were obtained in the site monitor wells prior to well purging and sampling on December 29, 2016 using a decontaminated electronic water level meter. Using top of casing elevations and the depth to water measurements, site groundwater elevations and hydraulic gradients in the saprolite aquifer were calculated. Monitor well construction information is presented in Table B-7. No free product was measured in monitor well MW-1; therefore, it was included in the sampling network. 2.2 GROUNDWATER SAMPLE COLLECTION The monitor wells were purged and sampled using low flow techniques with a peristaltic pump and new polyethylene tubing dedicated to each well. Flow rates during purging averaged 100 milliliters per minute. General groundwater quality parameters (pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity) were measured in the field during purging using a flow -through sampling cell. Sampling was performed once the parameters had stabilized. Low -flow samples were collected directly from the polyethylene tubing. Field sampling sheets are included in Appendix A. The samples were immediately placed on ice inside insulated shipping containers, and then delivered under the appropriate chain -of- custody protocol to Shealy Environmental Services, Inc. (Shealy) in West Columbia, South Columbia for analyses. The samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by EPA Method 8260B for the EPA 602 plus xylenes list, for semi -volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) by EPA Method 625, and volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPH) and extractable hydrocarbons (EPH) by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) Methods. A copy of the laboratory report is in Appendix B. ERM NC, Inc. 2 GW Sampling Report - Atando Ave. 2-2017.docx 3.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING RESULTS 3.1 GROUNDWATER ELEVATIONS AND FLOW The depth to groundwater in the saprolite zone varies across the monitoring area from 14.18 feet below ground surface (bgs) in monitor well MW-4 to 19.69 feet bgs in monitor well MW-2. Groundwater in the saprolite aquifer flows to the south toward an intermittent stream that is located approximately 250 feet west of the source area, on the west side of the railroad tracks. Groundwater flows under an average hydraulic gradient of 0.013 as shown in Figure 3. Groundwater elevation data are summarized in Table B-7. 3.2 GROUNDWATER RESULTS Laboratory analysis of groundwater samples detected target compounds in four of the six wells sampled at the site. The highest concentrations of VOCs and SVOCs were in MW-1 and MW-2, which is located downgradient from UST-1. The current and historical groundwater results are summarized in Table B-4. Figure 4 illustrates analytical results from the December 2016 event. The historical comparison of analytical results between samples collected from MW-1 in June 2016 and December 2016 indicate that semivolatile hydrocarbons were reduced by one or more orders of magnitude. This reduction appears to be the result of the surfactant injection/extraction event discusse in Section 1.0. Benzene, fluorene, naphthalene, and VPH/EPH exceeded 2L groundwater standards in several wells. However, gross contaminant levels were not exceeds in any site wells. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS In order to remove free product and reduce the contaminant mass in MW-1, approximately 200 gallons of a 5% solution of surfactant (PetroSolvTM) were gravity fed into MW-1 on December 27. A via vacuum truck was then used to extract approximately 200 gallons of groundwater and emulsified petroleum on the following day. Groundwater samples collected from MW-1 showed a notable decrease in SVOC concentrations from the June 2016 event. Benzene, fluorene, naphthalene, and VPH/EPH still exceeded 2L groundwater standards in several wells acros the site. However, gross contaminant levels were not exceeded in any site wells. Based on this single event, it appears that free product has been removed from the source area, and SVOC concentrations have been significantly reduced in monitor well MW-1. Continued free product gauging will be conducted to confirm the absence of product over time. However, based on the preliminary results, it appears that the site will be eligible for closure via Notice of Residual Petroleum. The sample receiving date is documented in the header information associated with each sample. All results listed in this report relate only to the samples that are contained within this report. Sample receipt, sample analysis, and data review have been performed in accordance with the most current approved NELAC standards, the Shealy Environmental Services, Inc. Any exceptions to the NELAC standards, the QAMP, SOPS or policies are qualified on the results page or discussed below. If you have any questions regarding this report please contact the Shealy Project Manager listed on the cover page GC/MS Semivolatiles Samples -001, -002 and -004 were diluted 20x, 5x and 5x, respectively, due to matrix interference. The reporting limits have been raised accordingly. Samples -001 and -003 had the surrogate recovered outside of the acceptance limits due to objective evidence of matrix interference. MA EPH Sample -001 was diluted 5x due to high concentrations of target compounds. As a result, the associated surrogates were recovered outside of the acceptance limits. No corrective action was required, as dilutions of 5x and greater may impact surrogate recoveries. MA VPH Samples -001 and -002 had the surrogate recovered outside of the acceptance limits due to objective evidence of matrix interference. Shealy Environmental Services, Inc.
