A release was discovered during the removal of a 550 gallon UST on 10/18/2018. The
contents of the tank were suspected to be diesel fuel at the time of the removal. As the
removal proceeded, a release was suspected and a sample collected that when analyzed via
EPA Methods 5030 and 3550 confirmed a release. A report of the release was made to the
NC DEQ via a UST Form 61 "24 hour" report. The cause of the release is suspected to be the
deterioration of the UST. The amount of the release is unknown.
Davis Property 20-Day / UST Removal Report
II. Site History and Characterization
Background Information
The subject property was the homestead of a large family farm. Apparently, a UST was
installed to store fuel for the farm vehicles. The tank was eventually abandoned and an
above ground tank was located near the UST location. There are no known past releases
associated with the site; however, a monitoring well was located proximate to the UST,
apparently part of a past investigation. According to the family representative, the well was
installed in the mid to late 2000's.

Site Characterization
At the time of the removal of the UST, the home and farm were vacant. A drinking water
well was noted on the property at a distance of less than 200 ft northeast of the release area.
The soil encountered appeared to be red to orange clay silt / silt. A monitoring well was also
found on the site. Groundwater was found at 13 ft below land surface (bls). The local area
and topography are illustrated in Figure 1, Aerial Photograph and Figure 2, the USGS map.
III. Initial Response and Abatement Activities
LIQUIDS REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL
Prior to any removal activities the contents of the UST were removed. A total of 375 gallons
of fuel and water mix (UST and AST) was pumped directly to a tanker truck and transported
via CERT, Inc. for disposal. A disposal manifest is attached.
UST REMOVAL
The UST removal was conducted on 10/18/18. Approximately two to three feet of
overburden was removed to expose the top of the UST and the tank was removed. Soil in
contact with the tank had a suspected gasoline contamination odor. Note that a short section
of product line was encountered. The line went to the north. It appeared that the former
dispenser was within a few feet of the UST and additional samples were not warranted.
EXCAVATION AND OVER EXCAVATION
At the time of the UST removal 27.5 tons of soil were removed for disposal. The narrow
excavation was continued vertically to a depth of about 17 feet. At this depth the soils were
saturated and the soil still contained a noticeable fuel odor. The proximate groundwater well
was checked and the water level discovered at 13 ft bls. It was decided to cease this phase of
Davis Property 20-Day / UST Removal Report 2
the excavation and sample the pit at a depth of 12 ft along a portion of the side wall that was
approximately under the former UST. The final excavation for this phase of the remediation
was approximately 8 ft wide and14 ft long at the surface narrowing to a bottom of an
estimated 4 ft wide and 8 feet long at a depth of 17 ft. The depth was decided by the abilities
of the equipment on hand.
FREE PRODUCT INVESTIGATION
There were no indications of Free Product present at this site during the described activities.
SOIL REMOVAL / DISPOSAL
Transport and disposal of the contaminated soil took place on 10/18/2018. A total of two
covered dump trucks transported 27.51 tons of soil to Environmental Soils, Inc. in Lattimore,
NC. A summary of these activities is shown in the following table. These Disposal
Manifests are included as Appendix C.

UST DISPOSAL
The UST was disposed of at the time of tank removal. Note that an aboveground tank
located just south of the UST location was also removed and transported for disposal.
The tanks were transported by CERT, Inc. to Auto Parts U Pull and Scrap Metal of Charlotte;
9820 Statesville Rd; Charlotte, NC 28269. A copy of the disposal manifest is included in
Appendix E.
IV. Source Investigation
SOIL SAMPLING
As part of the assessment activities at the time of tank removal, a confirmation soil sample
was collected from below the UST. The sample was analyzed utilizing EPA Methods 5030
and 3550 for total petroleum hydrocarbons.
After some of the contaminated soil was removed and the excavation was expanded to its
total dimensions, a single soil sample was collected. The sample labeled Post Excavation 12'
was taken from the side wall of the narrow excavation in the approximate shadow of the
UST. The soil sample was collected in laboratory provided containers / field preparations
and checked for the presence of constituents found by EPA Methods 8260, 8270, MADEP
VPH and EPH. The location of each sample is illustrated in Figure 3.
Davis Property 20-Day / UST Removal Report 3
Based on olfactory clues and PID results of 77ppm at the time of the soil sample, Post
Excavation 12' was believed to contain petroleum contamination.
SAMPLE RESULTS
Release Confirmation Sample
The sampling at the time of removal indicated contamination consistent with a diesel fuel
petroleum release with the readings being 2530 mg/kg TPH EPA Method 3550 (DRO) and
85.8 mg/kg TPH EPA Method 5030 (GRO).
Post -Excavation Risk -Based Sample
The sample Post Excavation 12' did not indicate contamination above the Method Detection
Limits. These results are contrary to the indications in the field, as discussed.
V. Conclusions and Recommendations
The primary source (UST) of the contamination and much of the secondary source (affected
soil) of contamination have been removed from the site. It is the authors understand that
additional excavation was conducted after the UST removal and over -excavation activities
described here.

ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit.
TNTC - Too Numerous To Count
J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit.
MDL -Adjusted Method Detection Limit.
PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit.
RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and
bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix.
S - Surrogate
1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is
a combined concentration.
Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate)
MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate)
DUP - Sample Duplicate
RPD - Relative Percent Difference
NC - Not Calculable.
SG - Silica Gel - Clean -Up
U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected.
Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether.
A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA
Method 8260.
N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for

Piping: means the piping and connectors running from the tank or submersible turbine pump to the dispenser or other end -use equipment (Vent, vapor recovery, or fill
lines are excluded.)
Dispenser: includes the dispenser and the equipment used to connect the dispenser to the piping (e.S., a release from a suction pump or from components located ahave
the shear valve)
Submersible Turbine Pump (STP) Area includes the submersible turbine pump head (typically located in the tank sump), the line leak detector, and the piping that
connects the submcruible turbine pump to the tank
Delivery Problem: identifies releases that occurred during product delivery to the nut),. Oypi el causes associated with this source arc spills and overalls )
Other serves as the option to use when the release source is known but does not lit into one of the preceding categories (e.g., for releases from vent lines, vapor
recovery lines, and fill lines)
Unknown: identifies releases for which the source has not been dctennined
Definitions of Causes
Spill: use this cause when a spill occurs (e.g., when die delivery hose is disconnected from the tank fill pipe or when the nozzle is removed front the dispenser)
Overfill: use when an overfill occurs (e.g., overfills may occur from the fill pipe at the tank or when the nozzle fails to shut offal the dispenser)
Physical or Mechanical Damage: use for all types of physical or mechanical damage, except corrosion (e.g., puncture of tank or piping, loose finings, broken
com)onents, and components that have changed distension)
Corrosion: use when a metal tank, piping, or other component has a release due to corrosion (e.g.. for steel, corrosion takes the form of rust)
Installution Problem: use when the problem is determined to have occurred specifically Because the LIST system was not installed properly
Other: use this option when the cause is known but does not fit into one of the preceding categories (e.g., putting regulated substances into monitoring wells)
