Re: 14-Day Notification of an Exceedance of 1,4-Dioxane in MW-2
Surry County Closed CDLF over Unlined MSWLF-Elkin
Event Date: November 26, 2018
Laboratory Report Date: December 11, 2018
Permit No. 86-03
Dear Ms. Drummond:
A sample collected from MW-2 during the latest semi-annual water quality monitoring event performed at the
Surry County Closed CDLF over unlined MSWLF-Elkin contained a concentration of 1,4-Dioxane (cas#123-
91-1) at (171 µq/L) which is above the 2L groundwater protection standard (3.0 µq/L). Since this is the first
time that 1,4-Dioxane has been detected above the 2L Standard a 14-Day notification form and a table
summarizing the detections in MW-2 is attached. The facility is already under assessment monitoring in
response to detections of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at MW-2, MW-3, MW-3A, MW-6 and
MW-8. The source of the VOCs is believed to have originated from a release from the unlined landfill with a
transport mechanism of either leachate and/or landfill gas. The full Semi -Annual Monitoring Report for this
Fall 2018 event is planned to be submitted soon and assessment monitoring will continue. If you have any
questions or concerns regarding this project please contact us by phone at (919) 772-5393 or by email at
jpfohl@mesco.com.
Sincerely,
