Division of Environmental Management 919 North Main Street Mooresville, N.C. 28115 Re: Assessment Activities Beatty's Indian River Fruit Company Hwy 601 and 24/27, Midland Cabarrus County, N.C. Dear Ms. Walker; Assessment activities were conducted at the above referenced site as required by the North Carolina Division of Environmental Management. Field activities and resulting information is provided below, as well as recommendations for fiuture assessment activities. Field Activities: Precision Environmental Inc. personnel sampled ground water from the monitor well (MW-1) located at the above referenced site on June 22, 1994. The around water sample was analyzed by Methods 601, 602 with IPE, and 3030C. Laboratory reports are attached. The analytical results indicate that IPE, Chloroform, and lead were not present above analytical detection levels. This contrasts with analytical results obtained from an earlier sampling event of this well which occurred on April 19, 1994, and from a ground water grab sample collected during UST closure activities on February 8, 1994. Table 1 below shows a summary of compounds detected during all sampling events. Field personnel also conducted a search for existing water supply wells within a 1,500 foot radius of the site. Eight wells were identified. Only one well could be determined to be currently in use and two wells currently not in use. Information about the other wells could not be obtained. The area is supplied by a County water system. Table 2 summarizes the information known about these wells. The well locations are shown in Figure 1 (attached). The results of the most recent sampling event suggests that might be the case. At least, all compounds detected in April and February were not detected in June. Recommendations: Based upon the results of the most recent sampling event, it is recommended that no further monitor wells be installed on site. Rather, the next step recommended in the assessment of this site is to sample MW-I on a quarterly basis to monitor the concentration of petroleum compounds. The proposed schedule for sampling MW-I is: September, December, March, and June. Because monitor well MW-I does not contain detectable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons, it is also recommended that nearby water supply wells not be sampled at this time. I hope this proposed plan of action is acceptable to the State of North Carolina. Thank you in advance for considering this proposal. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
