R. Rubin and Associates Sustainable Environmental Solutions 192 Fearrington Post Pittsboro, NC, 27312 Memo from: A. R. Rubin Subject: Foreign matter assessment of Carolina Recycled Ag Materials (CRAM) compost To: Kyle Bass 14 July 2018 The Division of Waste Management requires managers of permitted compost facilities to test product and determine levels nutrient, regulated metal and foreign matter. A composite Sample of the screened compost was received on 13 July 2018 through UPS delivery. The single sample was assessed as required in the CRAM compost system permit to determine the level of foreign matter (plastic, aluminum can fragments, metal fragments, glass, paper products, cigarette filter fragments, etc.). The sample was collected from the mature compost storage piles at the permitted facility. The sample was divided in quarters each containing approximately 100 grams of compost. Each quarter was assessed visually using a 10-power lens and no foreign matter was observed. Each of the four samples were then screened through 10-mesh screen followed by visual assessment of the fractions collected on the screen and of the compost fines collected beneath the screen. The solid materials collected on the screen showed no foreign matter. The solid materials passing the screen were examined visually using a lighted 50 power dissecting microscope. No observable inert materials were detected either atop the screen or in the bin collecting the fine compost screenings. The process of quartering allowed more reliable assessment of the finish compost. Based on these observations, the level of inert solids reported in the screened material is less than 0.5%. Continued assessment of the compost will be necessary to comply with the requirement to assess foreign matter levels as imposed through NCDWM in the compost system permit. If using this material in a container substrate mix, take this property into consideration. High EC can indicate good fertilizer value. High EC can also lead to root damage especially when the material is allowed to dry out. Insufficient information is available regarding the first year availability of nutrients in this material. The nutrient availability reported here is therefore the TOTAL nutrients in the material. Samples submitted prior to 2016 reported an estimated value rather than total nutrient levels. In reading the Laboratory Results section, remember that materials with < 15% dry matter (generally liquids) are analyzed as received; all other wastes are dried first. Values in the Estimate of Nutrients Available for First Crop section are based on the type of waste and method of application you specify and reflects the fact that only 40-60% of the nitrogen becomes available within one year of application. The remainder may or may not ever become available.
