Figure 1 illustrates the location of this facility on the Wilson Quadrangle U.S.G.S. Topo Map. This facility contains one permanent structure which is used as a gasoline convenience store. The site formerly contained (2) 6,000 gallon gasoline, (1) 4,000 gallon gasoline, & (1) 4,000 gallon diesel USTs. All of the gasoline USTs are still in use at this facility. The 4,000 gallon diesel UST, which was last used at this facility in November, 2015, was removed on December 17, 2015. Figure 2 illustrates the overall layout of this site and the UST locations. A release from the UST system was suspected on 12/17/15 based on elevated PID readings observed in soil samples collected from around the UST and the presence of a floating layer of diesel in the UST excavation. Groundwater was observed at a depth of approximately 4’ to 5’ below surface in the UST pit during soil abatement activities. The site and adjacent properties are used for commercial, residential and industrial purposes. Municipal water supplies are available to properties within 1,500’; however, adjacent properties are served by a local water supply well. The NCDEQ recently approved an ePATA to conduct the following tasks be conducted at this site prior to proceeding with development of a Corrective Action Plan for this facility: • Sample existing monitoring wells • Sample (1) nearby water supply well 1.2 Scope of Services This Groundwater monitoring report contains documentation concerning the following activities which have been conducted at this facility: o A monitoring well sampling event consisting of sampling 2 new and 8 existing wells at the site o Supply well sampling for (1) nearby private supply well o Laboratory analyses of groundwater samples conducted by Pace Analytical, Inc. of Charlotte, NC. o Estimation of the approximate groundwater flow direction and hydraulic gradient at the site. Page - 2 o Isoconcentration maps illustrating the current contaminant levels in the monitoring wells at the facility. 2.0 Field Activities 2.1 Monitoring Well Installation A total of (2) North Carolina Type II groundwater monitoring wells were installed off-site to complete horizontal delineation of the contaminant plume. Figure 2 illustrates the locations of the new monitor wells, denoted as MW-10 and MW-1 which were installed on property owned by Thomas Jones. The monitoring wells installed at the site were constructed of 2-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe with 7.5’ feet of casing and 10’ of 0.010 inch slotted screen. Based on the assumption that the contaminants being addressed were primarily hydrocarbon constituents with specific gravities of less than 1.0, the Type II monitoring wells were installed so that the screened interval intersected the shallow groundwater table at the time of installation. Well construction records for the new monitor wells constructed at this site are included in Appendix A. 2.2 Ground Water Flow Direction and Gradient In order to estimate the groundwater flow direction in the vicinity of the petroleum release, elevations of the monitor well casings were measured using surveying equipment. Static water levels were obtained from each of the wells and the data was used to compute a potentiometric surface map which is included as Figure 3. Groundwater data and monitoring well information, which are summarized in Table 1, were also used to estimate the hydraulic gradient at the project site. Using the horizontal distance between the monitor wells and the static water levels, the groundwater was estimated to be flowing in the east/northeast direction with a horizontal hydraulic gradient of approximately 0.015 ft/ft. 2.3 Monitor Well Sampling and Analyses On June 27, 2017, 10 monitoring wells were sampled for analyses utilizing Standard Method 6200B. Before sampling, the monitor wells were purged by removing a minimum of three well volumes to ensure that the samples were representative of the actual groundwater conditions. The monitor wells were developed using disposable plastic balers suspended with unused nylon string. Following development of the groundwater monitoring wells, samples were obtained from the disposable balers. All samples were placed in laboratory supplied glassware, labeled with sample location, analysis to be performed, time, date and sampler's name. The sample jars were then immediately placed in a cooler, chilled with ice to approximately 4oC in preparation of transportation to an analytical laboratory utilizing EPA approved chain-of-custody procedures. Page - 3 Laboratory analytical results indicate the presence of 9 compounds above the current listed 2L Standards in the monitor well network at this site. Total BTEX was detected at a maximum level of 88,670 ug/l in MW-9 installed down-gradient of the gasoline UST source area. Benzene was detected at a maximum concentration of 13,500 ug/l in MW-9, above its 2L standard of 1 ug/l and also above its GCL of 5,000 ug/l. Naphthalene was detected at a maximum concentration of 414 ug/l in MW-4, above its 2L standard of 6 ug/l. MTBE was detected at a maximum concentration of 7,810 ug/l in MW-9, above its 2L Standard of 20 ug/l. Table 2 summarizes the laboratory analytical results, and Appendix B contains a copy of the laboratory analytical report and chain of custody records. Figure 4 contains a benzene iso- concentration map, Figure 5 illustrates the estimated Naphthatlene concentration map, and Figure 6 illustrates the MTBE isoconcentration for the site. 2.4 Supply Well Sampling and Analyses On June 27, 2017, the Thomas Jones supply well at an adjacent property (SW-1) was sampled for analyses utilizing Standard Method 6200B. Before sampling, the supply wells were purged by pumping from the wells for approximately 10 minutes to ensure that the samples were representative of the actual groundwater conditions. After pumping, the flowrate was reduced for collection of samples. The sample from SW-1 was obtained from the bathroom sink at Ready Contractors. Laboratory analytical results indicate the presence of MTBE above 2L Standards in the supply well SW- 1 which serves Ready Contractors and a Private Residence. The MTBE level was noted in SW-1 at a concentration of 23.7 ug/l, above its 2L Standard of 20 ug/l. No other compounds were noted in this supply well. Table 2 summarizes the laboratory analytical results, and Appendix A contains a copy of the laboratory analytical report and chain of custody records. 2.5 Plume Development In prior sampling events conducted at the site, contaminants have been reported above 2L Standards in on-site monitoring wells and above GCLs for benzene. Benzene was observed at a maximum level at the site of 14,000 ug/l in the initial sampling event for MW-9 conducted in December, 2016, with a 0.01’ floating layer of gasoline noted in this well on December 15, 2016. In the latest monitoring event on June 27, 2017, benzene was observed at a level of 13,500 ug/l; however, free product was not observed. Benzene and MTBE levels have generally decreased in other monitoring wells over the brief history of the site except for MW-5 which is believed to be influenced by drawdown effects from SW-1. MW-5 showed an increase in Benzene during the June 27, 2017 sampling event, and SW-1 showed a significant increase in MTBE concentration during the June 27, 2017 sampling event to a level above 2L Standards. Sufficient data has not been collected to establish consistent trends for the site caused by seasonal fluctuations. Table 3 contains historical benzene concentrations at the site for source area monitoring wells. Page - 4 3.0 Conclusions and Recommendations 3.1 General Summary A groundwater monitoring sampling event has been conducted at the Friendly Mart facility located at 3055 Stantonsburg Road in Wilson, NC. From a review of all information gathered during this remediation project, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services makes the following conclusions: o 9 petroleum compounds were detected in on site monitoring wells above 2L Standards. Benzene was detected at a maximum concentration of 13,500 ug/l in MW-9, above its 2L standard of 1 ug/l and also above its GCL of 5,000 ug/l. MTBE was detected at a maximum concentration of 7,810 ug/l in MW-9, above its 2L Standard of 20 ug/l. o Free product was not observed at the site during the June 27, 2017 monitoring event. o The benzene level appears to have remained relatively constant in source area well MW-9 since the December, 2016 sampling event. Benzene and MTBE levels have generally decreased in other monitoring wells over the brief history of the site except for MW-5 which is believed to be influenced by drawdown effects from SW-1. MW-5 showed an increase in Benzene during the June 27, 2017 sampling event, and SW-1 showed a significant increase in MTBE concentration during the June 27, 2017 sampling event to a level above 2L Standards. o Due to the observed 2L violation in off-site supply well SW-1, Rose Oil Company, Inc. has a verbal agreement to connect all the SW-1 users to municipal water supply to reduce the risk of this site. Competitive bids are being obtained at the time of this report. 3.2 Recommendations Based on information obtained during this sampling event, Henry Nemargut Engineering Services makes the following recommendations for this site: o The SW-1 users should be connected to municipal water supplies once competitive bids are obtained. o MW-9 should be subjected to an AFVR event in November, 2017 to remove residual free product previously observed in this well with a semi-annual monitoring event conducted in December, 2017 to document benzene levels.
