Re: 14-Day Notification of an Exceedance of Benzene in MW-9S
Surry County Subtitle D Lined MSWLF
Event Date: December 12, 2017
Laboratory Report Date: January 9, 2018
Permit No. 86-06
Dear Ms. Drummond:
A sample collected from MW-9S during the latest semi-annual water quality monitoring event performed at
the Surry County Subtitle D Lined MSWLF contained a concentration of benzene (1.1 μg/L) above the 2L
groundwater protection standard (1.0 μg/L). Benzene was also detected in sample MW-9S below the 2L
Standard during previous events. Since this is the first time that benzene has been detected above the 2L
Standard a 14-Day notification form and a table summarizing the detections in MW-9S is attached. The lined
facility is already under assessment monitoring in response to detections of vinyl chloride at MW-9S in excess
of the 2L Standard. The preliminary release mechanism of the VOCs is believed to be a release from the lined
landfill with a transport mechanism of either leachate and/or landfill gas. The full Semi-Annual Monitoring
Report for this Fall 2017 event is planned to be submitted soon and assessment monitoring will continue. If
you have any questions or concerns regarding this project please contact us by phone at (919) 772-5393 or by
email at jpfohl@mesco.com.
