This letter report provides the signed Notification, a summary of the groundwater monitoring wells with tabulated laboratory analytical results and comparisons to the 15A NCAC 02L .0202 (NC 2L) or Groundwater Protection Standards, and a site map (Figure 1). The following list indicates the analytes detected above their respective NC 2L or Groundwater Protection Standards at each sampling location. Estimated or āJā flag detections are also provided and are identified with an ā*ā qualifier. A complete summary of all detected and estimated concentrations from March 2011 to September 2017 is provided in Table 1. Laboratory analytical data reports will be provided with the semi-annual sampling report. Historically, cobalt has also been detected in the background monitoring wells above the Groundwater Protection Standard. The chromium, cobalt, thallium, and vanadium concentrations in the compliance monitoring wells above the NC 2L or Groundwater Protection Standards are likely naturally occurring based on the historical detections and concentrations in the background and compliance monitoring wells at the site. These concentrations are being evaluated as part of an ongoing Alternate Source Demonstration (ASD). Filtered samples were collected from monitoring wells (MW-9, -23, -24, and -36) with an elevated turbidity (i.e. greater than 10 nephelometric turbidity units) during the September 2017 sampling event in order to demonstrate that select metals exceeding the NC 2L or Groundwater Protection Ms. Jaclynne Drummond October 23, 2017 Page 4 Standards are not related to a release from the landfill. Total metals that exceeded the NC 2L or Groundwater Protection Standards from these wells were analyzed for dissolved metals to determine if turbidity was a contributing factor to total reported metals. Dissolved metal sample results are provided in Table 1. The ASD will be submitted following evaluation of the current and historic data and site conditions. If you have any questions or require further explanation, do not hesitate to call me at (919) 325-3500. Very truly yours, Mathew F. Colone, P.G. All units are in micrograms per liter (parts per billion). 2. * - Groundwater Protection Standard 3. dup - Duplicate Sample 4. (4) - Monitoring wells MW-22, -30, -31, and TB-1a were not sampled during the September 2017 sampling event due to insufficient volumes of water in the wells. 5. J - Indicates the analytical result is an estimated concentration between the method detection limit and the Solid Waste Section Reporting Limit. 6. B - The analyte concentration detected in the method blank was greater than the method detection limit. 7. Monitoring wells MW-28, -28d, -33, -34, -34d, and -35 are sampled yearly during the spring event. 8. Dissolved metal samples were collected to evaluate the influence of turbidity on total metal concentrations as part of an ongoing Alternate Source Demonstration. 9. NA - Not Analyzed - Concentration exceeds the 15A NCAC 02L .0202 or Groundwater Protection Standard. - Indicates the result is below the detection limit. - Concentration exceeds the 15A NCAC 02L .0202 or Groundwater Protection Standard - Indicates the result is below the detection limits.
