(ATC) was retained by Circle K Stores, Inc. (formerly The Pantry) to perform pre-Corrective Action (Pre-CAP) activities at the former Pantry #3187 site located at 804 Durham Road in Roxboro, North Carolina. Presently, the site no longer operates as a c-store and retail fuel outlet. The former underground storage tank (UST) systems have been removed. The site location is shown on Figure 1, and the site details are shown on Figure 2. This report presents a summary of the laboratory analytical results for the groundwater sampling event conducted on May 3, 2017. 2.0 SITE BACKGROUND Historically, the site operated as a gasoline service station between 1976 and 2005. The UST systems at the site consists of one, 12,000-gallon gasoline UST, two 10,000-gallon gasoline USTs, one 12,000-gallon kerosene UST, and one 12,000-gallon diesel UST. UST system information is summarized in Table 1. On September 29, 2005 the USTs at the site were removed. The dispensers at the site were removed and the product lines were abandoned in-place by filling them with concrete. In December 2005, as part of the UST closure activities at the site, SEI Engineering and Geological Services, P.C. (SEI) advanced 15 soil borings around the perimeter of the UST pit, and 11 soil borings around the dispensers and product lines. The assessment indicated that impacted soil is present in the vicinity of the current UST pit. In February 2006, as part of a Phase II Limited Site Assessment (LSA), SEI conducted a receptor survey, supervised the installation of three Type II monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3), and collected soil and groundwater samples from the site. No water supply wells were located within 1,500 feet of the release source area. Laboratory analysis of soil samples collected in the release source area indicated benzene at concentrations above Soil-to-Groundwater Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCCs) in soil borings SB-1 and SB-8. The primary direction of groundwater flow across the site is towards the southeast. No free product was observed at the site at the time of the Phase II LSA. Laboratory analysis of groundwater samples collected in the release source area indicated hydrocarbon compounds above the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Groundwater Quality Standards (2L Pantry #3187 – Pre-CAP Monitoring Report May 15, 2017 NCDEQ Incident No. 26996 2 Standards) and Gross Contaminant Levels (GCLs). In June 2011, ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ACT) was retained by The Pantry to continue environmental assessment activities at the site. Upon review of historic reports, ATC recommended the completion of a Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) for the site. As part of the CSA, ATC performed soil sampling using a Geoprobe® during an event on May 1, 2012. Soil samples from borings SB-1 through SB-6 and SB-8 were field-screened and submitted for laboratory analysis. The results of the laboratory analyses reported benzene at concentrations above the NCDEQ Soil-to-Groundwater MSCC in soil borings SB-1 and SB-8. Target compounds were not detected above the Residential or Industrial/Commercial MSCCs. A groundwater sampling event was conducted at the site on May 14, 2012. The results of the laboratory analyses multiple compounds exceeding 2L Standards. Based on the calculated groundwater flow direction across the site, impacted groundwater is likely migrating to the southeast. Based on this sampling event, the groundwater plume is defined to the north and east and is defined vertically. The horizontal extent of the plume remains undefined to the south and west. Aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) was conducted at the site on July 24, 2012, in order to remove free product from MW-1. Approximately 260 gallons of contaminated groundwater was removed. Complete details are documented under the Free Product Recovery Report dated August 20, 2012. This report documents the results of a groundwater monitoring event conducted in May 2017. 3.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION 3.1 Groundwater Levels Groundwater levels were measured during the recent groundwater sampling event performed on May 3, 2017. An oil/water interface probe was used to gauge depth-to-water and free product thickness, if encountered, from the top of each well casing. Groundwater elevations ranged from 15.40 to 22.41 feet below ground surface (bgs) in monitoring wells MW-8 and MW-7, respectively. Pantry #3187 – Pre-CAP Monitoring Report May 15, 2017 NCDEQ Incident No. 26996 3 Monitoring well construction details are summarized in Table 2 and groundwater elevation data from the May 2017 sampling event is included in Table 3. Historical groundwater elevation data are summarized in Table 4. A groundwater elevation contour map is included as Figure 3. The contour map indicates that groundwater generally flows in a south-southeasterly direction, which is consistent with historical measurements. 3.2 Free Product No measurable free product was detected during the May 2017 monitoring event. 3.3 Groundwater Quality Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-8 on May 3, 2017. A disposable polyethylene bailer was used to purge a minimum of three well volumes from the monitoring wells and recovery wells prior to sample collection. Samples were placed in laboratory supplied sample containers and shipped on ice via overnight courier to Con-test Analytical Laboratory in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Groundwater samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 6200B. The results of the laboratory analyses indicated dissolved benzene in the groundwater sample from monitoring well MW-1 exceeded its Gross Contaminant Level (GCL). Other target compound concentrations were detected in monitoring well MW-1 and several of the other monitoring wells above established 2L Standards but below GCLs. Analytical results for the monitoring well samples collected in May 2017 are summarized in Table 5. Historical groundwater analytical data are summarized in Table 6. A dissolved benzene isoconcentration contour map is included as Figure 4. A copy of the laboratory analytical report and chain-of-custody documents are included in Appendix A. 4.0 SUMMARY During this reporting period, ATC completed a groundwater sampling event. Based on the results of ATC’s activities, the following conclusions are made: • Groundwater flow at the site is to the south-southeast. Pantry #3187 – Pre-CAP Monitoring Report May 15, 2017 NCDEQ Incident No. 26996 4 • No measurable free product was detected during the May 2017 groundwater sampling event. • Laboratory analytical results of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 detected dissolved benzene at a concentration exceeding its GCL. • Groundwater samples collected from other monitoring wells detected target compound concentrations above established 2L Standards but below GCLs. ATC recommends conducting a limited soil excavation in the area of monitoring well MW-1. After excavation activities, ATC recommends the re-installation of well MW-1 followed by a semi-annual groundwater sampling event of select monitoring wells. Following this sampling event, ATC recommends site closure with a deed restriction. 413/525-2332 FLAG/QUALIFIER SUMMARY *QC result is outside of established limits. Wide recovery limits established for difficult compound. Wide RPD limits established for difficult compound. #Data exceeded client recommended or regulatory level Percent recoveries and relative percent differences (RPDs) are determined by the software using values in the calculation which have not been rounded. No results have been blank subtracted unless specified in the case narrative section. Detected but below the Reporting Limit (lowest calibration standard); therefore, result is an estimated concentration (CLP J-Flag). J Laboratory fortified blank/laboratory control sample recovery and duplicate recovery are outside of control limits. Reported value for this compound is likely to be biased on the low side. L-04 Either laboratory fortified blank/laboratory control sample or duplicate recovery is outside of control limits, but the other is within limits. RPD between the two LFB/LCS results is within method specified criteria. L-07 Elevated reporting limit due to high concentration of target compounds.RL-11 [TOC_1]Flag/Qualifier Summary[TOC] Page 33 of 39 Table of Contents 39 Spruce Street * East Longmeadow, MA 01028 * FAX 413/525-6405 * TEL. 413/525-2332 CertificationsAnalyte CERTIFICATIONS Certified Analyses included in this Report SM21-22 6200B in Water NCAcetone NCBenzene NCBromobenzene NCBromochloromethane NCBromodichloromethane NCBromoform NCBromomethane NC2-Butanone (MEK) NCn-Butylbenzene NCsec-Butylbenzene NCtert-Butylbenzene NCCarbon Tetrachloride NCChlorobenzene NCEthanol NCChlorodibromomethane NCChloroethane NCChloroform NCChloromethane NC2-Chlorotoluene NC4-Chlorotoluene NC1,2-Dibromoethane (EDB) NC1,2-Dichlorobenzene NC1,3-Dichlorobenzene NC1,4-Dichlorobenzene NCDichlorodifluoromethane (Freon 12) NC1,1-Dichloroethane NC1,2-Dichloroethane NC1,1-Dichloroethylene NCcis-1,2-Dichloroethylene NCtrans-1,2-Dichloroethylene NC1,2-Dichloropropane NC1,3-Dichloropropane NC2,2-Dichloropropane NC1,1-Dichloropropene NCcis-1,3-Dichloropropene NCtrans-1,3-Dichloropropene NCDiisopropyl Ether (DIPE) NCEthylbenzene NC2-Hexanone (MBK) NCIsopropylbenzene (Cumene) NCp-Isopropyltoluene (p-Cymene) NCMethyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) NCMethylene Chloride NC4-Methyl-2-pentanone (MIBK) NCNaphthalene NCn-Propylbenzene NCStyrene [TOC_1]Certifications[TOC] Page 34 of 39 Table of Contents 39 Spruce Street * East Longmeadow, MA 01028 * FAX 413/525-6405 * TEL. 413/525-2332 CertificationsAnalyte CERTIFICATIONS Certified Analyses included in this Report SM21-22 6200B in Water NC1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane NCTetrachloroethylene NCToluene NC1,2,3-Trichlorobenzene NC1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene NC1,1,1-Trichloroethane NC1,1,2-Trichloroethane NCTrichloroethylene NCTrichlorofluoromethane (Freon 11) NC1,2,3-Trichloropropane NC1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene NC1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene NCVinyl Acetate NCVinyl Chloride NCm+p Xylene NCo-Xylene The CON-TEST Environmental Laboratory operates under the following certifications and accreditations: Code Description Number Expires 100033AIHA-LAP, LLC - ISO17025:2005AIHA 02/1/2018 M-MA100Massachusetts DEPMA 06/30/2017 PH-0567Connecticut Department of Publilc HealthCT 09/30/2017 10899 NELAPNew York State Department of HealthNY 04/1/2018 2516 NELAPNew Hampshire Environmental LabNH-S 02/5/2018 LAO00112Rhode Island Department of HealthRI 12/30/2017 652North Carolina Div. of Water QualityNC 12/31/2017 MA007 NELAPNew Jersey DEPNJ 06/30/2017 E871027 NELAPFlorida Department of HealthFL 06/30/2017 LL015036Vermont Department of Health Lead LaboratoryVT 07/30/2017 2011028State of MaineME 06/9/2017 460217Commonwealth of VirginiaVA 12/14/2017 2557 NELAPNew Hampshire Environmental LabNH-P 09/6/2017 Page 35 of 39 Table of Contents Page 36 of 39 Table of Contents Page 37 of 39 Table of Contents Page 38 of 39 Table of Contents Page 39 of 39 Table of Contents
