The first landfill employee arrived on-site at approximately at 7:00pm and began covering the smoldering waste with dirt using a D6N bulldozer. Six additional staff arrived shortly afterwards to help load, haul and cover the smoldering waste, supervise and document the event. The smoldering waste was completely smothered with at least 12 inches of dirt by 9:00pm. All landfill staff had left the landfill by 9:15pm. Unknown Approximately 2,400 sq. ft. (width and length of four ADC tarps (80'x300') of MSW was burned. Upon excavation of 5 pits with a trackhoe the following morning, charred waste was only found in the top 12 inches of waste. See attached photos. We will continue standard operating procedures as follows in watching for potentially combustible waste (hot loads). Hot loads identified prior to being dumped will be required to cool sufficiently on the vehicle before being dumped. Identified hot loads already dumped will be pushed off to the side and immediately smothered by dirt. Smothered hot loads will not be incorporated into the active working face until cooled sufficiently as to not ignite. No additional preventative measures have been identified other than current standard operations. The operators are highly trained to identify, remove/reject and smother hot loads and other waste that could ignite a fire. The waste that burned in this event was found to have been properly covered with ADC tarps the previous day and the side slopes were covered with at least 6 inches of dirt. All waste is covered with at least 6 inches of dirt weekly as per permit requirements. Upon excavation of 5 pits with a trackhoe the following morning, charred waste was only found in the top 12 inches of waste. Micah Eljiah Johnson Senior Civil Engineer 6/5/2018 The local fire department received phone calls of smoke by the public and neighboring Fulton YMCA. Upon investigation and confirmation of the fire at the Hanes Mill Road Landfill in Cell 5, the fire department contacted Adam Rickett, the designated landfill emergency contact, at approximately 6:45pm. LIST ACTIONS TAKEN: X I spoke with Micah Johnson on June 5, 2018 at 2:45 pm. No evidence of hot load or trespassers found. Lightening strikes during the evening of 6/3/18, but not probably cause of fire due to the low elevation of Cell 5. Four tarps lost in the blaze. No additional action required.
