Hi Elizabeth,
I work with Karen Weber here at Draper Aden Associates, and we do the gas probe monitoring at the Watauga County
landfill.
Yesterday, March 29th, we completed the first quarter gas monitoring event at the landfill. We found methane in probe
2 at levels above the 5% compliance level.
Attached is a table that presents the methane concentrations in probes 1 and 2 since 2011. During this event, the
concentrations in % by volume in probe 2were, from shallowest to deepest, 14.6, 20.7, 27.8, and 37.5.
Probe 2 has occasionally been above the limit in the past, the last time was in 2011. Typically, effective operation of the
active gas system has been able to keep the probe in compliance as you can see from the table. Draper Aden Associates
and the County consider that continuous operation of the active gas system will bring the probe back into compliance as
it has in the past. We do not consider this exceedance to be a threat to human health.
The County will continue to operate the active system and will initiate monthly monitoring of probe 2, which will
continue until the probe is in compliance for three consecutive months.
Regards,
Don
