Facility Overview:
The City of Thomasville WTP operates a conventional WTP designed for a potable
flowrate of 6.0 MGD. The facility generates backwash with a continuous discharge. The
maximum, monthly average discharge between May 2016 and April 2019 was
approximately 0.414 MGD.

Wastewater from the water treatment plant is discharged to the Alum Lagoon at Old Lexington
Road where settling of the alum sludge occurs. Prior to discharge to the lagoon chlorine is
removed from the waste stream with ascorbic acid. There is no further treatment of the waste at
the lagoon other than detention and settling of the waste. A screen is in place at the discharge
pipe to keep large debris such as leaves from getting into the flow meter.

Solids Handling Plan
Solids from the last time the lagoon was partially dredged are currently piled in a small
section within the confines of the pond so that rain water drainage off the mound goes back
into the pond. This mound of wastes is currently in the proposed budget for disposal at
either the Davidson County Landfill or the Winston Salem landfill for 2020 and is estimated
to cost about $250,000.
It is expected that we can get approximately 5 - 6 years more use of the lagoon before it
must be drained and partially dredged again. Disposal of the solids from that dredging will
be budgeted prior to the expected occurrence since costs have been determined. During the
draining and dredging process alum wastes from the WTP will be temporarily diverted to the
WWTP through the sewer system and solids generated from that will be disposed of with
WWTP solids. Once dredging is completed alum wastes will be sent back to the lagoon.
Preliminary planning is in the process for constructing a solids handling facility at the WTP.
It is as yet undetermined as to whether this might be a belt press or a centrifuge system. It
is possible that some other system might also be developed such as replacing our current
lagoon with a new dual channel lined lagoon that would allow one side to be used while one
was being drained and dredged. Until this solids handling facility can be designed, funded
and built the alum lagoon will continue to be operated in the use/dredge-WTTP
disposal/use cycle.
