Box 457 Yadkinville, N. C. 27055 • • 18 50 N SUBJECT: Lagoon at Bryant Hog Farm, Casstevens Road Dear Mr. Harrison, TELEPHONE: (336) 679-4203 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH (336) 679-4244 C 1 RECEIVED N.G. Dept. of EHN AUG - 6 2003 Winston-Salem Regional Office This correspondence is in response to your concerns regarding the Lagoon at the Bryant Hog Farm Operation on Casstevens Road. Said concerns were forwarded to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, Acting Regional Water Quality Supervisor, Mr. Steve Mauney and Division of Water Quality, Ground Water Section, Supervisor Ms. Sherri Knight. Mr. Mauney reports: • There is no indication, to date, that the lagoon is leaking animal waste. • It is difficult to predict how often a lagoon will reach the volume requiring spraying. • Diversion ditches upslope from the lagoon and well maintained vegetation keeps rain water out of the lagoon: • Per an April 24, 2003 operation review by the North Carolina Division of Soil and Water Conservation - the lagoon level has risen 28" in the past year. The review states that the facility is in compliance. • Well water samples were collected by Division of Water Quality, Ground Water staff from three onsite farm wells in April of 2001. The samples were checked for fecal coliform, nutrients and metals. No water quality concerns were found. Ground Water Section Comments: • A representative of the Ground Water Section stated there are currently no concerns to indicate the need for additional wells for ground water monitoring. • The Ground Water Section will again offer to sample the wells of property owners adjacent to the lagoon. This should begin later on this fall. Mr. Harrison, considering the above reports from the Division of Water Quality and the Division of Soil and Water Conservation the Bryant Hog Farm appears to be in compliance with state requirements. If you have additional concerns or questions please call me at (336) 679-4244 or Ms. Gayle Brown, Health Director, at (336) 679-4203. Sincerely, J.
